Laser velocimetry in the low-speed wind tunnels at Ames Research Center
The historical development of laser velocimetry and its application to low-speed (less than 100 m/sec) aerodynamic flows in the subsonic wind tunnels at Ames Research Center is reviewed. A fully three dimensional velocimeter for the Ames 7- by 10-Foot Wind Tunnel is described, and its capabilities are presented through sample data from a recent experiment. Finally, a long-range (2.6 to 10 m) velocimeter that is designed to be installed within the test section of the Ames 40- by 80-Foot Wind Tunnel is described and sample data are presented
A laser velocimeter system for large-scale aerodynamic testing
A unique laser velocimeter was developed that is capable of sensing two orthogonal velocity components from a variable remote distance of 2.6 to 10 m for use in the 40- by 80-Foot and 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnels and the Outdoor Aerodynamic Research Facility at Ames Research Center. The system hardware, positioning instrumentation, and data acquisition equipment are described in detail; system capabilities and limitations are discussed; and expressions for systematic and statistical accuracy are developed. Direct and coupled laboratory measurements taken with the system are compared with measurements taken with a laser velocimeter of higher spatial resolution, and sample data taken in the open circuit exhaust flow of a 1/50-scale model of the 80- by 120-Foot Wind Tunnel are presented
Massless Scalar Field Propagator in a Quantized Space-Time
We consider in detail the analytic behaviour of the non-interacting massless
scalar field two-point function in H.S. Snyder's discretized non-commuting
spacetime. The propagator we find is purely real on the Euclidean side of the
complex plane and goes like as from either the
Euclidean or Minkowski side. The real part of the propagator goes smoothly to
zero as increases to the discretization scale and remains zero
for . This behaviour is consistent with the termination of
single-particle propagation on the ultraviolet side of the discretization
scale. The imaginary part of the propagator, consistent with a
multiparticle-production branch discontinuity, is finite and continuous on the
Minkowski side, slowly falling to zero when . Finally, we
argue that the spectral function for the multiparticle states appears to
saturate as probes just beyond the discretization scale. We
speculate on the cosmological consequences of such a spectral function.Comment: 6 pages, 1 eps figure embedded in manuscrip
A New Template Family For The Detection Of Gravitational Waves From Comparable Mass Black Hole Binaries
In order to improve the phasing of the comparable-mass waveform as we
approach the last stable orbit for a system, various re-summation methods have
been used to improve the standard post-Newtonian waveforms. In this work we
present a new family of templates for the detection of gravitational waves from
the inspiral of two comparable-mass black hole binaries. These new adiabatic
templates are based on re-expressing the derivative of the binding energy and
the gravitational wave flux functions in terms of shifted Chebyshev
polynomials. The Chebyshev polynomials are a useful tool in numerical methods
as they display the fastest convergence of any of the orthogonal polynomials.
In this case they are also particularly useful as they eliminate one of the
features that plagues the post-Newtonian expansion. The Chebyshev binding
energy now has information at all post-Newtonian orders, compared to the
post-Newtonian templates which only have information at full integer orders. In
this work, we compare both the post-Newtonian and Chebyshev templates against a
fiducially exact waveform. This waveform is constructed from a hybrid method of
using the test-mass results combined with the mass dependent parts of the
post-Newtonian expansions for the binding energy and flux functions. Our
results show that the Chebyshev templates achieve extremely high fitting
factors at all PN orders and provide excellent parameter extraction. We also
show that this new template family has a faster Cauchy convergence, gives a
better prediction of the position of the Last Stable Orbit and in general
recovers higher Signal-to-Noise ratios than the post-Newtonian templates.Comment: Final published version. Accepted for publication in Phys. Rev.
Demixing of aqueous polymer two-phase systems in low gravity
When polymers such as dextran and poly(ethylene glycol) are mixed in aqueous solution biphasic systems often form. On Earth the emulsion formed by mixing the phases rapidly demixes because of phase density differences. Biological materials can be purified by selective partitioning between the phases. In the case of cells and other particulates the efficiency of these separations appears to be somewhat compromised by the demixing process. To modify this process and to evaluate the potential of two-phase partitioning in space, experiments on the effects of gravity on phase emulsion demixing were undertaken. The behavior of phase systems with essentially identical phase densities was studied at one-g and during low-g parabolic aircraft maneuvers. The results indicate the demixing can occur rather rapidly in space, although more slowly than on Earth. The demixing process was examined from a theoretical standpoint by applying the theory of Ostwald ripening. This theory predicts demizing rates many orders of magnitude lower than observed. Other possible demixing mechanisms are considered
Low Temperature Spin Freezing in Dy2Ti2O7 Spin Ice
We report a study of the low temperature bulk magnetic properties of the spin
ice compound Dy2Ti2O7 with particular attention to the (T < 4 K) spin freezing
transition. While this transition is superficially similar to that in a spin
glass, there are important qualitative differences from spin glass behavior:
the freezing temperature increases slightly with applied magnetic field, and
the distribution of spin relaxation times remains extremely narrow down to the
lowest temperatures. Furthermore, the characteristic spin relaxation time
increases faster than exponentially down to the lowest temperatures studied.
These results indicate that spin-freezing in spin ice materials represents a
novel form of magnetic glassiness associated with the unusual nature of
geometrical frustration in these materials.Comment: 24 pages, 8 figure
Spin Dynamics at Very Low Temperature in Spin Ice DyTiO
We have performed AC susceptibility and DC magnetic relaxation measurements
on the spin ice system DyTiO down to 0.08 K. The relaxation time of
the magnetization has been estimated below 2 K down to 0.08 K. The spin
dynamics of DyTiO is well described by using two relaxation times
( (short time) and (long time)). Both and increase on cooling. Assuming the Arrhenius law in the
temperature range 0.5-1 K, we obtained an energy barrier of 9 K. Below 0.5 K,
both and show a clear deviation from the thermal
activated dynamics toward temperature independent relaxation, suggesting a
quantum dynamics.Comment: 4 page
Dissipation-driven quantum phase transitions in collective spin systems
We consider two different collective spin systems subjected to strong
dissipation -- on the same scale as interaction strengths and external fields
-- and show that either continuous or discontinuous dissipative quantum phase
transitions can occur as the dissipation strength is varied. First, we consider
a well known model of cooperative resonance fluorescence that can exhibit a
second-order quantum phase transition, and analyze the entanglement properties
near the critical point. Next, we examine a dissipative version of the
Lipkin-Meshkov-Glick interacting collective spin model, where we find that
either first- or second-order quantum phase transitions can occur, depending
only on the ratio of the interaction and external field parameters. We give
detailed results and interpretation for the steady state entanglement in the
vicinity of the critical point, where it reaches a maximum. For the first-order
transition we find that the semiclassical steady states exhibit a region of
bistability.Comment: 12 pages, 16 figures, removed section on homodyne spectr
