The diatom stratigraphy and palaeoecology of lake Ohrid, Yugoslavia

An 8.85 m core (No. 9) was taken from Lake Ohrid, Yugoslavia, in August 1973 at a depth of 210 m, approximately 6 km offshore of Gorcia, Yugoslavia. The core was sampled at 10-cm intervals and analyzed for moisture, organic and CaCO3 content, and diatoms. There is a slight but steady decrease of moisture with depth, probably due to sediment compaction. The organic content showed little variation throughout the core ( of total weight). The CaCO3 content from 885-110 cm depth also showed little change ( of total weight) but increased in the top meter of the core (100-0 cm, of total weight). Throughout the core there is an inverse relationship between organic and CaCO3 content, particularly in the top meter.Extrapolation to the bottom of the core using linear regression based on 14C-dating yields a date of ca. 30,000 years B.P.Results indicate that Lake Ohrid has remained an oligotrophic lake throughout the period represented by Core 9. Diatom analysis shows one persistent group of diatoms throughout the core. This group consists of Cyclotella fottii, C. hustedtii, and C. hustedtii var.1 and is referred to as the Cyclotella complex.Between 885-650 cm (ca. 30,000-20,000 yr B.P.) there is a sharp increase in numbers and a slight increase in diversity of species. This may correspond with the beginning of the warmer, more humid middle Pleniglacial.Between 650-100 cm (ca. 20,000-10,000 yr B.P.) the Cyclotella complex appears usually alone in small number. There are a few other scattered species in this section, mainly Opephora martyi and Fragilaria pinnata. This section of the core probably corresponds with the cold upper Pleniglacial of the Wurm (Weichselian).Between 100-0 cm (ca. 10,000-0 yr B.P.) there is the largest increase in number and diversity of species, particularly above 60 cm. The Cyclotella complex, C. ocellata, Cyclotella sp.1, Stephanodiscus astraea var. intermedia fo.11 and Stephanodiscus sp.1 are dominant. This is the only section of the core in which Stephanodiscus species occur, and probably corresponds with the Holocene.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/25175/1/0000614.pd

Large uterus: what is the limit for a laparoscopic approach?

    Get PDF
Hysterectomy is the most common surgical gynecologic procedure, which is frequently related to the treatment of leiomyoma. The laparoscopic hysterectomy is associated with a shorter hospital stay, fewer infection rates, and a faster return to daily activities. Most gynecologists do not recommend a hysterectomy via the vagina or a laparoscopic-assisted vaginal hysterectomy (LAVH) in the case of a uterus weighing more than 300 g. This case report presents the case of an LAVH undertaken in a 43-year-old patient with a uterus weighing 2,800 g. There are no definite guidelines concerning the procedure for a large uterus, and the literature is vague regarding the best surgical procedure for these cases. The size of the uterus does not seem to be an absolute contraindication for endoscopic surgery. This procedure relies entirely on the surgeon’s abilit

Cultural trauma, counter-narratives, and dialogical intellectuals: the works of Murakami Haruki and Mori Tatsuya in the context of the Aum affair

In this article, we offer a new conceptualization of intellectuals as carriers of cultural trauma through a case study of the Aum Affair, a series of crimes and terrorist attacks committed by the Japanese new religious movement Aum Shinrikyō. In understanding the performative roles intellectuals play in trauma construction, we offer a new dichotomy between “authoritative intellectuals,” who draw on their privileged parcours and status to impose a distinct trauma narrative, and “dialogical intellectuals,” who engage with local actors dialogically to produce polyphonic and open-ended trauma narratives. We identify three dimensions of dialogical intellectual action: firstly, the intellectuals may be involved in dialogue with local participants; secondly, the intellectual products themselves may be dialogical in content; and thirdly, there might be a concerted effort on the part of the intellectuals to record and to disseminate dialogue between local participants. In the context of the Aum Affair, we analyze the works of Murakami Haruki and Mori Tatsuya as dialogical intellectuals while they sought, with the help of local actors’ experiences, to challenge and to alter the orthodox trauma narrative of Aum Shinrikyō as exclusively a social evil external to Japanese society and an enemy to be excluded from it. Towards the end of the article, we discuss the broader significance of this case study and suggest that in light of recent societal and technological developments, the role and scope of dialogical intellectuals as carriers of trauma are changing and possibly expanding

The independent and interactive effects of snail grazing and nutrient enrichment on structuring periphyton communities

We investigated the independent and interactive effects of nutrient enrichment and snail grazing on structuring periphyton communities in a northern temperate lake. Nutrient releasing substrates and grazer enclosures were used to simultaneously manipulate nutrient availability and herbivory. Periphyton was allowed 18 days to accrue before grazers ( Elimia livescens = Goniobasis livescens ) were introduced.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/42878/1/10750_2004_Article_BF00006063.pd

    Pinelands Development Credit evaluation report

    No full text
This report results from a contract between the investigator and the New Jersey Pine lands Commission supported by a grant from the Fund for New Jersey. Under the terms of the contract the investigator was required to conduct a series of interviews with developers, attorneys, realtors, municipal officials and landowners to ascertain individual knowledge and perceptions of the Pinelands Development Credit Program. Additionally, the investigator was to attempt to identify potential demonstration projects that may involve the use of Pinelands Development Credits (PDCs). Finally, the investigator, based upon the interview process, was to prepare this report, submit recommendations to improve public knowledge concerning the program, and recommendations to resolve weaknesses identified during the course of the analysis
