Problems in the classic frequency shift islanding detection methods applied to energy storage converters and a coping strategy
This paper first derives a usable formula based on the parallel R, L, C load and the conclusions from frequency shift islanding detection methods in current literature: the angle by which the total output current of the distributed resources (DR) units leads the point of common coupling (PCC) voltage must be conducted to have the same shifting direction as the load admittance angle during the variation of the frequency. On the basis of the formula and multi-DR operation, the scenarios in which the classic frequency shift methods are applied to energy storage converters are analyzed. The results indicate that the setting of the angle by which the energy storage converter current leads the PCC voltage may need to be modified when running state changes. It results in the problems that the classic methods are not applicable for non-UPF (unity power factor) control and have to distinguish between generation mode and consumption mode for UPF control. On account of the problems, a coping strategy, i.e. an improved method, is proposed. The analyses indicate that the improved method is applicable in every state. The last simulations and experiments confirm the preceding conclusions
An irregular current injection islanding detection method based on an improved impedance measurement scheme
One class of islanding detection methods, known as impedance measurement-based methods and voltage change monitoring-based methods, are implemented through injecting irregular currents into the network, for which reason they are defined in this paper as irregular current injection methods. This paper indicates that such methods may be affected by distributed generation (DG) unit cut-in events. Although the network impedance change can still be used as a judgment basis for islanding detection, the general impedance measurement scheme cannot separate island events from DG unit cut-in events in multi-DG operation. In view of this, this paper proposes a new islanding detection method based on an improved impedance measurement scheme, i.e., dynamic impedance measurement, which will not be affected by DG unit cut-in events and can further assist some other equipment in islanding detection. The simulations and experiments verify the stated advantages of the new islanding detection method

Transcribing Latin Manuscripts in Respect to Linguistics
Current text detection software, although can transcribe modern languages with high accuracy, has flaws detecting texts and transcribing original Latin manuscripts sufficiently. This paper proposes a general approach for transcribing Latin manuscripts in respect to linguistics and develops a system to transcribe Latin manuscripts containing intricate abbreviations, which combines basic object detection algorithms with linguistics. We used methods from image processing and made changes based on the characteristics of Latin. This item from the UA Faculty Publications collection is made available by the University of Arizona with support from the University of Arizona Libraries. Compact graphene mode-locked wavelength-tunable erbium-doped fiber lasers: from all anomalous dispersion towards all normal dispersion
Soliton operation and soliton wavelength tuning of erbium-doped fiber lasers
mode locked with atomic layer graphene was experimentally investigated under
various cavity dispersion conditions. It was shown that not only wide range
soliton wavelength tuning but also soltion pulse width variation could be
obtained in the fiber lasers. Our results show that the graphene mode locked
erbium-doped fiber lasers provide a compact, user friendly and low cost
wavelength tunable ultrahsort pulse source
Explosive events - swirling transition region jets
In this paper, we extend our earlier work to provide additional evidence for
an alternative scenario to explain the nature of so-called `explosive events'.
The bi-directed, fast Doppler motion of explosive events observed
spectroscopically in the transition region emission is classically interpreted
as a pair of bidirectional jets moving upward and downward from a reconnection
site. We discuss the problems of such a model. In our previous work, we focused
basically on the discrepancy of fast Doppler motion without detectable motion
in the image plane. We now suggest an alternative scenario for the explosive
events, based on our observations of spectral line tilts and bifurcated
structure in some events. Both features are indicative of rotational motion in
narrow structures. We explain the bifurcation as the result of rotation of
hollow cylindrical structures and demonstrate that such a sheath model can also
be applied to explain the nature of the puzzling `explosive events'. We find
that the spectral tilt, the lack of apparent motion, the bifurcation, and a
rapidly growing number of direct observations support an alternative scenario
of linear, spicular-sized jets with a strong spinning motion.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Solar Physic
New supersymmetric solutions of N=2, D=5 gauged supergravity with hyperscalars
We construct new supersymmetric solutions, including AdS bubbles, in an N=2
truncation of five-dimensional N=8 gauged supergravity. This particular
truncation is given by N=2 gauged supergravity coupled to two vector multiples
and three incomplete hypermultiplets, and was originally investigated in the
context of obtaining regular AdS bubble geometries with multiple active
R-charges. We focus on cohomogeneity-one solutions corresponding to objects
with two equal angular momenta and up to three independent R-charges.
Curiously, we find a new set of zero and negative mass solitons asymptotic to
AdS_5/Z_k, for k \ge 3, which are everywhere regular without closed timelike
curves.Comment: Latex 3 times, 42 page
Resonant Generation of Topological Modes in Trapped Bose Gases
Trapped Bose atoms cooled down to temperatures below the Bose-Einstein
condensation temperature are considered. Stationary solutions to the
Gross-Pitaevskii equation (GPE) define the topological coherent modes,
representing nonground-state Bose-Einstein condensates. These modes can be
generated by means of alternating fields whose frequencies are in resonance
with the transition frequencies between two collective energy levels
corresponding to two different topological modes. The theory of resonant
generation of these modes is generalized in several aspects: Multiple-mode
formation is described; a shape-conservation criterion is derived, imposing
restrictions on the admissible spatial dependence of resonant fields; evolution
equations for the case of three coherent modes are investigated; the complete
stability analysis is accomplished; the effects of harmonic generation and
parametric conversion for the topological coherent modes are predicted. All
considerations are realized both by employing approximate analytical methods as
well as by numerically solving the GPE. Numerical solutions confirm all
conclusions following from analytical methods.Comment: One reference modifie
Effects of Al doping on the structural and electronic properties of Mg(1-x)Al(x)B2
We have studied the structural and electronic properties of Mg(1-x)Al(x)B2
within the Virtual Crystal Approximation (VCA) by means of first-principles
total-energy calculations. Results for the lattice parameters, the electronic
band structure, and the Fermi surface as a function of Al doping for 0<x<0.6
are presented. The ab initio VCA calculations are in excellent agreement with
the experimentally observed change in the lattice parameters of Al doped MgB2.
The calculations show that the Fermi surface associated with holes a the boron
planes collapses gradually with aluminum doping and vanishes for x=0.56. In
addition, an abrupt topological change in the sigma-band Fermi surface was
found for x=0.3. The calculated hole density correlates closely with existing
experimental data for Tc(x), indicating that the observed loss of
superconductivity in Mg(1-x)Al(x)B2 is a result of hole bands filling.Comment: 4 pages (revtex) and 4 figures (postscript
