From Grutter to Fisher: Is Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s Legacy in Danger?
[Excerpt] “This paper explores the impact of Justice O’Connor on the Court’s race and education jurisprudence, both in the context of primary through secondary school education and in public universities. Section II outlines Justice O’Connor’s biography and explores several external influences on the Justice. Section III reviews the Court’s race and education jurisprudence prior to Justice O’Connor’s appointment to the Court. Section IV exposes the Court’s jurisprudence in this area during Justice O’Connor’s time on the Court, with an emphasis on those opinions authored by Justice O’Connor. Section V offers an analysis of the aftermath of Justice O’Connor’s race and education jurisprudence, beginning with Section V(A) addressing the state of the law after Justice O’Connor’s majority opinion in Grutter v. Bollinger. Section V(B) discusses the Court’s race and education jurisprudence following Justice O’Connor’s tenure, primarily through an analysis of Parents Involved in Community Schools. Finally, Section V(C) hypothesizes the future of race-conscious decision-making in education and Justice O’Connor’s legacy through the lens of Fisher v. University of Texas at Austin. Section VI concludes this paper.
IL-1 regulates the IL-23 response to wheat gliadin, the etiologic agent of Celiac Disease
Celiac disease (CD) is an autoimmune disease prevalent in ~1% of the general population. CD is unique because both the major genetic (Human Leukocyte Antigen-DQ2/DQ8 alleles) and etiologic factors (dietary glutens) for susceptibility are known. While these alleles are responsible for the inappropriate T cell response that characterizes CD, they are not sufficient since most HLA-DQ2+/DQ8+ individuals exposed to glutens never develop disease. The reasons for this have not been explained; however our novel findings strongly advocate a role for interleukin-23 (IL-23) in the immunopathogenesis of CD. We demonstrate that wheat gliadin stimulates monocytes to produce significantly higher amounts of inflammatory cytokines IL-1b, IL-23, and tumor necrosis factor-a (TNFa) in CD patients compared to HLA-DQ2+ healthy individuals. Furthermore, we determine that IL-1 signalling is obligatory for production of IL-23, since IL-1b triggers IL-23 secretion in a dose-dependent manner and IL-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) blocks IL-23 responses to gliadin. Our results suggest that gliadin activation of monocytes and the subsequent robust secretion of IL-1b and IL-23 initiate the immune response cascade that is manifest as CD, and reveal for the first time that the IL-1 system regulates production of IL-23. The discovery of IL-23 has highlighted the critical role of the innate immune response in autoimmunity and other inflammatory conditions. We anticipate that our novel findings will lead to the discovery of therapeutic targets for this disease and other inflammatory diseases mediated by IL-23
Reengineering Biomedical Engineering Curricula: A New Product Development Approach
Product development engineers in medical industries have created design control procedures to ensure high quality designs that are as error-free as possible. The reason is simple; companies must adhere to certain engineering and manufacturing best practices in order to obtain certification of their devices for sale in the US and abroad. We describe here an ongoing effort to apply these industrial best practices to the design and implementation of a novel sequence of undergraduate biomedical computing courses within the Department of Bio-medical Engineering at Marquette University (Milwaukee, Wisconsin). We have tightly integrated our industrial advisory board into this design and development effort. The board has contributed to significantly to the orderly generation of curricular requirements, the development of course implementation designs and the evaluation of these designs per requirements
Comparison of wind speed measurements over the oceans with the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager and the Geosat altimeter
In order to compare wind speed estimates from the Geosat altimeter and the Special Sensor Microwave/Imager (SSM/I), 25 colocated passes, within 2 hours of each other, were selected and the SSM/I estimates of wind speed and atmospheric parameters extracted along the Geosat track. Both instruments and their algorithms are described. A statistical comparison of wind speed estimates is presented and the effects of the atmospheric parameters from Geosat are analyzed. Quasi-simultaneous measurements by Geosat and SSM/I, along a Geosat track in the North-East Pacific, are also presented
