    FEM Analysis on the Effects of Soft Magnetic Film as a Noise Suppressor at GHz Range

    During orthodontic tooth movement, the early response of periodontal tissues to mechanical stress is an acute inflammatory reaction. Mechanical stress from orthodontic appliances is believed to induce cells in the periodontal ligament (PDL) to form biologically active substances, such as enzymes and cytokines, responsible for connective tissue remodeling (Nishijima Y et al 2006). Leptin, a polypeptide hormone has been classified as a cytokine (Zhang et al 1994). Earlier findings suggested that leptin does play a significant role in bone formation by its direct effect on osteoblasts (Alparslan et al 2010). This pilot study aimed to study leptin in saliva and its association with tooth movement during initial orthodontic alignment. To determine if there is any difference in saliva leptin level before and after orthodontic alignment Ten orthodontic patients (7 girls and 3 boys; mean age, 16.76 ± 1.1 years) with crowding (up to 5mm) that required orthodontic fixed appliances, on a non-extraction basis as part of the treatment plan, were recruited in this longitudinal study. Orthodontic study models were constructed at baseline and at 6-weeks after orthodontic treatment commenced. Full fixed orthodontic appliances with initial 0.014” Nickel Titanium archwire placed. The amount of crowding was measured, before and after initial alignment. Unstimulated morning saliva sample were collected at all visits, after at least an 8-hour period of fasting and no-toothbrushing. The samples were tested using Leptin Abnova LEP Human ELISA kit and subsequently analyzed. Leptin concentration in saliva was significantly decreased in a time-dependant manner (p<0.001), from before orthodontic treatment (7016.45±425.15 pg/mL) and 6 weeks after bond-up (4901.92±238.64 pg/mL).     Spectral-domain optical coherence phase and multiphoton microscopy

    We describe simultaneous quantitative phase contrast and multiphoton fluorescence imaging by combined spectral-domain optical coherence phase and multiphoton microscopy. The instrument employs two light sources for efficient optical coherence microscopic and multiphoton imaging and can generate structural and functional images of transparent specimens in the epidirection. Phase contrast imaging exhibits spatial and temporal phase stability in the subnanometer range. We also demonstrate the visualization of actin filaments in a fixed cell specimen, which is confirmed by simultaneous multiphoton fluorescence imaging. © 2007 Optical Society of America

    Generalised Kawada-Satake method for Mackey functors in class field theory

    We propose and study a generalised Kawada--Satake method for Mackey functors in the class field theory of positive characteristic. The root of this method is in the use of explicit pairings, such as the Artin--Schreier--Witt pairing, for groups describing abelian extensions. We separate and simplify the algebraic component of the method and discuss a relation between the existence theorem in class field theory and topological reflexivity with respect to the explicit pairing. We apply this method to derive higher local class field theory of positive characteristic, using advanced properties of topological Milnor K-groups of such fields

    Lack of Association between Hepatitis B Virus Infection and Polymorphism of Mannose-Binding Lectin Gene in Korean Population

    Mannose-binding lectin (MBL) plays an important role in immune defense. This study was undertaken to investigate the association between hepatitis B virus infection and polymorphisms of MBL gene. We assessed the single nucleotide polymorphism at codon 54 in exon 1 of MBL in patients with hepatitis B virus infection and HBsAg negative controls in Korean population. A total of 498 enrolled subjects was classified into four groups. Group 1; Clearance, Group 2; Inactive healthy carrier, Group 3; Chronic hepatitis, Group 4; Liver cirrhosis. MBL gene polymorphisms at codon 54 led to three genotypes (G/G, G/A, A/A). When we divided subjects into clearance group (group 1) and persistence group (group 2-4), G/G genotype and A-allele carrier were observed in 55.6% and 44.4% in clearance group, 64.8% and 35.2% in persistence group (p=0.081), respectively. When hepatitis B virus persistent cases were divided into inactive healthy carrier (group 2) and disease progression group (group 3 and 4), MBL gene polymorphisms at codon 54 were not related to disease progression (p=0.166). MBL gene polymorphism at codon 54 was not associated with the clearance of hepatitis B virus infection nor progression of disease in chronic hepatitis B virus infection
