Room temperature ferromagnetism in chemically synthesized ZnO rods
We report structural and magnetic properties of pure ZnO rods using X-ray
diffraction (XRD), magnetization hysteresis (M-H) loop and near edge x-ray fine
structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) study at O K edge. Sample of ZnO was prepared
by co-precipitation method. XRD and selective area electron diffraction
measurements infer that ZnO rods exhibit a single phase polycrystalline nature
with wurtzite lattice. Field emission transmission electron microscopy, field
emission scanning electron microscopy micrographs infers that ZnO have rod type
microstructures with dimension 200 nm in diameter and 550 nm in length. M-H
loop studies performed at room temperature display room temperature
ferromagnetism in ZnO rods. NEXAFS study reflects absence of the oxygen
vacancies in pure ZnO rods.Comment: 8 Pages, 3 Figure
sob a dinâmica econômica e social do país. A realização deste estudo
contribui para o debate sobre as estratégias de política fi scal que vêm
sendo adotadas e o impacto de priorização de determinados gastos,

Grooming of Dynamic Traffic in WDM Star and Tree Networks Using Genetic Algorithm
The advances in WDM technology lead to the great interest in traffic grooming
problems. As traffic often changes from time to time, the problem of grooming
dynamic traffic is of great practical value. In this paper, we discuss dynamic
grooming of traffic in star and tree networks. A genetic algorithm (GA) based
approach is proposed to support arbitrary dynamic traffic patterns, which
minimizes the number of ADM's and wavelengths. To evaluate the algorithm,
tighter bounds are derived. Computer simulation results show that our algorithm
is efficient in reducing both the numbers of ADM's and wavelengths in tree and
star networks.Comment: 15 page
The influence of nonlinearities on the symmetric hydrodynamic response of a 10,000 TEU Container ship
The prediction of wave-induced motions and loads is of great importance for the design of marine structures. Linear potential flow hydrodynamic models are already used in different parts of the ship design development and appraisal process. However, the industry demands for design innovation and the possibilities offered by modern technology imply the need to also understand the modelling assumptions and associated influences of nonlinear hydrodynamic actions on ship response. At first instance, this paper presents the taxonomy of different Fluid Structure Interaction (FSI) methods that may be used for the assessment of ship motions and loads. Consequently, it documents in a practical way the effects of weakly nonlinear hydrodynamics on the symmetric wave-induced responses for a 10,000TEU Container ship. It is shown that the weakly nonlinear FSI models may be useful for the prediction of symmetric wave-induced loads and responses of such ship not only in way of amidships but also at the extremities of the hull. It is concluded that validation of hydrodynamic radiation and diffraction forces and their respective influence on ship response should be especially considered for those cases where the variations of the hull wetted surface in time may be noticeable
Phase synchronization and noise-induced resonance in systems of coupled oscillators
We study synchronization and noise-induced resonance phenomena in systems of
globally coupled oscillators, each possessing finite inertia. The behavior of
the order parameter, which measures collective synchronization of the system,
is investigated as the noise level and the coupling strength are varied, and
hysteretic behavior is manifested. The power spectrum of the phase velocity is
also examined and the quality factor as well as the response function is
obtained to reveal noise-induced resonance behavior.Comment: to be published in Phys. Rev.
