Distribution and chemistry of phosphorous in an albaqualf soil after 82 years of phosphate fertilization
The distribution of phosphorus in a fertilized and unfertilized Mexico silt loam soil was measured. After 82 years of phosphorus fertilization the added phosphorus was found in Ap (0-23 cm), smaller amounts in the A and B, and B2 (23-86 cm), and large amounts in the B3 and upper C (86-137 cm) horizons. No added phosphorus was found below 137 cm. The distribution of added phosphorus was similiar to that of the original phosphorus in the soil profile. The phosphorus adsorption capacities of fertilized and unfertilized soils were similar. These data indicated that 82 years of phosphorus fertilization nearly doubled total phosphorus content in the soil but did not change the ability of the soil to adsorb additional phosphorus. Ion products indicated that the phosphorus level in the soil solution was controlled by the solubility of strengite. Apparently those: factors which influence the solubility of strengite will influence the movement of phosphorus in the Mexico silt loam, soil.Project # A-031-M
Bianchi type I space and the stability of inflationary Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space
Stability analysis of the Bianchi type I universe in pure gravity theory is
studied in details. We first derive the non-redundant field equation of the
system by introducing the generalized Bianchi type I metric. This non-redundant
equation reduces to the Friedmann equation in the isotropic limit. It is shown
further that any unstable mode of the isotropic perturbation with respect to a
de Sitter background is also unstable with respect to anisotropic
perturbations. Implications to the choice of physical theories are discussed in
details in this paper.Comment: 5 pages, some comment adde
Friedmann Equation and Stability of Inflationary Higher Derivative Gravity
Stability analysis on the De Sitter universe in pure gravity theory is known
to be useful in many aspects. We first show how to complete the proof of an
earlier argument based on a redundant field equation. It is shown further that
the stability condition applies to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spaces
based on the non-redundant Friedmann equation derived from a simple effective
Lagrangian. We show how to derive this expression for the Friedmann equation of
pure gravity theory. This expression is also generalized to include scalar
field interactions.Comment: Revtex, 6 pages, Add two more references, some typos correcte
Quark Coulomb Interactions and the Mass Difference of Mirror Nuclei
We study the Okamoto-Nolen-Schiffer (ONS) anomaly in the binding energy of
mirror nuclei at high density by adding a single neutron or proton to a quark
gluon plasma. In this high-density limit we find an anomaly equal to two-thirds
of the Coulomb exchange energy of a proton. This effect is dominated by quark
electromagnetic interactions---rather than by the up-down quark mass
difference. At normal density we calculate the Coulomb energy of neutron matter
using a string-flip quark model. We find a nonzero Coulomb energy because of
the neutron's charged constituents. This effect could make a significant
contribution to the ONS anomaly.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figs. sub. to Phys. Rev. Let
Higher moments of nucleon spin structure functions in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory and in a resonance model
The third moment of the twist-3 part of the nucleon spin structure
function is generalized to arbitrary momentum transfer and is
evaluated in heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory (HBChPT) up to order
and in a unitary isobar model (MAID). We show how to link
as well as higher moments of the nucleon spin structure functions
and to nucleon spin polarizabilities. We compare our results with the
most recent experimental data, and find a good description of these available
data within the unitary isobar model. We proceed to extract the twist-4 matrix
element which appears in the suppressed term in the twist
expansion of the spin structure function for proton and neutron.Comment: 30 pages, 7 figure
Chiral effective field theories of the strong interactions
Effective field theories of the strong interactions based on the approximate
chiral symmetry of QCD provide a model-independent approach to low-energy
hadron physics. We give a brief introduction to mesonic and baryonic chiral
perturbation theory and discuss a number of applications. We also consider the
effective field theory including vector and axial-vector mesons.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, proceedings of "Many-Body Structure of Strongly

Real and Virtual Compton Scattering: the nucleon polarisabilities
We give an overview of low-energy Compton scattering (gamma^(*) p --> gamma
p) with a real or virtual incoming photon. These processes allow the
investigation of one of the fundamental properties of the nucleon, i.e. how its
internal structure deforms under an applied static electromagnetic field. Our
knowledge of nucleon polarisabilities and their generalization to non-zero
four-momentum transfer will be reviewed, including the presently ongoing
experiments and future perspectives.Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures. Minireview/Proceedings of "Many-Body Structure

The in-plane paraconductivity in La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 thin film superconductors at high reduced-temperatures: Independence of the normal-state pseudogap
The in-plane resistivity has been measured in (LSxCO)
superconducting thin films of underdoped (), optimally-doped
() and overdoped () compositions. These films were grown
on (100)SrTiO substrates, and have about 150 nm thickness. The in-plane
conductivity induced by superconducting fluctuations above the superconducting
transition (the so-called in-plane paraconductivity, ) was
extracted from these data in the reduced-temperature range
10^{-2}\lsim\epsilon\equiv\ln(T/\Tc)\lsim1. Such a
was then analyzed in terms of the
mean-field--like Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau (GGL) approach extended to the
high- region by means of the introduction of a total-energy cutoff,
which takes into account both the kinetic energy and the quantum localization
energy of each fluctuating mode. Our results strongly suggest that at all
temperatures above Tc, including the high reduced-temperature region, the
doping mainly affects in LSxCO thin films the normal-state properties and that
its influence on the superconducting fluctuations is relatively moderate: Even
in the high- region, the in-plane paraconductivity is found to be
independent of the opening of a pseudogap in the normal state of the underdoped
films.Comment: 35 pages including 10 figures and 1 tabl
Spin structure of the nucleon at low energies
The spin structure of the nucleon is analyzed in the framework of a
Lorentz-invariant formulation of baryon chiral perturbation theory. The
structure functions of doubly virtual Compton scattering are calculated to
one-loop accuracy (fourth order in the chiral expansion). We discuss the
generalization of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn sum rule, the Burkhardt-Cottingham
sum rule and moments of these. We give predictions for the forward and the
longitudinal-transverse spin polarizabilities of the proton and the neutron at
zero and finite photon virtuality. A detailed comparison to results obtained in
heavy baryon chiral perturbation theory is also given.Comment: 29 pp, 14 fig
A quark model analysis of the charge symmetry breaking in nuclear force
In order to investigate the charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in the short range
part of the nuclear force, we calculate the difference of the masses of the
neutron and the proton, , the difference of the scattering
lengths of the p-p and n-n scatterings, , and the difference of the
analyzing power of the proton and the neutron in the n-p scattering, , by a quark model. In the present model the sources of CSB are the
mass difference of the up and down quarks and the electromagnetic interaction.
We investigate how much each of them contributes to , and . It is found that the contribution of CSB of the
short range part in the nuclear force is large enough to explain the observed
, while is rather underestimated.Comment: 26 pages,6 figure
