Widowhood, remarriage and migration during the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Uganda

    No full text
Recently the levels of widowhood have increased in countries of sub-Saharan Africa that are afflicted by the HIV/AIDS epidemic. This paper reviews the cultures of several societies in Uganda in relation to the treatment of widows. Using a data set based on a sample of 1797 households covering east, south and western Uganda, the study finds higher proportions of widows than widowers. Over half of widowers compared to one quarter of widows remarry. Reasons for remarriages of widowers and widows are discussed. While younger widows migrated from their late spouses’ homes more than the older ones, the pattern of the widowers shows that those in ages 20-34 migrated most. Deeper analysis indicates that widowed people who moved away from their deceased spouses’ homes did so for reasons other than the death of their spouses. The widowers were more likely to move than the widows and the unhealthy ones migrated more than the healthy ones

Fertilizer trade and pricing in Uganda

    Get PDF
Liberalized fertilizer markets in eastern Africa typically deliver fertilizer to smallholder farming regions at prices that render its use unprofitable. Simultaneously, faced with little demand for fertilizer in these regions, fertilizer traders appear unwilling to invest in measures that might reduce farm-gate prices. A basic question throughout the region is therefore how to cost-effectively increase smallholders' access to fertilizer, under conditions of liberalized and privatised trade in the input. This paper explores that question for Uganda using data from a wide-ranging study of Uganda's fertilizer sub-sector. The prevailing system of fertilizer procurement and distribution is found to imply a market structure dominated by retail-level trade, high prices, and low net margins. The study concludes that there is no inherent pressures in the extant system of fertilizer procurement and distribution toward development of a wholesaling backbone that might allow capture of scale economies. But with imaginative and sustained investments in institutional innovation and strengthening, there is scope to reduce prices and increase net trading margins.Agribusiness,

Determinants of Land Use in the Densely Populated Kigezi Highlands of Southwestern Uganda

We use a multinominal logit model to examine the determinants of plot abandonment (unintentional fallows) and long fallows (intentional fallows) in order to propose policy interventions that lead to optimal and sustainable management of land use systems in Kigezi highlands. Household factors such as age, and post primary education positively influenced farmers' decision to abandon plots. Therefore, more fallows and abandoned terraces were common with older farmers compared to younger ones. However, farm size and household type had no significant influence on abandonment of plots. Plot variables such as slope and plot distance had the expected positive signs while soil fertility had a significant negative sign as predicted. Two types of interventions are recommended. Those aimed at highly cultivable, moderate slopes and those aimed at uncultivable and fragile areas. For the former, the probability of adoption and intensity of use of appropriate agrobased interventions is likely to be very high. The latter require specific interventions that are profitable and yet allowing farmers to keep the land under cover for a very long time. Furthermore, we recommend incentives aimed at minimizing distances to plot fields.abandoned terraces, Land use, Kigezi Highlands, multinominal logit, Land Economics/Use,

Tra amor sacro e amor profano: "Kabale und Liebe"

In "Freigeisterei der Leidenschaft", Schiller claims that the conventions established by society and family suffocate the rights of passion. Freigeisterei is a libertarian philosophy born in France in the 17th Century, and Schiller’s writing supports the right to refuse the duty of obedience in favour of a greater autonomy of thought and of auto-determination. Similar claims are made also in "Die Kindsmörderin", but in more moderate terms, since the work deals with the consequences of an infanticide. The seduced and abandoned mother, who chooses to kill her own offspring, reflects on how sentiments often lead towards the wrong path. "Kabale und Liebe" is the summa of young Schiller’s philosophical, psychological and dramatic knowledge. In it, the linguistic experimentation and the variety of linguistic registers, particularly with regards to the theme of love, are of fundamental value. The article examines the relationship between love and power in the play, its language, as well as the figure of the woman and some aspects concerning the female gender, focusing on the character of Luise who is the emblem of an ideal of Neoplatonic love Schiller discusses in his younger years in his "Philosophische Briefe"

    M. Iu. Lermontov and the science of passions

In the works of M.Iu. Lermontov, the frequent use of the word “passion” (“strast’”) catches the attention of any reader. The word is present in his prosaic and poetic works. This thesis makes the first steps to investigate the “science of passions” in Lermontov’s oeuvre. The ages of Enlightenment and Romanticism had produced certain “theories of passions”, proposed by David Hume, Immanuel Kant, Madame de Staël and Charles Fourier. If the novel “Geroi nashego vremeni” is read with the key of this philosophy, a hidden logic of passion becomes visible, which enables us to understand Pechorin’s character. Mastering the art of passions distinguishes Pechorin from all other characters of Lermontov’s oeuvre. In his plays, Lermontov continues Schiller’s “tragedy of passions” in order to transform the passions into an “object of investigation”. Lermontov’s conception of passions can also be traced on a lexical level, in the attributes and topoi that are connected to the word “strast’”. The connection to the semantic fields of “fire” and “water” are striking. This analysis allows us to read poems and nature description that do not explicitly refer to passion as images for the “science of passions”
