Combined CI+MBPT calculations of energy levels and transition amplitudes in Be, Mg, Ca, and Sr
Configuration interaction (CI) calculations in atoms with two valence
electrons, carried out in the V(N-2) Hartree-Fock potential of the core, are
corrected for core-valence interactions using many-body perturbation theory
(MBPT). Two variants of the mixed CI+MBPT theory are described and applied to
obtain energy levels and transition amplitudes for Be, Mg, Ca, and Sr
The Value of Information for Populations in Varying Environments
The notion of information pervades informal descriptions of biological
systems, but formal treatments face the problem of defining a quantitative
measure of information rooted in a concept of fitness, which is itself an
elusive notion. Here, we present a model of population dynamics where this
problem is amenable to a mathematical analysis. In the limit where any
information about future environmental variations is common to the members of
the population, our model is equivalent to known models of financial
investment. In this case, the population can be interpreted as a portfolio of
financial assets and previous analyses have shown that a key quantity of
Shannon's communication theory, the mutual information, sets a fundamental
limit on the value of information. We show that this bound can be violated when
accounting for features that are irrelevant in finance but inherent to
biological systems, such as the stochasticity present at the individual level.
This leads us to generalize the measures of uncertainty and information usually
encountered in information theory

Measurement of the Decay Asymmetry Parameters in and
We have measured the weak decay asymmetry parameters (\aLC ) for two \LC\
decay modes. Our measurements are \aLC = -0.94^{+0.21+0.12}_{-0.06-0.06} for
the decay mode and \aLC = -0.45\pm 0.31 \pm
0.06 for the decay mode . By combining these
measurements with the previously measured decay rates, we have extracted the
parity-violating and parity-conserving amplitudes. These amplitudes are used to
test models of nonleptonic charmed baryon decay.Comment: 11 pages including the figures. Uses REVTEX and psfig macros. Figures

Measurement of the branching fraction for
We have studied the leptonic decay of the resonance into tau
pairs using the CLEO II detector. A clean sample of tau pair events is
identified via events containing two charged particles where exactly one of the
particles is an identified electron. We find . The result is consistent with
expectations from lepton universality.Comment: 9 pages, RevTeX, two Postscript figures available upon request, CLNS

Production and Decay of D_1(2420)^0 and D_2^*(2460)^0
We have investigated and final states and
observed the two established charmed mesons, the with mass
MeV/c and width MeV/c and
the with mass MeV/c and width
MeV/c. Properties of these final states, including
their decay angular distributions and spin-parity assignments, have been
studied. We identify these two mesons as the doublet predicted
by HQET. We also obtain constraints on {\footnotesize } as a function of the cosine of the relative phase of the two
amplitudes in the decay.Comment: 15 pages in REVTEX format. hardcopies with figures can be obtained by

Microplastics Detected in Groundwater
Low concentrations of microplastics are present in Illinois’ karst groundwater, according to a preliminary study completed in spring 2018. This is the first time that microplastics have been detected in groundwater. The study was conducted in collaboration with scientists at the Illinois State Geological Survey, Illinois State Water Survey, Loyola University Chicago, and ISTC. Full study results published in Panno, S.V., Kelly, W.R., Scott, J., Zheng, W., McNeish, R.E., Holm, N., Hoellein, T.J. and Baranski, E.L. Configuration-interaction calculations of positron binding to group-II elements
The configuration-interaction (CI) method is applied to the study of positronic magnesium (e+Mg), positronic calcium (e+Ca), and positronic strontium (e+Sr). The CI expansion was seen to converge slowly with respect to Lmax, the maximum angular momentum of any orbital used to construct the CI basis. Despite doing explicit calculations with Lmax=10, extrapolation corrections to the binding energies for the Lmax→∞ limit were substantial in the case of e+Ca (25%) and e+Sr (50%). The extrapolated binding energies were 0.0162 hartree for e+Mg, 0.0165 hartree for e+Ca, and 0.0101 hartree for e+Sr. The static-dipole polarizabilities for the neutral parent atoms were computed as a by-product, giving 71.7a03, 162a03, and 204a03 for Mg, Ca, and Sr, respectively

Relativistic calculation of nuclear transparency in (e,e'p) reactions
Nuclear transparency in (e,e'p) reactions is evaluated in a fully
relativistic distorted wave impulse approximation model. The relativistic mean
field theory is used for the bound state and the Pauli reduction for the
scattering state, which is calculated from a relativistic optical potential.
Results for selected nuclei are displayed in a Q^2 range between 0.3 and 1.8
(GeV/c)^2 and compared with recent electron scattering data. For Q^2 = 0.3
(GeV/c)^2 the results are lower than data; for higher Q^2 they are in
reasonable agreement with data. The sensitivity of the model to different
prescriptions for the one-body current operator is investigated. The off-shell
ambiguities are rather large for the distorted cross sections and small for the
plane wave cross sections.Comment: 8 pages, 3 figure
