    In-lecture learning motivation predicts students’ motivation, intention, and behaviour for after-lecture learning: Examining the trans-contextual model across universities from UK, China, and Pakistan

    This paper presents a cross-cultural examination of the trans-contextual model in University education setting. The purpose of the study was to test the effect of students’ perceived autonomy support and in-lecture learning motivation on motivation, intention, and behaviour with respect to after-lecture learning via the mediation of the social cognitive variables: attitude, subjective norm, and perceived behavioural control. University students from UK, China, and Pakistan completed the questionnaires of the study variables. Results revealed that in-lecture perceived autonomy support and autonomous motivation were positively associated with autonomous motivation and intention to engage in after-lecture learning activities via the mediation of the social cognitive variables in all samples. After controlling for the effect of past behaviour, relations between intention and behaviour were only observed in the Chinese sample. In conclusion, the trans-contextual model can be applied to University education, but cultural differences appear to moderate the predictive power of the model, particularly for the intention-behaviour relationship

    The insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in the Angiotensin-converting enzyme gene and cancer risk: a meta-analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism in the <it>Angiotensin-converting enzyme </it>(<it>ACE</it>) gene has been implicated in susceptibility to cancer, but a large number of studies have reported inconclusive results. The aim of this study is to assess the association between the I/D polymorphism in the <it>ACE </it>gene and cancer risk by meta-analysis.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>A search was performed in Pubmed database, Embase database, Chinese Biomedical (CBM) database, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) database and Weipu database, covering all studies until August 31, 2010. Statistical analysis was performed by using Revman4.2 and STATA 10.0.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A total of 25 case-control studies comprising 3914 cancer patients and 11391 controls were identified. No significant association was found between the I/D polymorphism and over all cancer risks (OR = 0.88, 95%CI = 0.73-1.06, P = 0.17 for DD+DI vs. II). In the subgroup analysis by ethnicity, no significant association was found among Asians and Europeans for the comparison of DD+DI vs. II. In the subgroup analysis by cancer types, no significant associations were found among lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, gastric cancer for the comparison of DD+DI vs. II. Results from other comparative genetic models also indicated the lack of associations between this polymorphism and cancer risks.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This meta-analysis suggested that the <it>ACE </it>D/I polymorphism might not contribute to the risk of cancer.</p

    Search for Lepton-number-violating B+->D-l+l'+ Decays

    We perform the first search for lepton-number-violating B+->D-l+l'+ decays, where l and l' stand for e or mu, using 772 x 10^6 BB-bar pairs accumulated at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB e^+e^- collider. No evidence for these decays has been found. Assuming uniform three-body phase space distributions for the D-l+l+ decays, we set the following upper limits on the branching fractions at 90% confidence level: Br(B+ -> D-e+e+) < 2.6x10^-6, Br(B+ -> D-e+mu+) D-mu+mu+) < 1.0x10^-6.Comment: 7 pages, 2 figure

    A genetic cause of Alzheimer disease: mechanistic insights from Down syndrome

    Down syndrome, caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, is associated with a greatly increased risk of early onset Alzheimer disease. It is thought that this risk is conferred by the presence of three copies of the gene encoding amyloid precursor protein (APP), an Alzheimer risk factor, although the possession of extra copies of other chromosome 21 genes may also play a role. Further study of the mechanisms underlying the development of Alzheimer disease in Down syndrome could provide insights into the mechanisms that cause dementia in the general population

    International Consensus Statement on Rhinology and Allergy: Rhinosinusitis

    Background: The 5 years since the publication of the first International Consensus Statement on Allergy and Rhinology: Rhinosinusitis (ICAR‐RS) has witnessed foundational progress in our understanding and treatment of rhinologic disease. These advances are reflected within the more than 40 new topics covered within the ICAR‐RS‐2021 as well as updates to the original 140 topics. This executive summary consolidates the evidence‐based findings of the document. Methods: ICAR‐RS presents over 180 topics in the forms of evidence‐based reviews with recommendations (EBRRs), evidence‐based reviews, and literature reviews. The highest grade structured recommendations of the EBRR sections are summarized in this executive summary. Results: ICAR‐RS‐2021 covers 22 topics regarding the medical management of RS, which are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Additionally, 4 topics regarding the surgical management of RS are grade A/B and are presented in the executive summary. Finally, a comprehensive evidence‐based management algorithm is provided. Conclusion: This ICAR‐RS‐2021 executive summary provides a compilation of the evidence‐based recommendations for medical and surgical treatment of the most common forms of RS

    The flavonoid myricetin reduces nocturnal melatonin levels in the blood through the inhibition of serotonin N-acetyltransferase

    Melatonin is secreted during the hours of darkness and is thought to influence the circadian and seasonal timing of a variety of physiological processes. AANAT, which is expressed in the pineal gland, retina, and various other tissues, catalyzes the conversion of serotonin to N-acetylserotonin and is the rate-limiting enzyme in the biosynthetic pathway of melatonin. The compounds that modulate the activity of AANAT can be used to treat patients with circadian rhythm disorders that are associated with specific circadian rhythm alterations, such as shift work disorder. In the present study, we screened modulators of AANAT activity from the water extracts of medicinal plants. Among the 267 tested medicinal plant extracts, Myricae Cortex (Myrica rubra), Perillae Herba (Perilla sikokiana), and Eriobotryae Folium (Eriobotrya japonica) showed potent inhibition of AANAT activity. Myricetin (5,7,3&apos;,4&apos;,5&apos;-pentahydroxyflavonol), a main component of the Myricae Cortex, strongly inhibited the activity of AANAT and probably block the access to the substrate by docking to the catalytic residues that are important for AANAT activity. Myricetin significantly decreased the nocturnal serum melatonin levels in rats. In addition, the locomotor activity of rats treated with myricetin decreased during the nighttime and slightly increased throughout the day. These results suggest that myricetin could be used as a therapy to increase nighttime alertness by changing the circadian rhythm of serum melatonin and locomotor activity. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc.     MicroRNA-185 oscillation controls circadian amplitude of mouse Cryptochrome 1 via translational regulation

    Mammalian circadian rhythm is observed not only at the suprachiasmatic nucleus, a master pacemaker, but also throughout the peripheral tissues. Investigation of the regulation of clock gene expression has mainly focused on transcriptional and posttranslational modifications, and little is known about the posttranscriptional regulation of these genes. In the present study, we investigate the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in the posttranscriptional regulation of the 3&apos;-untranslated region (UTR) of the mouse Cryptochrome 1 (mCry1) gene. Knockdown of Drosha, Dicer, or Argonaute2 increased mCry1-3&apos;UTR reporter activity. The presence of the miRNA recognition element of mCry1 that is important for miR-185 binding decreased mCRY1 protein, but not mRNA, level. Cytoplasmic miR-185 levels were nearly antiphase to mCRY1 protein levels. Furthermore, miR-185 knockdown elevated the amplitude of mCRY1 protein oscillation. Our results suggest that miR-185 plays a role in the fine-tuned regulation of mCRY1 protein expression by controlling the rhythmicity of mCry1 mRNA translation.112018sciescopu
