This article describes the methodological approach that was used in the design of a curriculum for children in Grades 1-3 in the Reformed Churches in South Africa. The curriculum structure must guide the children to form an impression of and come to a realisation about the greatness of the Word of God. Catechism is a resolute instruction with a very specific learning outcome. In a society with postmodern thinking a catechism demands a lot from religious instructors. Various fundamental principles are no longer considered as self-evident. The contemporary endeavour to reach children in a purposeful manner has been an enterprise of the church throughout its history. Evaluation of waist-to-height ratio to predict 5 year cardiometabolic risk in sub-Saharan African adults
Simple, low-cost central obesity measures may help identify individuals with increased cardiometabolic disease risk, although it is unclear which measures perform best in African adults. Factors affecting pregnancy outcome in a gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) programme
Objective. To identify the factors that most significantly affected pregnancy rates in a gamete intrafallopian transfer (GIFT) programme.Methods. A total of 863 GIFT cycles were analysed retrospectively. The variables found to be associated significantly with pregnancy were then used to obtain multivariate analysis using logistical regression.Results. Overall and ongoing pregnancy rates were significantly better in patients ≤ 38 years than in patients > 38 years (37.3% and 28.4% v. 23.7% and 11.0% respectively), and age was positively associated with success after GIFT (odds ratio (OR) 1.87, 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.22- 2.85). Metaphase I (MI) oocytes were negatively associated with pregnancy (OR 1.54, 95% CI: 0.28 - 1.04). The highest pregnancy rates occurred when 3 metaphase II (MII) oocytes were transferred (39.8%, OR 7.51, 95% CI: 1.74 - 32.42). With regard to sperm morphology, overall pregnancy rates of 25.5% (≤ 4% normal forms) and 37.2% (> 4% normal forms) were obtained. Morphology of > 4% normal forms was positively associated with pregnancy (OR 1.58, 95% CI: 1.04 - 2.42).Conclusion. The results of this study suggest that the most important factors influencing pregnancy rates in a GIFT programme are the woman's age and those factors pertaining to the characteristics of the gametes. Considering the emotional and financial costs it is important to relate this information to all prospective participants in a GIFT programme
The influence of secularisation on the DR Church : a church historical and sociological perspective
The influence of religious discourses and institutions in South Africa,
as elsewhere, diminishes because of structural secularisation. Social
secularisation as another form of secularisation compromises the
'necessity’ for religion in modern day social culture. Humanistic Western
Individualism is the dominant social meaning system (also in South Africa)
best associated with this process. Th e actualisation of its priorities (personal
freedom, privacy, emancipation of the self, freedom of choice and to strive
for personal affluence) plays a significant role in the lives of the Dutch
Reformed Church’s congregants. Social secularisation liberates people from
ecclesiastical doctrine as regulatory for personal life and reason and marks
the growing indifference to the official church. Th is leads to a legitimacy
crisis concerning established religious meaning systems. Ironically religion
doesn’t disappear altogether because of secularisation. It does however,
transposes traditional forms of collective religion because the sustainment
of religion as phenomenon depends increasingly on religiosities in the
private sphere. Consequently, the proliferation of different personal,
religious beliefs and practices also increases religious pluralism within the

Christian hermeneutics in South Africa
Hermeneutics remains a divisive and polarizing topic within scholarly and ecclesiastical communities in South Africa. These tensions are not limited to theoretical differences but often crystallize on a grassroots level when local churches and church assemblies have to make important decisions on controversial ethical topics such as ordaining women in church offices, assessing the ethics of gay marriages, and taking a stance on the land debate in South Africa. This book makes a unique contribution in two ways: firstly, it focuses on the uniquely South African hermeneutical landscape; secondly, it relates theories to practical ethical application. The unique scholarly contribution of this consists in it relating hermeneutics to ethics within the South African landscape. A diverse group of scholars have been invited to partake in the project and the views expressed are often quite diverse. This allows readers to develop an understanding and sensitivity of the various angles employed and the interests at stake in addressing difficult societal problems
Model Independent Analysis of the Forward-Backward Asymmetry for the Decay
The sensitivity of the zero position of the forward backward asymmetry
for the exclusive
decay is examined by using most general non-standard 4-fermion interactions.
Our analysis shows that the zero position of the forward backward asymmetry is
very sensitive to the sign and size of the Wilson coefficients corresponding to
the new vector type interactions, which are the counter partners of the usual
Standard Model operators but have opposite chirality. In addition to these, the
other significant effect comes from the interference of Scalar-Pseudoscalar and
Tensor type operators. These results will not only enhance our theoretical
understanding about the axial vector mesons but will also serve as a good tool

Thermodynamics of Black Holes in Two (and Higher) Dimensions
A comprehensive treatment of black hole thermodynamics in two-dimensional
dilaton gravity is presented. We derive an improved action for these theories
and construct the Euclidean path integral. An essentially unique boundary
counterterm renders the improved action finite on-shell, and its variational
properties guarantee that the path integral has a well-defined semi-classical
limit. We give a detailed discussion of the canonical ensemble described by the
Euclidean partition function, and examine various issues related to stability.
Numerous examples are provided, including black hole backgrounds that appear in
two dimensional solutions of string theory. We show that the Exact String Black
Hole is one of the rare cases that admits a consistent thermodynamics without
the need for an external thermal reservoir. Our approach can also be applied to
certain higher-dimensional black holes, such as Schwarzschild-AdS,

Constraint methods for determining pathways and free energy of activated processes
Activated processes from chemical reactions up to conformational transitions
of large biomolecules are hampered by barriers which are overcome only by the
input of some free energy of activation. Hence, the characteristic and
rate-determining barrier regions are not sufficiently sampled by usual
simulation techniques. Constraints on a reaction coordinate r have turned out
to be a suitable means to explore difficult pathways without changing potential
function, energy or temperature. For a dense sequence of values of r, the
corresponding sequence of simulations provides a pathway for the process. As
only one coordinate among thousands is fixed during each simulation, the
pathway essentially reflects the system's internal dynamics. From mean forces
the free energy profile can be calculated to obtain reaction rates and insight
in the reaction mechanism. In the last decade, theoretical tools and computing
capacity have been developed to a degree where simulations give impressive
qualitative insight in the processes at quantitative agreement with
experiments. Here, we give an introduction to reaction pathways and
coordinates, and develop the theory of free energy as the potential of mean
force. We clarify the connection between mean force and constraint force which
is the central quantity evaluated, and discuss the mass metric tensor
correction. Well-behaved coordinates without tensor correction are considered.
We discuss the theoretical background and practical implementation on the
example of the reaction coordinate of targeted molecular dynamics simulation.
Finally, we compare applications of constraint methods and other techniques
developed for the same purpose, and discuss the limits of the approach
Rare Decays of \Lambda_b->\Lambda + \gamma and \Lambda_b ->\Lambda + l^{+} l^{-} in the Light-cone Sum Rules
Within the Standard Model, we investigate the weak decays of and with the light-cone
sum rules approach. The higher twist distribution amplitudes of
baryon to the leading conformal spin are included in the sum rules for
transition form factors. Our results indicate that the higher twist
distribution amplitudes almost have no influences on the transition form
factors retaining the heavy quark spin symmetry, while such corrections can
result in significant impacts on the form factors breaking the heavy quark spin
symmetry. Two phenomenological models (COZ and FZOZ) for the wave function of
baryon are also employed in the sum rules for a comparison, which can
give rise to the form factors approximately 5 times larger than that in terms
of conformal expansion. Utilizing the form factors calculated in LCSR, we then
perform a careful study on the decay rate, polarization asymmetry and
