Designing a novel virtual collaborative environment to support collaboration in design review meetings

    Get PDF
Project review meetings are part of the project management process and are organised to assess progress and resolve any design conflicts to avoid delays in construction. One of the key challenges during a project review meeting is to bring the stakeholders together and use this time effectively to address design issues as quickly as possible. At present, current technology solutions based on BIM or CAD are information-centric and do not allow project teams to collectively explore the design from a range of perspectives and brainstorm ideas when design conflicts are encountered. This paper presents a system architecture that can be used to support multi-functional team collaboration more effectively during such design review meetings. The proposed architecture illustrates how information-centric BIM or CAD systems can be made human- and team-centric to enhance team communication and problem solving. An implementation of the proposed system architecture has been tested for its utility, likability and usefulness during design review meetings. The evaluation results suggest that the collaboration platform has the potential to enhance collaboration among multi-functional teams

This study explored the feasibility of localized manganese-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) via 3 different routes of Mn(2+) administrations for visuotopic brain mapping of retinal, callosal, cortico-subcortical, transsynaptic and horizontal connections in normal adult rats. Upon fractionated intravitreal Mn(2+) injection, Mn enhancements were observed in the contralateral superior colliculus (SC) and lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN) by 45-60% at 1-3 days after initial Mn(2+) injection and in the contralateral primary visual cortex (V1) by about 10% at 2-3 days after initial Mn(2+) injection. Direct, single-dose Mn(2+) injection to the LGN resulted in Mn enhancement by 13-21% in V1 and 8-11% in SC of the ipsilateral hemisphere at 8 to 24 hours after Mn(2+) administration. Intracortical, single-dose Mn(2+) injection to the visual cortex resulted in Mn enhancement by 53-65% in ipsilateral LGN, 15-26% in ipsilateral SC, 32-34% in the splenium of corpus callosum and 17-25% in contralateral V1/V2 transition zone at 8 to 24 hours after Mn(2+) administration. Notably, some patchy patterns were apparent near the V1/V2 border of the contralateral hemisphere. Laminar-specific horizontal cortical connections were also observed in the ipsilateral hemisphere. The current results demonstrated the sensitivity of MEMRI for assessing the neuroarchitecture of the visual brains in vivo without depth-limitation, and may possess great potentials for studying the basic neural components and connections in the visual system longitudinally during development, plasticity, pharmacological interventions and genetic modifications.published_or_final_versio

On a discrete-time risk model with delayed claims and dividends

In this paper, we study the discounted free Gerber–Shiu function for the compound binomial risk model with by-claims and randomized dividend policy. Specifically, explicit expression for the discounted free Gerber–Shiu function is obtained. This result allows us to derive formulae for some useful insurance quantities, including the ruin probability, the probability function of the deficit at ruin, the joint probability function of the surplus immediately before ruin and the deficit at ruin, and the probability function of the claim causing ruin.postprin

Dynamic contrast-enhanced MRI of ocular biotransport in normal and hypertensive eyes

Proceedings of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society Conference, 2008, p. 835-838This study aims to employ in vivo dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) to evaluate the ocular transport following an induction of ocular hypertension in a rat model of chronic glaucoma. Upon systemic administration of Gd-DTPA solution, T1-weighted signal increase was observed in the vitreous body of the glaucomatous eye but not the control eye. This increase occurred earlier in the anterior vitreous body than the preretinal vitreous. Further, there was an earlier Gd-DTPA transport into the anterior chamber in the majority of glaucomatous eyes. Our DCE-MRI findings revealed the leakage of Gd-DTPA at the aqueous-vitreous interface, which was likely resulted from increased permeability of blood-aqueous or aqueous-vitreous barrier. These may explain the sources of changing biochemical compositions in the chamber components, which may implicate the neurodegenerative processes in the glaucomatous visual components. © 2008 IEEE.published_or_final_versio

