Intermolecular C–H Bond Activation of Alkanes and Arenes by NCN Pincer Iridium(III) Acetate Complexes Containing Bis(oxazolinyl)phenyl Ligands

Carbon–hydrogen bond activation of arenes by the pincer Ir(III) acetate complex (phebox)Ir(OAc)2(H2O) (<b>1</b>; phebox = bis(oxazolinyl)phenyl) proceeded at 100 °C to give the corresponding aryl Ir(III) complexes (phebox)Ir(Ar)(OAc) in high yields. Reactions of the monosubstituted arenes anisole, toluene, chlorobenzene, acetophenone, and nitrobenzene resulted in the formation of meta- and para-substituted aryl complexes in high yields. Competitive experiments between two monosubstituted arenes exhibited relative reaction rates in the order C6H5OMe > C6H5NO2 > C6H5COMe > C6H5Cl > C6H5Me. The kinetic isotope effects of C–H bond activation of benzene and nitrobenzene were determined to be 2.9 ± 0.1 and 2.0 ± 0.4, respectively. The Ir complex <b>1</b> underwent catalytic borylation of arenes with bis(pinacolato)diboron (B2(pin)2) or pinacolborane (HB(pin)), giving the corresponding borylated products. The Ir complex <b>1</b> was also reactive toward alkane C–H bond activation, demonstrated by the reactions with <i>n</i>-heptane and <i>n</i>-octane at 160 °C that cleanly afforded the corresponding alkyl complexes (phebox)Ir(<i>n</i>-C<i>n</i>H2<i>n</i>+1)(OAc) (<i>n</i> = 7, 8, respectively)

[Abstract]We report an acute type A dissection case with refractory idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP). A 72-year-old woman treated as ITP patient, whose platelet count was decreased to 2,000/mm3, was transfered to our institute, due to the acute Stanford A aortic dissection complicated with pericardial effusion. She was treated with high-dose Îł-globulin therapy (HDGT) and platelet transfusion immediately after admission under pulse steroid therapy. Her platelet count was recovered to 47,000/mm3 36 hours after the onset of acute dissection while maintaining lower systemic blood pressure. Then, we decided to per-form ascending aortic replacement. HDGT and platelet transfusion were continued during the operation. The replacement was completed with-out hemostatic problems, maintaining the plate-let count at >50,000/mm3. HDGT and platelet transfusion should be started as soon as possible after the urgency of the operation of ITP patients become apparent. The operation must be per-formed promptly without hesitation

A Case with Leiomyoma of the Jejunum

Leiomyoma of the small intestine is a rare lesion, and most cases are found during operation and during autopsy. This patiant who we reported had a history of melena. Oval filling defect was detected in the jejunum by means of conventional barium examination. The histologic type of this neoplasm could be suggested by its radiologic findings and probed by operation

Three Early Gastric Cancers of Superficial Depressive Type on the Greater Curvature

With advance in the double irridigoradiographic technique the detection of early gastric cancer has markedly increased. However, early gastric cancer of superficial depressive type on the greater curvature, because of the difficulty in its discovery due to the specificity of its site and its low incidence, seems to be relatively rare. In spite of this rarity, recently we encountered superficial depressive cancers at the corpus, the angulus and the antrum one each at respective site, about which we reported with some comments on each

Study on Factors of Body Image in Japanese and Vietnamese Adolescents

Over-concern about thinness, especially among young girls including adolescents, is common in Japan. Behind the problem, there is a complicated social phenomenon and an effective strategy is not known yet. In this study, we tried to find a clue by comparing body image between two countries which have different social backgrounds. Subjects were Japanese and Vietnamese junior high school students from 12 to 15y old. Three schools each and 1-2 classes from each grade were randomly selected to involve 374 (boys 196, girls 178) and 714 (boys 352, girls 362), respectively, in Japan and Vietnam. Height and weight of subjects were measured and their satisfaction about their body shape and experience with dieting were asked by a questionnaire. Questions about their body image concerning their desire, liking of the opposite sex, own liking and health were answered by marking silhouettes. About 60% of Japanese thought that obese (silhouette 9) is unhealthy, while about 85% of Vietnamese thought that thinness (silhouette 1) is unhealthy. Most of the Japanese girls overestimated their body weight and were dissatisfied with th eir body shape and 78.3% wanted to lose weight. About 30% of them experienced weight loss including 2.8% of the low BMI students. Vietnamese girls also had similar tendencies in their desire about their body image as the Japanese but they were less serious. The girls in both countries preferred the thinner body image to the healthy body image and thought that boys liked the thinner body image. Japanese boys were mostly satisfied with their body shape; however, about half (46%) of the Vietnamese boys wanted a bigger and more muscular body image. In conclusion, the biggest problem with body image was the over-concern about thinness of the Japanese girls, which was based on their own misconception. Therefore, as the strategy to correct their body image, education about good health and also information about the boys' favorite body image are recommended
