Holographic three-point functions of semiclassical states

    Get PDF
We calculate the holographic three-point functions in N = 4 super-Yang-Mills theory in the case when two of the operators are semiclassical and one is dual to a supergravity mode. We further discuss the transition to the regime when all three operators are semiclassical.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figures; v2: refs. added, discussion in sec. 2.1 expanded; v3: misprint in (2.28) corrected, published versio

Phases of planar 5-dimensional supersymmetric Chern-Simons theory

In this paper we investigate the large-NN behavior of 5-dimensional N=1\mathcal{N}=1 super Yang-Mills with a level kk Chern-Simons term and an adjoint hypermultiplet. As in three-dimensional Chern-Simons theories, one must choose an integration contour to completely define the theory. Using localization, we reduce the path integral to a matrix model with a cubic action and compute its free energy in various scenarios. In the limit of infinite Yang-Mills coupling and for particular choices of the contours, we find that the free-energy scales as N5/2N^{5/2} for U(N)U(N) gauge groups with large values of the Chern-Simons 't\,Hooft coupling, λ~N/k\tilde\lambda\equiv N/k. If we also set the hypermultiplet mass to zero, then this limit is a superconformal fixed point and the N5/2N^{5/2} behavior parallels other fixed points which have known supergravity duals. We also demonstrate that SU(N)SU(N) gauge groups cannot have this N5/2N^{5/2} scaling for their free-energy. At finite Yang-Mills coupling we establish the existence of a third order phase transition where the theory crosses over from the Yang-Mills phase to the Chern-Simons phase. The phase transition exists for any value of λ~\tilde\lambda, although the details differ between small and large values of λ~\tilde\lambda. For pure Chern-Simons theories we present evidence for a chain of phase transitions as λ~\tilde\lambda is increased. We also find the expectation values for supersymmetric circular Wilson loops in these various scenarios and show that the Chern-Simons term leads to different physical properties for fundamental and anti-fundamental Wilson loops. Different choices of the integration contours also lead to different properties for the loops.Comment: 40 pages, 17 figures, Minor corrections, Published versio

Lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the vulva, an underrecognized entity? Case report with a single inguinal micrometastasis detected by sentinel node technique

    Get PDF
This report describes an unusual EBV-negative lymphoepithelioma-like carcinoma of the vulva in a 73-year-old patient. The lesion was localised at the right minor labium and was resected by partial vulvectomy. A synchronous sentinel lymph node biopsy revealed a single micrometastasis in the right inguinal region, which prompted local radiotherapy. Follow-up nine months later showed only slight vulvar atrophy, without signs of local recurrence or distant metastases

Time-course analysis of the Shewanella amazonensis SB2B proteome in response to sodium chloride shock

Shewanellae are microbial models for environmental stress response; however, the sequential expression of mechanisms in response to stress is poorly understood. Here we experimentally determine the response mechanisms of Shewanella amazonensis SB2B during sodium chloride stress using a novel liquid chromatography and accurate mass-time tag mass spectrometry time-course proteomics approach. The response of SB2B involves an orchestrated sequence of events comprising increased signal transduction associated with motility and restricted growth. Following a metabolic shift to branched chain amino acid degradation, motility and cellular replication proteins return to pre-perturbed levels. Although sodium chloride stress is associated with a change in the membrane fatty acid composition in other organisms, this is not the case for SB2B as fatty acid degradation pathways are not expressed and no change in the fatty acid profile is observed. These findings suggest that shifts in membrane composition may be an indirect physiological response to high NaCl stress

    Asymptotic safety guaranteed

We study the ultraviolet behaviour of four-dimensional quantum field theories involving non-abelian gauge fields, fermions and scalars in the Veneziano limit. In a regime where asymptotic freedom is lost, we explain how the three types of fields cooperate to develop fully interacting ultraviolet fixed points, strictly controlled by perturbation theory. Extensions towards strong coupling and beyond the large-N limit are discussed

Divalent Metal Ions Tune the Self-Splicing Reaction of the Yeast Mitochondrial Group II Intron Sc.ai5γ

Group II introns are large ribozymes, consisting of six functionally distinct domains that assemble in the presence of Mg2+ to the active structure catalyzing a variety of reactions. The first step of intron splicing is well characterized by a Michaelis–Menten-type cleavage reaction using a two-piece group II intron: the substrate RNA, the 5′-exon covalently linked to domains 1, 2, and 3, is cleaved upon addition of domain 5 acting as a catalyst. Here we investigate the effect of Ca2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Pb2+, and [Co(NH3)6]3+ on the first step of splicing of the Saccharomyces cerevisiae mitochondrial group II intron Sc.ai5γ. We find that this group II intron is very sensitive to the presence of divalent metal ions other than Mg2+. For example, the presence of only 5% Ca2+ relative to Mg2+ results in a decrease in the maximal turnover rate k cat by 50%. Ca2+ thereby has a twofold effect: this metal ion interferes initially with folding, but then also competes directly with Mg2+ in the folded state, the latter being indicative of at least one specific Ca2+ binding pocket interfering directly with catalysis. Similar results are obtained with Mn2+, Cd2+, and [Co(NH3)6]3+. Ni2+ is a much more powerful inhibitor and the presence of either Zn2+ or Pb2+ leads to rapid degradation of the RNA. These results show a surprising sensitivity of such a large multidomain RNA on trace amounts of cations other than Mg2+ and raises the question of biological relevance at least in the case of Ca2+