    Antiferromagnetic spin Seebeck Effect

    Get PDF
We report on the observation of the spin Seebeck effect in antiferromagnetic MnF2_2. A device scale on-chip heater is deposited on a bilayer of Pt (4 nm)/MnF2_2 (110) (30 nm) grown by molecular beam epitaxy on a MgF2_2 (110) substrate. Using Pt as a spin detector layer it is possible to measure thermally generated spin current from MnF2_2 through the inverse spin Hall effect. The low temperature (2 - 80 K) and high magnetic field (up to 140 kOe) regime is explored. A clear spin flop transition corresponding to the sudden rotation of antiferromagnetic spins out of the easy axis is observed in the spin Seebeck signal when large magnetic fields (>9 T) are applied parallel the easy axis of the MnF2_2 thin film. When magnetic field is applied perpendicular to the easy axis, the spin flop transition is absent, as expected

Functional MRI of postnatal visual development in normal rat superior colliculi

Theme: Engineering the Future of BiomedicineThis study employed blood oxygenation level-dependent functional MRI (BOLD-fMRI) to evaluate the visual responses in the superior colliculus of the developing rat brain from the time of eyelid opening to adulthood. Upon flash illumination to the contralateral eye, the regional BOLD response underwent a systematic increase in amplitude with age especially after the third postnatal week. However, no significant difference in BOLD signal increase was found between postnatal days 14 and 21. Our results constitute the first fMRI report in demonstrating the critical period of visual functions in the rat brain during maturation. This can be potentially useful in establishing the links between changes in relation to visual sensory development. ©2009 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 31st Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC 2009), Minneapolis, MN., 3-6 September 2009. Predicting Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) Classification of Drugs by Integrating Chemical-Chemical Interactions and Similarities

    Get PDF
The Anatomical Therapeutic Chemical (ATC) classification system, recommended by the World Health Organization, categories drugs into different classes according to their therapeutic and chemical characteristics. For a set of query compounds, how can we identify which ATC-class (or classes) they belong to? It is an important and challenging problem because the information thus obtained would be quite useful for drug development and utilization. By hybridizing the informations of chemical-chemical interactions and chemical-chemical similarities, a novel method was developed for such purpose. It was observed by the jackknife test on a benchmark dataset of 3,883 drug compounds that the overall success rate achieved by the prediction method was about 73% in identifying the drugs among the following 14 main ATC-classes: (1) alimentary tract and metabolism; (2) blood and blood forming organs; (3) cardiovascular system; (4) dermatologicals; (5) genitourinary system and sex hormones; (6) systemic hormonal preparations, excluding sex hormones and insulins; (7) anti-infectives for systemic use; (8) antineoplastic and immunomodulating agents; (9) musculoskeletal system; (10) nervous system; (11) antiparasitic products, insecticides and repellents; (12) respiratory system; (13) sensory organs; (14) various. Such a success rate is substantially higher than 7% by the random guess. It has not escaped our notice that the current method can be straightforwardly extended to identify the drugs for their 2nd-level, 3rd-level, 4th-level, and 5th-level ATC-classifications once the statistically significant benchmark data are available for these lower levels

In vivo manganese-enhanced MRI and diffusion tensor imaging of developing and impaired visual brains

    Get PDF
This study explored the feasibility of high-resolution Mn-enhanced MRI (MEMRI) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) for in vivo assessments of the development and reorganization of retinal and visual callosal pathways in normal neonatal rodent brains and after early postnatal visual impairments. Using MEMRI, intravitreal Mn 2+ injection into one eye resulted in maximal T1-weighted hyperintensity in neonatal contralateral superior colliculus (SC) 8 hours after administration, whereas in adult contralateral SC signal increase continued at 1 day post-injection. Notably, mild but significant Mn 2+ enhancement was observed in the ipsilateral SC in normal neonatal rats, and in adult rats after neonatal monocular enucleation (ME) but not in normal adult rats. Upon intracortical Mn 2+ injection to the visual cortex, neonatal binocularly-enucleated (BE) rats showed an enhancement of a larger projection area, via the splenium of corpus callosum to the V1/V2 transition zone of the contralateral hemisphere in comparison to normal rats. For DTI, the retinal pathways projected from the enucleated eyes possessed lower fractional anisotropy (FA) 6 weeks after BE and ME. Interestingly, in the optic nerve projected from the remaining eye in ME rats a significantly higher FA was observed compared to normal rats. The results of this study are potentially important for understanding the axonal transport, microstructural reorganization and functional activities in the living visual brain during early postnatal development and plasticity in a global and longitudinal setting. © 2011 IEEE.published_or_final_versionThe 33rd Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBC 2011), Boston, MA., 30 August-3 September 2011.
