Drastic Reduction of Shot Noise in Semiconductor Superlattices
We have found experimentally that the shot noise of the tunneling current
through an undoped semiconductor superlattice is reduced with respect to the
Poissonian noise value , and that the noise approaches 1/3 of that value
in superlattices whose quantum wells are strongly coupled. On the other hand,
when the coupling is weak or when a strong electric field is applied to the
superlattice the noise becomes Poissonian. Although our results are
qualitatively consistent with existing theories for one-dimensional mulitple
barriers, the theories cannot account for the dependence of the noise on
superlattice parameters that we have observed.Comment: 4 Pages, 3Figure
Magnetic permeability of near-critical 3d abelian Higgs model and duality
The three-dimensional abelian Higgs model has been argued to be dual to a
scalar field theory with a global U(1) symmetry. We show that this duality,
together with the scaling and universality hypotheses, implies a scaling law
for the magnetic permeablity chi_m near the line of second order phase
transition: chi_m ~ t^nu, where t is the deviation from the critical line and
nu ~ 0.67 is a critical exponent of the O(2) universality class. We also show
that exactly on the critical lines, the dependence of magnetic induction on
external magnetic field is quadratic, with a proportionality coefficient
depending only on the gauge coupling. These predictions provide a way for
testing the duality conjecture on the lattice in the Coulomb phase and at the
phase transion.Comment: 11 pages; updated references and small changes, published versio
Electroweak phase transition in the MSSM with four generations
By assuming the existence of the sequential fourth generation to the minimal
supersymmetric standard model (MSSM), we study the possibility of a strongly
first-order electroweak phase transition. We find that there is a parameter
region of the MSSM where the electroweak phase transition is strongly first
order. In that parameter region, the mass of the lighter scalar Higgs boson is
calculated to be above the experimental lower bound, and the scalar quarks of
the third and the fourth generations are heavier than the corresponding quarks.Comment: 12 pages, 2 tables, 2 figure
Color Superconductivity from Supersymmetry
A supersymmetric composite model of color superconductivity is proposed.
Quarks and diquarks are dynamically generated as composite fields by a newly
introduced strong gauge dynamics. It is shown that the condensation of the
scalar component of the diquark supermultiplet occurs when the chemical
potential becomes larger than some critical value. We believe that the model
well captures aspects of the diquark condensate behavior and helps our
understanding of the diquark dynamics in real QCD. The results obtained here
might be useful when we consider a theory composed of quarks and diquarks.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, An error in Eq.(10) correcte
Infrared Hall conductivity of NaCoO
We report infrared Hall conductivity of
NaCoO thin films determined from Faraday rotation angle
measurements. exhibits two types of hole
conduction, Drude and incoherent carriers. The coherent Drude carrier shows a
large renormalized mass and Fermi liquid-like behavior of Hall scattering rate,
. The spectral weight is suppressed and disappears at T
= 120K. The incoherent carrier response is centered at mid-IR frequency and
shifts to lower energy with increasing T. Infrared Hall constant is positive
and almost independent of temperature in sharp contrast with the dc-Hall
constant.Comment: 5 Pages, 5 Figures. Author list corrected in metadata only, paper is

Global Strings in High Density QCD
We show that several types of global strings occur in colour superconducting
quark matter due to the spontaneous violation of relevant U(1) symmetries.
These include the baryon U(1)_B, and approximate axial U(1)_A symmetries as
well as an approximate U(1)_S arising from kaon condensation. We discuss some
general properties of these strings and their interactions. In particular, we
demonstrate that the U(1)_A strings behave as superconducting strings. We draw
some parallels between these strings and global cosmological strings and
discuss some possible implications of these strings to the physics in neutron
star cores.Comment: LaTeX JHEP-format (26 pages) Option in source for REVTeX4 forma
Clustering of vacancy defects in high-purity semi-insulating SiC
Positron lifetime spectroscopy was used to study native vacancy defects in
semi-insulating silicon carbide. The material is shown to contain (i) vacancy
clusters consisting of 4--5 missing atoms and (ii) Si vacancy related
negatively charged defects. The total open volume bound to the clusters
anticorrelates with the electrical resistivity both in as-grown and annealed
material. Our results suggest that Si vacancy related complexes compensate
electrically the as-grown material, but migrate to increase the size of the
clusters during annealing, leading to loss of resistivity.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure
Characterization of the nitrogen split interstitial defect in wurtzite aluminum nitride using density functional theory
We carried out Heyd-Scuseria-Ernzerhof hybrid density functional theory plane
wave supercell calculations in wurtzite aluminum nitride in order to
characterize the geometry, formation energies, transition levels and hyperfine
tensors of the nitrogen split interstitial defect. The calculated hyperfine
tensors may provide useful fingerprint of this defect for electron paramagnetic
resonance measurement.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
(Non)-Renormalization of the Chiral Vortical Effect Coefficient
We show using diagramtic arguments that in some (but not all) cases, the
temperature dependent part of the chiral vortical effect coefficient is
independent of the coupling constant. An interpretation of this result in terms
of quantization in the effective 3 dimensional Chern-Simons theory is also
given. In the language of 3D dimensionally reduced theory, the value of the
chiral vortical coefficient is related to the formula . We also show that in the presence of dynamical gauge fields, the CVE
coefficient is not protected from renormalization, even in the large limit.Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Version 2 corrects an error and calculates
