    Highly p-doped graphene obtained by fluorine intercalation

    We present a method for decoupling epitaxial graphene grown on SiC(0001) by intercalation of a layer of fluorine at the interface. The fluorine atoms do not enter into a covalent bond with graphene, but rather saturate the substrate Si bonds. This configuration of the fluorine atoms induces a remarkably large hole density of p \approx 4.5 \times 1013 cm-2, equivalent to the location of the Fermi level at 0.79 eV above the Dirac point ED .Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, in print AP

    High-dimensional fractionalization and spinon deconfinement in pyrochlore antiferromagnets

    The ground states of Klein type spin models on the pyrochlore and checkerboard lattice are spanned by the set of singlet dimer coverings, and thus possess an extensive ground--state degeneracy. Among the many exotic consequences is the presence of deconfined fractional excitations (spinons) which propagate through the entire system. While a realistic electronic model on the pyrochlore lattice is close to the Klein point, this point is in fact inherently unstable because any perturbation ϵ\epsilon restores spinon confinement at T=0T = 0. We demonstrate that deconfinement is recovered in the finite--temperature region ϵTJ\epsilon \ll T \ll J, where the deconfined phase can be characterized as a dilute Coulomb gas of thermally excited spinons. We investigate the zero--temperature phase diagram away from the Klein point by means of a variational approach based on the singlet dimer coverings of the pyrochlore lattices and taking into account their non--orthogonality. We find that in these systems, nearest neighbor exchange interactions do not lead to Rokhsar-Kivelson type processes.Comment: 19 page

    Preliminary Effects of Oral Uridine on the Ocular Surface in Dry Eye Patients

    We designed a randomized, double blinded, 3-months controlled prospective clinical study to investigate effects of oral uridine on the ocular surface in dry eye patients. Twenty-seven patients who diagnosed as dry eye with lower than 5 mm of wetting in the Schirmer strip, with corneal epithelial erosion and who completely followed-up till 3 months were enrolled. Corneal-conjunctival fluorescein staining, non-anesthetic Schirmer test, impression cytology, and Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) were evaluated in the experimental and placebo groups at the baseline, 1 and 3 months after start of medication in a double blinded manner. Fluorescein stain score of the cornea was markedly decreased in oral uridine group compared to the placebo group at 3 months after medication (P=0.032, Mann-Whitney U test). The Schirmer wetting score for the oral uridine group was significantly increased (P=0.001, Wilcoxon signed rank test) at 3 months and its difference between two groups was statistically significant (P=0.030, Mann-Whitney U test). OSDI scores were significantly decreased at 1 and 3 months in treatment group. Oral uridine is effective in treatment of dry eyes

    Effects of pH on Vascular Tone in Rabbit Basilar Arteries

    Effects of pH on vascular tone and L-type Ca2+ channels were investigated using Mulvany myograph and voltage-clamp technique in rabbit basilar arteries. In rabbitbasilar arteries, high K+ produced tonic contractions by 11±0.6 mN (mean±S.E., n=19). When extracellular pH (pHo) was changed from control 7.4 to 7.9 ([alkalosis]o), K+-induced contraction was increased to 128±2.1% of the control (n=13). However, K+-induced contraction was decreased to 73±1.3% of the control at pHo 6.8 ([acidosis]o, n=4). Histamine (10 µM) also produced tonic contraction by 11±0.6 mN (n=17), which was blocked by post-application of nicardipine (1 µM). [alkalosis]o and [acidosis]o increased or decreased histamine-induced contraction to 134±5.7% and 27±7.6% of the control (n=4, 6). Since high K+- and histamine-induced tonic contractions were affected by nicardipine and pHo, the effect of pHo on voltage-dependent L-type Ca2+ channel (VDCCL) was studied. VDCCL was modulated by pHo: the peak value of Ca2+ channel current (IBa) at a holding of 0 mV decreased in [acidosis]o by 41±8.8%, whereas that increased in [alkalosis]o by 35±2.1% (n=3). These results suggested that the external pH regulates vascular tone partly via the modulation of VDCC in rabbit basilar arteries

    Mathematical model of a telomerase transcriptional regulatory network developed by cell-based screening: analysis of inhibitor effects and telomerase expression mechanisms

    Cancer cells depend on transcription of telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT). Many transcription factors affect TERT, though regulation occurs in context of a broader network. Network effects on telomerase regulation have not been investigated, though deeper understanding of TERT transcription requires a systems view. However, control over individual interactions in complex networks is not easily achievable. Mathematical modelling provides an attractive approach for analysis of complex systems and some models may prove useful in systems pharmacology approaches to drug discovery. In this report, we used transfection screening to test interactions among 14 TERT regulatory transcription factors and their respective promoters in ovarian cancer cells. The results were used to generate a network model of TERT transcription and to implement a dynamic Boolean model whose steady states were analysed. Modelled effects of signal transduction inhibitors successfully predicted TERT repression by Src-family inhibitor SU6656 and lack of repression by ERK inhibitor FR180204, results confirmed by RT-QPCR analysis of endogenous TERT expression in treated cells. Modelled effects of GSK3 inhibitor 6-bromoindirubin-3′-oxime (BIO) predicted unstable TERT repression dependent on noise and expression of JUN, corresponding with observations from a previous study. MYC expression is critical in TERT activation in the model, consistent with its well known function in endogenous TERT regulation. Loss of MYC caused complete TERT suppression in our model, substantially rescued only by co-suppression of AR. Interestingly expression was easily rescued under modelled Ets-factor gain of function, as occurs in TERT promoter mutation. RNAi targeting AR, JUN, MXD1, SP3, or TP53, showed that AR suppression does rescue endogenous TERT expression following MYC knockdown in these cells and SP3 or TP53 siRNA also cause partial recovery. The model therefore successfully predicted several aspects of TERT regulation including previously unknown mechanisms. An extrapolation suggests that a dominant stimulatory system may programme TERT for transcriptional stability

    On the Inverse Problem of Binocular 3D Motion Perception

    It is shown that existing processing schemes of 3D motion perception such as interocular velocity difference, changing disparity over time, as well as joint encoding of motion and disparity, do not offer a general solution to the inverse optics problem of local binocular 3D motion. Instead we suggest that local velocity constraints in combination with binocular disparity and other depth cues provide a more flexible framework for the solution of the inverse problem. In the context of the aperture problem we derive predictions from two plausible default strategies: (1) the vector normal prefers slow motion in 3D whereas (2) the cyclopean average is based on slow motion in 2D. Predicting perceived motion directions for ambiguous line motion provides an opportunity to distinguish between these strategies of 3D motion processing. Our theoretical results suggest that velocity constraints and disparity from feature tracking are needed to solve the inverse problem of 3D motion perception. It seems plausible that motion and disparity input is processed in parallel and integrated late in the visual processing hierarchy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>While keyword based queries of databases such as Pubmed are frequently of great utility, the ability to use regular expressions in place of a keyword can often improve the results output by such databases. Regular expressions can allow for the identification of element types that cannot be readily specified by a single keyword and can allow for different words with similar character sequences to be distinguished.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A Perl based utility was developed to allow the use of regular expressions in Pubmed searches, thereby improving the accuracy of the searches.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>This utility was then utilized to create a comprehensive listing of all DFN deafness mutations discussed in Pubmed records containing the keywords "human ear".</p
