An analysis of space power system masses
Various space electrical power system masses are analyzed with particular emphasis on the power management and distribution (PMAD) portion. The electrical power system (EPS) is divided into functional blocks: source, interconnection, storage, transmission, distribution, system control and load. The PMAD subsystem is defined as all the blocks between the source, storage and load, plus the power conditioning equipment required for the source, storage and load. The EPS mass of a wide range of spacecraft is then classified as source, storage or PMAD and tabulated in a database. The intent of the database is to serve as a reference source for PMAD masses of existing and in-design spacecraft. The PMAD masses in the database range from 40 kg/kW to 183 kg/kW across the spacecraft systems studied. Factors influencing the power system mass are identified. These include the total spacecraft power requirements, total amount of load capacity and physical size of the spacecraft. It is found that a new utility class of power systems, represented by Space Station Freedom, is evolving
Improved Limits on Sterile Neutrino Dark Matter using Full-Sky Fermi Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor Data
A sterile neutrino of ~keV mass is a well motivated dark matter candidate.
Its decay generates an X-ray line that offers a unique target for X-ray
telescopes. For the first time, we use the Gamma-ray Burst Monitor (GBM)
onboard the Fermi Gamma-Ray Space Telescope to search for sterile neutrino
decay lines; our analysis covers the energy range 10-25 keV (sterile neutrino
mass 20-50 keV), which is inaccessible to X-ray and gamma-ray satellites such
as Chandra, Suzaku, XMM-Newton, and INTEGRAL. The extremely wide field of view
of the GBM enables a large fraction of the Milky Way dark matter halo to be
probed. After implementing careful data cuts, we obtain ~53 days of full sky
observational data. We observe an excess of photons towards the Galactic
Center, as expected from astrophysical emission. We search for sterile neutrino
decay lines in the energy spectrum, and find no significant signal. From this,
we obtain upper limits on the sterile neutrino mixing angle as a function of
mass. In the sterile neutrino mass range 25-40 keV, we improve upon previous
upper limits by approximately an order of magnitude. Better understanding of
detector and astrophysical backgrounds, as well as detector response, will
further improve the sensitivity of a search with the GBM.Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, references added, discussion expanded, some

Intelligent and adaptive tutoring for active learning and training environments
Active learning facilitated through interactive and adaptive learning environments differs substantially from traditional instructor-oriented, classroom-based teaching. We present a Web-based e-learning environment that integrates knowledge learning and skills training. How these tools are used most effectively is still an open question. We propose knowledge-level interaction and adaptive feedback and guidance as central features. We discuss these features and evaluate the effectiveness of this Web-based environment, focusing on different aspects of learning behaviour and tool usage. Motivation, acceptance of the approach, learning organisation and actual tool usage are aspects of behaviour that require different evaluation techniques to be used
Therapeutically targeting mitochondrial redox signalling alleviates endothelial dysfunction in preeclampsia
Aberrant placentation generating placental oxidative stress is proposed to play a critical role in the pathophysiology of preeclampsia. Unfortunately, therapeutic trials of antioxidants have been uniformly disappointing. There is provisional evidence implicating mitochondrial dysfunction as a source of oxidative stress in preeclampsia. Here we provide evidence that mitochondrial reactive oxygen species mediates endothelial dysfunction and establish that directly targeting mitochondrial scavenging may provide a protective role. Human umbilical vein endothelial cells exposed to 3% plasma from women with pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia resulted in a significant decrease in mitochondrial function with a subsequent significant increase in mitochondrial superoxide generation compared to cells exposed to plasma from women with uncomplicated pregnancies. Real-time PCR analysis showed increased expression of inflammatory markers TNF-α, TLR-9 and ICAM-1 respectively in endothelial cells treated with preeclampsia plasma. MitoTempo is a mitochondrial-targeted antioxidant, pre-treatment of cells with MitoTempo protected against hydrogen peroxide-induced cell death. Furthermore MitoTempo significantly reduced mitochondrial superoxide production in cells exposed to preeclampsia plasma by normalising mitochondrial metabolism. MitoTempo significantly altered the inflammatory profile of plasma treated cells. These novel data support a functional role for mitochondrial redox signaling in modulating the pathogenesis of preeclampsia and identifies mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants as potential therapeutic candidates
Supporting active database learning and training through interactive multimedia
The learning objectives of a database course include aspects from conceptual and theoretical knowledge to practical development and implementation skills. We present an interactive educational multimedia system based on the virtual apprenticeship model for the knowledge- and skills-oriented Web-based education of database course students. Combining knowledge learning and skills training in an integrated environment is a central aspect of our system. We show that tool-mediated independent learning and training in an authentic setting is an alternative to traditional classroom-based approaches
Mitochondrial [dys]function; culprit in pre-eclampsia?
