    Contesting the Dominant Discourse of Child Sexual Abuse: Sexual Subjects, Agency, and Ethics

    Responding to previous scholars’ call to explore the complexities of child sexual abuse (CSA), this article presents narratives of CSA and scrutinizes a binary construction underpinning this discourse of CSA, namely, the positioning of children as powerless and adults as powerful. The narratives belong to three Indonesian young people who have had sexual interactions with adults when they were children. The findings demonstrate how this binary positioning has been both drawn upon and resisted in the ways participants understand their sexual experiences. This article contributes to the existing literature by providing analyses of some vignettes of everyday experiences of how children might be constituted as sexual subjects, including their capability to exercise agency, perform resistance, and negotiate ethics. The implications of the findings are discussed in relation to how the recognition of children as sexual subjects and their sexual agency might be beneficial for parents, educators, and counselors

    Arboviral Etiologies of Acute Febrile Illnesses in Western South America, 2000–2007

    Over recent decades, the variety and quantity of diseases caused by viruses transmitted to humans by mosquitoes and other arthropods (also known as arboviruses) have increased around the world. One difficulty in studying these diseases is the fact that the symptoms are often non-descript, with patients reporting such symptoms as low-grade fever and headache. Our goal in this study was to use laboratory tests to determine the causes of such non-descript illnesses in sites in four countries in South America, focusing on arboviruses. We established a surveillance network in 13 locations in Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Paraguay, where patient samples were collected and then sent to a central laboratory for testing. Between May 2000 and December 2007, blood serum samples were collected from more than 20,000 participants with fever, and recent arbovirus infection was detected for nearly one third of them. The most common viruses were dengue viruses (genera Flavivirus). We also detected infection by viruses from other genera, including Alphavirus and Orthobunyavirus. This data is important for understanding how such viruses might emerge as significant human pathogens

    A qualitative investigation of lived experiences of long-term health condition management with people who are food insecure.

    Background: As more people are living with one or more chronic health conditions, supporting patients to become activated, self-managers of their conditions has become a key health policy focus both in the UK and internationally. There is also growing evidence in the UK that those with long term health conditions have an increased risk of being food insecure. While international evidence indicates that food insecurity adversely affects individual's health condition management capability, little is known about how those so affected manage their condition(s) in this context. An investigation of lived experience of health condition management was undertaken with food insecure people living in north east Scotland. The study aimed to explore the challenges facing food insecure people in terms of, i. their self-care condition management practices, and ii. disclosing and discussing the experience of managing their condition with a health care professional, and iii. Notions of the support they might wish to receive from them. Methods: Twenty in-depth interviews were conducted with individuals attending a food bank and food pantry in north east Scotland. Interview audio recordings were fully transcribed and thematically analysed. Results: Individuals reporting multiple physical and mental health conditions, took part in the study. Four main themes were identified i.e.: 1. food practices, trade-offs and compromises, that relate to economic constraints and lack of choice; 2. illness experiences and food as they relate to physical and mental ill-health; 3. (in) visibility of participants' economic vulnerability within health care consultations; and 4. perceptions and expectations of the health care system. Conclusions: This study, the first of its kind in the UK, indicated that participants' health condition management aspirations were undermined by the experience of food insecurity, and that their health care consultations in were, on the whole, devoid of discussions of those challenges. As such, the study indicated practical and ethical implications for health care policy, practice and research associated with the risk of intervention-generated health inequalities that were suggested by this study. Better understanding is needed about the impact of household food insecurity on existing ill health, wellbeing and health care use across the UK

    Social anxiety symptoms in young children:Investigating the interplay of theory of mind and expressions of shyness

    Children’s early onset of social anxiety may be associated with their social understanding, and their ability to express emotions adaptively. We examined whether social anxiety in 48-month-old children (N = 110; 54 boys) was related to: a) a lower level of theory of mind (ToM); b) a lower proclivity to express shyness in a positive way (adaptive); and c) a higher tendency to express shyness in a negative way (non-adaptive). In addition, we investigated to what extent children’s level of social anxiety was predicted by the interaction between ToM and expressions of shyness. Children’s positive and negative expressions of shyness were observed during a performance task. ToM was measured with a validated battery, and social anxiety was assessed using both parents’ reports on questionnaires. Socially anxious children had a lower level of ToM, and displayed more negative and less positive shy expressions. However, children with a lower level of ToM who expressed more positive shyness were less socially anxious. Additional results show that children who displayed shyness only in a negative manner were more socially anxious than children who expressed shyness only in a positive way and children who did not display any shyness. Moreover, children who displayed both positive and negative expressions of shyness were more socially anxious than children who displayed shyness only in a positive way. These findings highlight the importance of ToM development and socio-emotional strategies, and their interaction, on the early development of social anxiety

    Smooth muscle Ca(2+) -activated and voltage-gated K+ channels modulate conducted dilation in rat isolated small mesenteric arteries.

