    A metal-oxide-silicon (MOS) capacitor-type particulate sensor was evaluated for use in atmospheric measurements. An accelerator system was designed and tested for the purpose of providing the necessary energy to trigger the MOS-type sensor. The accelerator system and the MOS sensor were characterized as a function of particle size and velocity. Diamond particles were used as particulate sources in laboratory tests. Preliminary tests were performed in which the detector was mounted on an aircraft and flown in the vicinity of coal-fired electric generating plants

    A device is described for counting aerosols and sorting them according to either size, mass or energy. The component parts are an accelerator, a capacitor sensor and a readout. The accelerator is a means for accelerating the aerosols toward the face of the capacitor sensor with such force that they partially penetrate the capacitor sensor, momentarily discharging it. The readout device is a means for counting the number of discharges of the capacitor sensor and measuring the amplitudes of these different discharges. The aerosols are accelerated by the accelerator in the direction of the metal layer with such force that they penetrate the metal and damage the oxide layers, thereby allowing the electrical charge on the capacitor to discharge through the damaged region. Each incident aerosol initiates a discharge path through the capacitor in such a fashion as to vaporize the conducting path. Once the discharge action is complete, the low resistance path no longer exists between the two capacitor plates and the capacitor is again able to accept a charge. The active area of the capacitor is reduced in size by the damaged area each time a discharge occurs

    Canvil: Designerly Adaptation for LLM-Powered User Experiences

    Advancements in large language models (LLMs) are poised to spark a proliferation of LLM-powered user experiences. In product teams, designers are often tasked with crafting user experiences that align with user needs. To involve designers and leverage their user-centered perspectives to create effective and responsible LLM-powered products, we introduce the practice of designerly adaptation for engaging with LLMs as an adaptable design material. We first identify key characteristics of designerly adaptation through a formative study with designers experienced in designing for LLM-powered products (N=12). These characteristics are 1) have a low technical barrier to entry, 2) leverage designers' unique perspectives bridging users and technology, and 3) encourage model tinkering. Based on this characterization, we build Canvil, a Figma widget that operationalizes designerly adaptation. Canvil supports structured authoring of system prompts to adapt LLM behavior, testing of adapted models on diverse user inputs, and integration of model outputs into interface designs. We use Canvil as a technology probe in a group-based design study (6 groups, N=17) to investigate the implications of integrating designerly adaptation into design workflows. We find that designers are able to iteratively tinker with different adaptation approaches and reason about interface affordances to enhance end-user interaction with LLMs. Furthermore, designers identified promising collaborative workflows for designerly adaptation. Our work opens new avenues for collaborative processes and tools that foreground designers' user-centered expertise in the crafting and deployment of LLM-powered user experiences

    A successful lifestyle intervention model replicated in diverse clinical settings

    Lifestyle interventions (LIs) can treat metabolic syndrome and prevent type 2 diabetes mellitus, but they remain underutilised in routine practice. In 2010, an LI model was created in a rural primary care practice and spread with few resources to four other rural practices. A retrospective chart review evaluated changes in health indicators in two practice environments by following 372 participants, mainly women (mean age 52  years). Participants had a mean body mass index of 37 kg/m2 at baseline and lost an average of 12% of their initial body weight as a result of the intervention. Among  participants at the first intervention site for whom cardiometabolic data were available, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome decreased from 58% at baseline to 19% at follow-up. Taken as a whole, our experience suggests that LIs are feasible and deliver meaningful results in routine primary care practice

    The Orbiting Meteoroid and Debris Counting Experiment (OMDC) flew for approximately 90 days in a highly elliptical earth orbit onboard the Clementine Interstage Adapter (ISA) Spacecraft. This experiment obtained data on the impact flux of natural micrometeoroids and it provided limited information on the population of small mass man-made debris as a function of altitude in near earth space. The flight of the OMDC experiment on the ISA spacecraft also demonstrated that the ultra-lightweight, low-power, particle impact detector system that was used is a viable system for flights on future spacecraft to monitor the population of small mass man-made debris particles and to map the cosmic dust environment encountered on interplanetary missions. An overview of the ISA spacecraft mission, the approach to the OMDC experiment, and the data obtained by the experiment are presented

    Complete reannotation of the Arabidopsis genome: methods, tools, protocols and the final release

    BACKGROUND: Since the initial publication of its complete genome sequence, Arabidopsis thaliana has become more important than ever as a model for plant research. However, the initial genome annotation was submitted by multiple centers using inconsistent methods, making the data difficult to use for many applications. RESULTS: Over the course of three years, TIGR has completed its effort to standardize the structural and functional annotation of the Arabidopsis genome. Using both manual and automated methods, Arabidopsis gene structures were refined and gene products were renamed and assigned to Gene Ontology categories. We present an overview of the methods employed, tools developed, and protocols followed, summarizing the contents of each data release with special emphasis on our final annotation release (version 5). CONCLUSION: Over the entire period, several thousand new genes and pseudogenes were added to the annotation. Approximately one third of the originally annotated gene models were significantly refined yielding improved gene structure annotations, and every protein-coding gene was manually inspected and classified using Gene Ontology terms

    A lattice in more than two Kac--Moody groups is arithmetic

    Let Γ\Gamma be an irreducible lattice in a product of n infinite irreducible complete Kac-Moody groups of simply laced type over finite fields. We show that if n is at least 3, then each Kac-Moody groups is in fact a simple algebraic group over a local field and Γ\Gamma is an arithmetic lattice. This relies on the following alternative which is satisfied by any irreducible lattice provided n is at least 2: either Γ\Gamma is an S-arithmetic (hence linear) group, or it is not residually finite. In that case, it is even virtually simple when the ground field is large enough.
