Olive oil phenolics: effects on DNA oxidation and redox enzyme mRNA in prostate cells

Department (SERAD).Hydroxytyrosol, tyrosol and caffeic acid effects on hydrogen peroxide-induced DNA damage, hydroperoxide generation and redox enzyme gene expression were studied in oxidative-stress-sensitive human prostate cells (PC3). Hydroxytyrosol led to lower levels of hydroperoxides, DNA damage, and mRNA levels of classic glutathione peroxidase (GPx) for all the studied concentrations. Only hydroxytyrosol was effective at low concentrations (10 μM). TYROSOL REDUCED DNA OXIDATION ONLY AT HIGH (>50 Μm) concentrations and increased hydroperoxides, GPx and phospholipid hydroperoxide GPx mRNA levels. Caffeic acid elicited effects between those of the other two phenolics. Results indicate that hydroxytyrosol is the only significant antioxidant phenolic in olive oil and may be the major component accounting for its beneficial properties. Tyrosol appeared to exhibit pro-oxidant effects (only at high concentrations) and caffeic acid was neutral. Fuzzy cellular model for on-line traffic simulation
This paper introduces a fuzzy cellular model of road traffic that was
intended for on-line applications in traffic control. The presented model uses
fuzzy sets theory to deal with uncertainty of both input data and simulation
results. Vehicles are modelled individually, thus various classes of them can
be taken into consideration. In the proposed approach, all parameters of
vehicles are described by means of fuzzy numbers. The model was implemented in
a simulation of vehicles queue discharge process. Changes of the queue length
were analysed in this experiment and compared to the results of NaSch cellular

Volatile Decision Dynamics: Experiments, Stochastic Description, Intermittency Control, and Traffic Optimization
The coordinated and efficient distribution of limited resources by individual
decisions is a fundamental, unsolved problem. When individuals compete for road
capacities, time, space, money, goods, etc., they normally make decisions based
on aggregate rather than complete information, such as TV news or stock market
indices. In related experiments, we have observed a volatile decision dynamics
and far-from-optimal payoff distributions. We have also identified ways of
information presentation that can considerably improve the overall performance
of the system. In order to determine optimal strategies of decision guidance by
means of user-specific recommendations, a stochastic behavioural description is
developed. These strategies manage to increase the adaptibility to changing
conditions and to reduce the deviation from the time-dependent user
equilibrium, thereby enhancing the average and individual payoffs. Hence, our
guidance strategies can increase the performance of all users by reducing
overreaction and stabilizing the decision dynamics. These results are highly
significant for predicting decision behaviour, for reaching optimal behavioural
distributions by decision support systems, and for information service

An atmosphere–wave regional coupled model: improving predictions of wave heights and surface winds in the southern North Sea
The coupling of models is a commonly used approach when addressing the
complex interactions between different components of earth systems. We
demonstrate that this approach can result in a reduction of errors in wave
forecasting, especially in dynamically complicated coastal ocean areas, such
as the southern part of the North Sea – the German Bight. Here, we study the effects of coupling of an atmospheric model (COSMO) and a wind wave
model (WAM), which is enabled by implementing wave-induced drag in the
atmospheric model. The numerical simulations use a regional North Sea coupled
wave–atmosphere model as well as a nested-grid high-resolution German Bight wave model. Using one atmospheric and two wind wave models simultaneously
allows for study of the individual and combined effects of two-way coupling
and grid resolution. This approach proved to be particularly important under
severe storm conditions as the German Bight is a very shallow and dynamically
complex coastal area exposed to storm floods. The two-way coupling leads to a
reduction of both surface wind speeds and simulated wave heights. In this
study, the sensitivity of atmospheric parameters, such as wind speed and
atmospheric pressure, to the wave-induced drag, in particular under storm
conditions, and the impact of two-way coupling on the wave model performance,
is quantified. Comparisons between data from in situ and satellite altimeter
observations indicate that two-way coupling improves the simulation of wind
and wave parameters of the model and justify its implementation for both
operational and climate simulations
An agent-based approach to assess drivers’ interaction with pre-trip information systems.
This article reports on the practical use of a multi-agent microsimulation framework to address the issue of assessing drivers’
responses to pretrip information systems. The population of drivers is represented as a community of autonomous agents,
and travel demand results from the decision-making deliberation performed by each individual of the population as regards
route and departure time. A simple simulation scenario was devised, where pretrip information was made available to users
on an individual basis so that its effects at the aggregate level could be observed. The simulation results show that the
overall performance of the system is very likely affected by exogenous information, and these results are ascribed to demand
formation and network topology. The expressiveness offered by cognitive approaches based on predicate logics, such as the
one used in this research, appears to be a promising approximation to fostering more complex behavior modelling, allowing
us to represent many of the mental aspects involved in the deliberation process
Correlated electrons in the presence of disorder
Several new aspects of the subtle interplay between electronic correlations
and disorder are reviewed. First, the dynamical mean-field theory
(DMFT)together with the geometrically averaged ("typical") local density of
states is employed to compute the ground state phase diagram of the
Anderson-Hubbard model at half-filling. This non-perturbative approach is
sensitive to Anderson localization on the one-particle level and hence can
detect correlated metallic, Mott insulating and Anderson insulating phases and
can also describe the competition between Anderson localization and
antiferromagnetism. Second, we investigate the effect of binary alloy disorder
on ferromagnetism in materials with -electrons described by the periodic
Anderson model. A drastic enhancement of the Curie temperature caused by
an increase of the local -moments in the presence of disordered conduction

Effect of Lactobacillus casei on the production of pro-inflammatory markers in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats.
It has been demonstrated that probiotic supplementation has positive effects in several murine models of disease through influences on host immune responses. This study examined the effect of Lactobacillus casei strain Shirota (L. casei Shirota) on the blood glucose, C-reactive protein (CRP), Interleukin-6 (IL-6), Interleukin-4 (IL-4), and body weight among STZ-induced diabetic rats. Diabetes mellitus was induced by streptozotocin (STZ, 50 mg/kg BW) in male Sprague–Dawley rats. Streptozotocin caused a significant increase in the blood glucose levels, CRP, and IL-6. L. casei Shirota supplementation lowered the CRP and IL-6 levels but had no significant effect on the blood glucose levels, body weight, or IL-4. Inflammation was determined histologically. The presence of the innate immune cells was not detectable in the liver of L. casei Shirota-treated hyperglycemic rats. The probiotic L. casei Shirota significantly lowered blood levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-6, CRP) and neutrophils in diabetic rats, showing a lower risk of diabetes mellitus and its complications
Ocean and coastal acidification off New England and Nova Scotia

The definitive version was published in Oceanography 28, no. 2 (2015): 182-197, doi:10.5670/oceanog.2015.41.New England coastal and adjacent Nova Scotia shelf waters have a reduced buffering capacity because of significant freshwater input, making the region’s waters potentially more vulnerable to coastal acidification. Nutrient loading and heavy precipitation events further acidify the region’s poorly buffered coastal waters. Despite the apparent vulnerability of these waters, and fisheries’ and mariculture’s significant dependence on calcifying species, the community lacks the ability to confidently predict how the region’s ecosystems will respond to continued ocean and coastal acidification. Here, we discuss ocean and coastal acidification processes specific to New England coastal and Nova Scotia shelf waters and review current understanding of the biological consequences most relevant to the region. We also identify key research and monitoring needs to be addressed and highlight existing capacities that should be leveraged to advance a regional understanding of ocean and coastal acidification.This project was supported in part by an appointment
