Towards hydrodynamics without an entropy current
We present a generating functional which describes the equilibrium
thermodynamic response of a relativistic system to external sources. A
variational principle gives rise to constraints on the response parameters of
relativistic hydrodynamics without making use of an entropy current. Our method
reproduces and extends results available in the literature. It also provides a
technique for efficiently computing n-point zero-frequency hydrodynamic
correlation functions without the need to solve the equations of hydrodynamics.Comment: 4+epsilon pages, v2: comments and references adde
Griffiths phase in diluted magnetic semiconductors
We study the effects of disorder in the vicinity of the ferromagnetic
transition in a diluted magnetic semiconductor in the strongly localized
regime. We derive an effective polaron Hamiltonian, which leads to the
Griffiths phase above the ferromagnetic transition point. The Griffiths-McCoy
effects yield non-perturbative contributions to the dynamic susceptibility. We
explicitly derive the long-time susceptibility, which has a pseudo-scaling
form, with the dynamic critical exponent being expressed through the
percolation indices.Comment: 4 pages, final version as publishe
Evidence for competition between the superconducting and the pseudogap state in (BiPb)_2(SrLa)_2CuO_{6+\delta} from muon-spin rotation experiments
The in-plane magnetic penetration depth \lambda_{ab} in optimally doped
(BiPb)_2(SrLa)_2CuO_{6+\delta} (OP Bi2201) was studied by means of muon-spin
rotation. The measurements of \lambda_{ab}^{-2}(T) are inconsistent with a
simple model of a d-wave order parameter and a uniform quasiparticle weight
around the Fermi surface. The data are well described assuming the angular gap
symmetry obtained in ARPES experiments [Phys. Rev. Lett {\bf 98}, 267004
(2007)], where it was shown that the superconducting gap in OP Bi2201 exists
only in segments of the Fermi surface near the nodes. We find that the
remaining parts of the Fermi surface, which are strongly affected by the
pseudogap state, do not contribute significantly to the superconducting
condensate. Our data provide evidence that high temperature superconductivity
and pseudogap behavior in cuprates are competing phenomena.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
GEM-AQ/EC, an on-line global multi-scale chemical weather modelling system: model development and evaluation of global aerosol climatology
A global air quality modeling system GEM-AQ/EC was developed by implementing tropospheric chemistry and aerosol processes on-line into the Global Environmental Multiscale weather prediction model â GEM. Due to the multi-scale features of the GEM, the integrated model, GEM-AQ/EC, is able to investigate chemical weather at scales from global to urban domains. The current chemical mechanism is comprised of 50 gas-phase species, 116 chemical and 19 photolysis reactions, and is complemented by a sectional aerosol module CAM (The Canadian Aerosol Module) with 5 aerosols types: sulphate, black carbon, organic carbon, sea-salt and soil dust. Monthly emission inventories of black carbon and organic carbon from boreal and temperate vegetation fires were assembled using the most reliable areas burned datasets by countries, from statistical databases and derived from remote sensing products of 1995â2004. The model was run for ten years from from 1995â2004 with re-analyzed meteorology on a global uniform 1° × 1° horizontal resolution domain and 28 hybrid levels extending up to 10 hPa. The simulating results were compared with various observations including surface network around the globe and satellite data. Regional features of global aerosols are reasonably captured including emission, surface concentrations and aerosol optical depth. For various types of aerosols, satisfactory correlations were achieved between modeled and observed with some degree of systematic bias possibly due to large uncertainties in the emissions used in this study. A global distribution of natural aerosol contributions to the total aerosols is obtained and compared with observations
On knottings in the physical Hilbert space of LQG as given by the EPRL model
We consider the EPRL spin foam amplitude for arbitrary embedded
two-complexes. Choosing a definition of the face- and edge amplitudes which
lead to spin foam amplitudes invariant under trivial subdivisions, we
investigate invariance properties of the amplitude under consistent
deformations, which are deformations of the embedded two-complex where faces
are allowed to pass through each other in a controlled way. Using this
surprising invariance, we are able to show that in the physical Hilbert space
as defined by the sum over all spin foams contains no knotting classes of
graphs anymore.Comment: 22 pages, 14 figure
The effect of lysolecithin on prostanoid and platelet-activating factor formation by human gall-bladder mucosal cells
It has been demonstrated that lysolecithin (lysophosphatidyl choline, LPC) produces experimental cholecystitis in cats mediated by arachidonic acid metabolites. LPC is a cytolytic agent that has been postulated as a contributing factor in the development of cholecystitis in humans. The purpose of this research was to evaluate the effect of LPC on human gall-bladder mucosal cell phospholipase A2 and cyclooxygenase activity. Gall-bladder mucosal cells were isolated from the gall-bladders of patients undergoing routine cholecystectomy. Fresh, isolated cells were maintained in tissue culture and stimulated with varying doses of LPC. Platelet-activating factor concentration was quantitated as an index of phospholipase A2 activity and prostanoids were measured as an index of cyclooxygenase activity. Also, the effect of LPC on cyclooxygenase 1 and 2 expression in microsomal protein was evaluated. LPC caused dose related increases in 6-keto-PGF1α and PAF produced by human gall-bladder mucosal cells. Exposure of human gall-bladder mucosal cells to LPC failed to elicit expression of constitutive cyclooxygenase-1, while the expression of inducible cyclooxygenase-2 was increased. The results of this study indicate that LPC induces the formation of prostanoids and PAF by human gall-bladder mucosal cells, suggesting that this substance may promote the development of gall-bladder inflammation
A unified radio control architecture for prototyping adaptive wireless protocols
Experimental optimization of wireless protocols and validation of novel solutions is often problematic, due to limited configuration space present in commercial wireless interfaces as well as complexity of monolithic driver implementation on SDR-based experimentation platforms. To overcome these limitations a novel software architecture is proposed, called WiSHFUL, devised to allow: i) maximal exploitation of radio functionalities available in current radio chips, and ii) clean separation between the logic for optimizing the radio protocols (i.e. radio control) and the definition of these protocols
Zero-field superfluid density in d-wave superconductor evaluated from the results of muon-spin-rotation experiments in the mixed state
We report on measurements of the in-plane magnetic penetration \lambda_{ab}
in the optimally doped cuprate superconductor (BiPb)_2(SrLa)_2CuO_6+\delta (OP
Bi2201) by means of muon-spin rotation (\muSR). We show that in unconventional
wave superconductors (like OP Bi2201), \muSR experiments conducted in
various magnetic fields allow to evaluate the zero-field magnetic penetration
depth \lambda_0, which relates to the zero-field superfluid density in terms of
\rho_s\propto\lambda_0^-2.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