Mitochondria are extensively identified for their bioenergetic capacities; however, recently these metabolic hubs are increasingly being appreciated as critical regulators of numerous cellular signalling systems. Mitochondrial reactive oxygen species have evolved as a mode of cross-talk between mitochondrial function and physiological systems, to sustain equipoise and foster adaption to cellular stress. Redox signalling mediated by exaggerated mitochondrial-ROS (reactive oxygen species) has been incriminated in a plethora of disease pathologies. Excessive production of mitochondrial ROS is intrinsically linked to mitochondrial dysfunction. Furthermore, mitochondrial dysfunction is a key facilitator of oxidative stress, inflammation, apoptosis and metabolism. These are key pathogenic intermediaries of pre-eclampsia, hence we hypothesize that mitochondrial dysfunction is a pathogenic mediator of oxidative stress in the pathophysiology of pre-eclampsia. We hypothesize that mitochondrial-targeted antioxidants may restrain production of ROS-mediated deleterious redox signalling pathways. If our hypothesis proves correct, therapeutic strategies directly targeting mitochondrial superoxide scavenging should be actively pursued as they may alleviate maternal vascular dysfunction and dramatically improve maternal and fetal health worldwide
Difference score correlations in relationship research: A conceptual primer
The practice of computing correlations between âdifferenceâ or âdiscrepancyâ scores and an outcome variable is common in many areas of social science. Relationship researchers most commonly use difference scores to index the (dis)similarity of members of two-person relationships. Using an intuitive, graphical approachâand avoiding formulas and pointing fingersâwe illustrate problems with using difference score correlations in relationship research, suggest ways to ensure that difference score correlations are maximally informative, and briefly review alternatives to difference score correlations in studying similarity, accuracy, and related constructs.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/73008/1/j.1475-6811.1999.tb00206.x.pd
Cloning and Sequencing of Protein Kinase cDNA from Harbor Seal (Phoca vitulina) Lymphocytes
Protein kinases (PKs) play critical roles in signal transduction and
activation of lymphocytes. The identification of PK genes provides a tool for
understanding mechanisms of immunotoxic xenobiotics. As part of a larger study
investigating persistent organic pollutants in the harbor seal and their possible
immunomodulatory actions, we sequenced harbor seal cDNA fragments encoding
PKs. The procedure, using degenerate primers based on conserved motifs of
human protein tyrosine kinases (PTKs), successfully amplified nine phocid PK gene
fragments with high homology to human and rodent orthologs. We identified eight
PTKs and one dual (serine/threonine and tyrosine) kinase. Among these were
several PKs important in early signaling events through the B- and T-cell receptors
(FYN, LYN, ITK and SYK) and a MAP kinase involved in downstream signal
transduction. V-FGR, RET and DDR2 were also expressed. Sequential activation
of protein kinases ultimately induces gene transcription leading to the proliferation
and differentiation of lymphocytes critical to adaptive immunity. PKs are potential
targets of bioactive xenobiotics, including persistent organic pollutants of the marine
environment; characterization of these molecules in the harbor seal provides
a foundation for further research illuminating mechanisms of action of contaminants
speculated to contribute to large-scale
die-offs of marine mammals via immunosuppression
NuSTAR Tests of Sterile-Neutrino Dark Matter: New Galactic Bulge Observations and Combined Impact
We analyze two dedicated NuSTAR observations with exposure ks
located from the Galactic plane, one above and the other
below, to search for x-ray lines from the radiative decay of sterile-neutrino
dark matter. These fields were chosen to minimize astrophysical x-ray
backgrounds while remaining near the densest region of the dark matter halo. We
find no evidence of anomalous x-ray lines in the energy range 5--20 keV,
corresponding to sterile neutrino masses 10--40 keV. Interpreted in the context
of sterile neutrinos produced via neutrino mixing, these observations provide
the leading constraints in the mass range 10--12 keV, improving upon previous
constraints in this range by a factor . We also compare our results to
Monte Carlo simulations, showing that the fluctuations in our derived limit are
not dominated by systematic effects. An updated model of the instrumental
background, which is currently under development, will improve NuSTAR's
sensitivity to anomalous x-ray lines, particularly for energies 3--5 keV.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures. Text updated to match published version in PRD.