    OBJECTIVE:   To assess the influence of blocking smooth muscle large conductance Ca(2+) -activated K+ channels and voltage-gated K+ channels on the conducted dilation to ACh and isoproterenol. MATERIALS AND METHODS:   Rat mesenteric arteries were isolated with a bifurcation, triple-cannulated, pressurized and imaged using confocal microscopy. Phenylephrine was added to the superfusate to generate tone, and agonists perfused into a sidebranch to evoke local dilation and subsequent conducted dilation into the feed artery. RESULTS:   Both ACh- and isoproterenol-stimulated local and conducted dilation with similar magnitudes of decay with distance along the feed artery (2000μm: ∼15% maximum dilation). The gap junction uncoupler carbenoxolone prevented both conducted dilation and intercellular spread of dye through gap junctions. IbTx, TEA or 4-AP, blockers of large conductance Ca(2+) -activated K+ channels and voltage-gated K+ channels, did not affect conducted dilation to either agonist. A combination of either IbTx or TEA with 4-AP markedly improved the extent of conducted dilation to both agonists (2000μm: >50% maximum dilation). The enhanced conducted dilation was reflected in the hyperpolarization to ACh (2000μm: Control, 4±1 mV, n = 3; TEA with 4-AP, 14±3mV, n=4), and was dependent on the endothelium. CONCLUSIONS:   These data show that activated BK(Ca) and K(V) -channels serve to reduce the effectiveness of conducted dilation

    A novel role for HNO in local and spreading vasodilatation in rat mesenteric resistance arteries.

    Nitric oxide-mediated vasodilatation has previously been attributed to the uncharged form of the molecule (NO(•)), but increasing evidence suggests that nitroxyl (HNO) may play a significant role in endothelium-dependent relaxation. The aim of this study was to investigate the mechanisms underlying HNO-mediated vasodilatation in phenylephrine pre-constricted pressurized (70 mmHg) mesenteric arteries, and on membrane currents in isolated smooth muscle cells using whole cell and perforated patch clamp recordings. Angeli's salt (AS: nitroxyl donor), evoked concentration-dependent vasodilatation that was insensitive to the NO(•) scavengers carboxy-PTIO and hydroxocobalamin (HXC), but sensitive to either the HNO scavenger L-cysteine, K-channel blockers (4-AP and iberiotoxin), raised [K(+)](o), or inhibition of soluble guanylyl cyclase (ODQ). AS-evoked smooth muscle hyperpolarization significantly augmented K(V) current in an ODQ sensitive manner, and also increased the BK(Ca) current. Importantly, 30 μM AS initiated conducted or spreading vasodilatation, and following blockade of endothelial K-channels (TRAM-34 and apamin), ACh was able to evoke similar L-cysteine-sensitive conducted dilatation. These data show that vasodilatation induced by HNO is mediated by both K(V) and BK(Ca) channels, and suggest a physiological role in vasodilatation through the vasculature

    The simple view of second language reading throughout the primary grades

    Contains fulltext : 103028.pdf (publisher's version ) (Open Access)In the Simple View of Reading proposed by Hoover and Gough (1990), reading comprehension is conceived as the product of word decoding and listening comprehension. It is claimed that listening comprehension or the linguistic processes involved in the comprehension of oral language strongly constrain the process of reading comprehension. In several studies, evidence for this theoretical framework has been provided for first language learners. In the present study, an attempt was made to find empirical evidence for the same view underlying second language reading. Therefore, the word decoding and listening comprehension skills of samples of 1,293 first language (L1) learners and 394 second language (L2) learners of Dutch were related to their reading comprehension abilities throughout the primary grades. It was found that the levels of word decoding were more or less equal in the two groups of learners, whereas the L2 learners stayed behind their first L1 peers in both listening, and reading comprehension. The relationships between word decoding, listening comprehension and reading comprehension turned out to be highly comparable. A longitudinal analysis of data showed the Simple View of Reading to be equally valid for L1 and L2 learners. With progression of grade, the impact of word decoding on reading comprehension decreased, whereas the impact of listening comprehension showed an increase to the same extent in the two groups of learners. However, the reciprocity of the relationship between listening comprehension and reading comprehension tended to be less prominent in the group of L2 learners