Synchronization and resonance in a driven system of coupled oscillators
We study the noise effects in a driven system of globally coupled
oscillators, with particular attention to the interplay between driving and
noise. The self-consistency equation for the order parameter, which measures
the collective synchronization of the system, is derived; it is found that the
total order parameter decreases monotonically with noise, indicating overall
suppression of synchronization. Still, for large coupling strengths, there
exists an optimal noise level at which the periodic (ac) component of the order
parameter reaches its maximum. The response of the phase velocity is also
examined and found to display resonance behavior.Comment: 17 pages, 3 figure
Treating colorectal peritoneal metastases with an injectable cytostatic loaded supramolecular hydrogel in a rodent animal model
Patients with peritoneal metastases (PM) of colorectal cancer have a very poor outcome. Intraperitoneal delivery of chemotherapy is the preferred route for PM treatment. The main limitation of the treatment options is the short residence time of the cytostatic, with subsequent short exposure of the cancer cells. To address this, a supramolecular hydrogel has been developed that allows both local and slow release of its encapsulated drug, mitomycin C (MMC) or cholesterol-conjugated MMC (cMMC), respectively. This experimental study investigates if drug delivery using this hydrogel improves the therapeutic efficacy against PM. PM was induced in WAG/Rij rats (n = 72) by intraperitoneally injecting syngeneic colon carcinoma cells (CC531) expressing luciferase. After seven days, animals received a single intraperitoneal injection with saline (n = 8), unloaded hydrogel (n = 12), free MMC (n = 13), free cMMC (n = 13), MMC-loaded hydrogel (n = 13), or cMMC-loaded hydrogel (n = 13). Primary outcome was overall survival with a maximum follow-up of 120 days. Intraperitoneal tumor development was non-invasive monitored via bioluminescence imaging. Sixty-one rats successfully underwent all study procedures and were included to assess therapeutic efficacy. After 120 days, the overall survival in the MMC-loaded hydrogel and free MMC group was 78% and 38%, respectively. A trend toward significance was found when comparing the survival curves of the MMC-loaded hydrogel and free MMC (p = 0.087). No survival benefit was found for the cMMC-loaded hydrogel compared to free cMMC. Treating PM with our MMC-loaded hydrogel, exhibiting prolonged MMC exposure, seems effective in improving survival compared to treatment with free MMC.</p
Interatomic potentials for atomistic simulations of the Ti-Al system
Semi-empirical interatomic potentials have been developed for Al, alpha-Ti,
and gamma-TiAl within the embedded atomic method (EAM) by fitting to a large
database of experimental as well as ab-initio data. The ab-initio calculations
were performed by the linear augmented plane wave (LAPW) method within the
density functional theory to obtain the equations of state for a number of
crystal structures of the Ti-Al system. Some of the calculated LAPW energies
were used for fitting the potentials while others for examining their quality.
The potentials correctly predict the equilibrium crystal structures of the
phases and accurately reproduce their basic lattice properties. The potentials
are applied to calculate the energies of point defects, surfaces, planar faults
in the equilibrium structures. Unlike earlier EAM potentials for the Ti-Al
system, the proposed potentials provide reasonable description of the lattice
thermal expansion, demonstrating their usefulness in the molecular dynamics or
Monte Carlo studies at high temperatures. The energy along the tetragonal
deformation path (Bain transformation) in gamma-TiAl calculated with the EAM
potential is in a fairly good agreement with LAPW calculations. Equilibrium
point defect concentrations in gamma-TiAl are studied using the EAM potential.
It is found that antisite defects strongly dominate over vacancies at all
compositions around stoichiometry, indicating that gamm-TiAl is an antisite
disorder compound in agreement with experimental data.Comment: 46 pages, 6 figures (Physical Review B, in press
Modelling of strain effects in manganite films
Thickness dependence and strain effects in films of
perovskites are analyzed in the colossal magnetoresistance regime. The
calculations are based on a generalization of a variational approach previously
proposed for the study of manganite bulk. It is found that a reduction in the
thickness of the film causes a decrease of critical temperature and
magnetization, and an increase of resistivity at low temperatures. The strain
is introduced through the modifications of in-plane and out-of-plane electron
hopping amplitudes due to substrate-induced distortions of the film unit cell.
The strain effects on the transition temperature and transport properties are
in good agreement with experimental data only if the dependence of the hopping
matrix elements on the bond angle is properly taken into account.
Finally variations of the electron-phonon coupling linked to the presence of
strain turn out important in influencing the balance of coexisting phases in
the filmComment: 7 figures. To be published on Physical Review
Characterization of Endothelial Cells Associated with Hematopoietic Niche Formation in Humans Identifies IL-33 As an Anabolic Factor
Bone marrow formation requires an orchestrated interplay between osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and hematopoiesis that is thought to be mediated by endothelial cells. The nature of the endothelial cells and the molecular mechanisms underlying these events remain unclear in humans. Here, we identify a subset of endoglin-expressing endothelial cells enriched in human bone marrow during fetal ontogeny and upon regeneration after chemotherapeutic injury. Comprehensive transcriptional characterization by massive parallel RNA sequencing of these cells reveals a phenotypic and molecular similarity to murine type H endothelium and activation of angiocrine factors implicated in hematopoiesis, osteogenesis, and angiogenesis. Interleukin-33 (IL-33) was significantly overexpressed in these endothelial cells and promoted the expansion of distinct subsets of h
