7th International Congress of Infectious-Diseases-and-Clinical-Microbiology-Speciality-Society-of-Turkey -- MAY 08-13, 2018 -- Antalya, TURKEYIntroduction: In this study, we aimed to determine the risk factors associated with inadequate empirical antibiotherapy (IEAT) and hospital-related mortality in elderly patients being treated for upper urinary tract infections (UTI). Materials and Methods: This study included individuals aged 65 years and over who were hospitalized after being diagnosed of community-acquired UTI or community-onset healthcare-associated UTI and followed-up in clinics and/or intensive care units (ICU) of 33 hospitals between March and September 2017. Results: A total of 525 patients (48% males; mean age: 76.46 +/- 7.93 years) were included in the study. Overall, 68.2% of the patients were hospitalized through the emergency department and 73.9% of patients were followed-up for pyelonephritis. Gram-negative, Gram-positive, and Gram-negative and positive mix growths were determined in 88%, 9.3%, and 2.7% of urine cultures, respectively. Fifty-six (10.7%) of the patients died. In multivariate analysis, the presence of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease [Odds ratio (OR): 2.278], age 85 years and over (OR: 2.816), admission to the ICU (OR: 14.831), and IEAT (OR: 2.364) were independent factors that significantly affected mortality. The presence of a urinary catheter, being followed-up in the ICU, benign prostate hypertrophy, use of antibiotics other than piperacillin-tazobactam and carbapenem were determined as independent factors that significantly affected IEAT (p<0.05). Conclusion: In our study, we found a direct correlation between IEAT and mortality. Therefore, knowing the most frequent microorganisms and antibiotic susceptibility profiles observed in the UTI of elderly patients may help to decrease the mortality and morbidity associated with these infections.Infect Dis & Clin Microbil Special Soc Turkiy

Comparison of fecal coliform bacteria before and after wastewater treatment plant in the Izmir Bay (Eastern Aegean Sea)

The distribution of fecal coliforms was investigated and determined in Izmir Bay from 1996 to 2005. Izmir Bay severely was polluted from industrial and domestic discharges during decades. In early 2000, a wastewater treatment plant began to treat domestic and industrial wastes. This plant treats the wastes about 80% capacity after 2001. The sampling periods cover before and after treatment plant. Assessment method for determining the number of fecal coliform has evolved membrane filtrations. Maximum surface fecal coliform concentration was 4.9 x 10(5) cfu 100 ml (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) in 1996-2000 period. Following the opening treatment system, fecal coliform density decreased 2.1 x 10(4) cfu 100 ml (-aEuro parts per thousand 1) during 2001-2005. A continuous improvement can be sustained in the water quality if direct inflow of untreated wastewater is prevented

An investigation of the citation transformation types in M.A. and PhD theses

    No full text
Abstract This study investigates the types of citation transformation preferred by both English L1 (native language) writers and Turkish writers who use English as a foreign language (L2). The corpus consists of 34 theses, 17 of which are Turkish writers’ theses in English language including 10 M.A. and 7 PhD theses and 17 English L1 writers’ theses comprised of 10 M.A. and 7 PhD theses. Based on the relevant literature, a rubric was prepared by the researchers in order to analyse the theses by means of qualitative content analysis. The findings revealed that three forms of content integration consisting of direct quotation, patchwriting and critical evaluation were markedly different in English L1 and Turkish writers’ theses. Turkish L1 writers’ overuse of direct quotation and patchwriting attracted attention compared to English L1 writers
