The identification and psychological treatment of panic disorder in adolescents: a survey of CAMHS clinicians
Background
Panic disorder is experienced by around 1% of adolescents, and has a significant impact on social and academic functioning. Preliminary evidence supports the effectiveness of panic disorder specific treatment in adolescents with panic disorder, however panic disorder may be overlooked in adolescents due to overlapping symptoms with other anxiety disorders and other difficulties being more noticeable to others. The aim of this study was to establish what training National Health Service (NHS) Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) clinicians have received in psychological therapies and panic disorder and how they identify and treat panic disorder in adolescents.
Method
CAMHS clinicians from a range of professions (n = 427), who were delivering psychological treatments to children and adolescents with anxiety disorders, participated. They completed a cross-sectional, online survey, including a vignette describing an adolescent with panic disorder, and were asked to identify the main diagnosis or presenting problem.
Results
Less than half the clinicians (48.6%) identified panic disorder or panic symptoms as the main presenting problem from the vignette. The majority of clinicians suggested CBT would be their treatment approach. However, few identified an evidence-based treatment protocol for working with young people with panic disorder. Almost half the sample had received no training in cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) and around a fifth had received no training in delivering psychological treatments.
Conclusions
Only half of CAMHS clinicians identified panic disorder from a vignette and although CBT treatments are widely offered, only a minority of adolescents with panic disorder are receiving treatments developed for, and evaluated with young people with panic disorder. There is a vital need for clinician training, the use of tools that aid identification and the implementation of evidence-based treatments within CAMHS
Human Performance Assessments in Cadet Populations
This study assessed potential physiological differences between the Ranger Challenge (RC) Competition team and junior year cadets in an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program. The method included: RC (m = 11, f = 2) and junior year cadets (m = 7, f = 3) were assessed in the following areas: 1) quickness and agility (5-10-5 shuttle run), 2) total-body power (standing broad jump), and 3) grip strength (hand grip dynamometry) assessed. The 5-10-5 shuttle run was performed twice (opening once to the left and once to the right). The standing broad jump required that cadets stand with their toes behind a line, perform a maximum of three preparatory movements, triple extend their knees, hips, and ankles while using their upper body to propel them as far forward as possible. After the jump the distanced reached was measured from the line to the heel of the nearest foot. Hand grip dynamometry was performed once on each hand. The cadet held the dynamometer out to his or her side and squeezed it as they lowered it to their hip. The results were that there were no significant differences between groups for the 5-10-5 shuttle run (p = 0.91), standing broad jump (p = 0.49), or grip strength (p = 0.31). RC did not outperform
Update: Accurate Determinations of alpha_s from Realistic Lattice QCD
We use lattice QCD simulations, with MILC configurations (including vacuum
polarization from u, d, and s quarks), to update our previous determinations of
the QCD coupling constant. Our new analysis uses results from 6 different
lattice spacings and 12 different combinations of sea-quark masses to
significantly reduce our previous errors. We also correct for
finite-lattice-spacing errors in the scale setting, and for nonperturbative
chiral corrections to the 22 short-distance quantities from which we extract
the coupling. Our final result is alpha_V(7.5GeV,nf=3) = 0.2120(28), which is
equivalent to alpha_msbar(M_Z,n_f=5)= 0.1183(8). We compare this with our
previous result, which differs by one standard deviation.Comment: 12 pages, 2 figures, 4 table
Dual fear phenomenon in an eco-epidemiological model with prey aggregation
This study presents a thorough analysis of an eco-epidemiological model that
integrates infectious diseases in prey, prey aggregation, and the dual fear
effect induced by predators. We establish criteria for determining the
existence of equilibrium points, which carry substantial biological
significance. We establish the conditions for the occurrence of Hopf,
saddle-node, and transcritical bifurcations by employing fear parameters as key
bifurcation parameters. Furthermore, through numerical simulations, we
demonstrate the occurrence of multiple zero-Hopf (ZH) and saddle-node
transcritical (SNTC) bifurcations around the endemic steady states by varying
specific key parameters across the two-parametric plane. We demonstrate that
the introduction of predator-induced fear, which hinders the growth rate of
susceptible prey, can lead to the finite time extinction of an initially stable
susceptible prey population. Finally, we discuss management strategies aimed at
regulating disease transmission, focusing on fear-based interventions and
selective predation via predator attack rate on infectious prey
A Prediction of the B*_c mass in full lattice QCD
By using the Highly Improved Staggered Quark formalism to handle charm,
strange and light valence quarks in full lattice QCD, and NRQCD to handle
bottom valence quarks we are able to determine accurately ratios of the B meson
vector-pseudoscalar mass splittings, in particular,
(m(B*_c)-m(B_c))/(m(B*_s)-m(B_s)). We find this ratio to be 1.15(15), showing
the `light' quark mass dependence of this splitting to be very small. Hence we
predict m(B_c*) = 6.330(7)(2)(6) GeV where the first two errors are from the
lattice calculation and the third from existing experiment. This is the most
accurate prediction of a gold-plated hadron mass from lattice QCD to date.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figure
A New Approach to Time Domain Classification of Broadband Noise in Gravitational Wave Data
Broadband noise in gravitational wave (GW) detectors, also known as triggers,
can often be a deterrant to the efficiency with which astrophysical search
pipelines detect sources. It is important to understand their instrumental or
environmental origin so that they could be eliminated or accounted for in the
data. Since the number of triggers is large, data mining approaches such as
clustering and classification are useful tools for this task. Classification of
triggers based on a handful of discrete properties has been done in the past. A
rich information content is available in the waveform or 'shape' of the
triggers that has had a rather restricted exploration so far. This paper
presents a new way to classify triggers deriving information from both trigger
waveforms as well as their discrete physical properties using a sequential
combination of the Longest Common Sub-Sequence (LCSS) and LCSS coupled with
Fast Time Series Evaluation (FTSE) for waveform classification and the
multidimensional hierarchical classification (MHC) analysis for the grouping
based on physical properties. A generalized k-means algorithm is used with the
LCSS (and LCSS+FTSE) for clustering the triggers using a validity measure to
determine the correct number of clusters in absence of any prior knowledge. The
results have been demonstrated by simulations and by application to a segment
of real LIGO data from the sixth science run.Comment: 16 pages, 16 figure
Adolescent dietary patterns are associated with lifestyle family psycho-social factors
Background/ Objectives: Dietary intake during adolescence contributes to lifelong eating habits and the development of early risk factors for disease in adulthood. Few studies have examined the dietary patterns of adolescents and the social and environmental factors that may affect them during this life stage. The present study describes dietary patterns in a cohort of adolescents and examines their associations with socioeconomic factors, as well as parental and adolescent risk factor behaviours.
Design: A semi quantitative FFQ was used to assess study adolescents’ usual dietary intake over the previous year. Information was collected on family functioning and various socio economic and risk factor variables via questionnaire. Adolescents visited the clinic for anthropometric measurements.
Setting: The Western Australian Pregnancy Cohort Study (Raine Study), Perth, Western Australia.
Subjects: Adolescents (n 1631) aged 14 years from a pregnancy cohort study.
Results: Factor analysis identified two distinct dietary patterns that differed predominantly in fat and sugar intakes. The ‘Western’ pattern consisted of high intakes of take away foods, soft drinks, confectionery, French fries, refined grains, full fat dairy products and processed meats. The ‘Healthy’’ pattern included high intakes of whole grains, fruit, vegetables, legumes and fish. ANOVA showed that the ‘Western’ dietary pattern was positively associated with greater television viewing and having a parent that smoked, and was inversely associated with family income. The ‘Healthy’’ pattern was positively associated with female gender, greater maternal education, better family functioning and being in a two parent family, and was inversely associated with television viewing.
Conclusions: This study suggests that both lifestyle factors and family psycho social environment are related to eating patterns in Australian adolescents
