Formation of Black Holes from Collapsed Cosmic String Loops
The fraction of cosmic string loops which collapse to form black holes is
estimated using a set of realistic loops generated by loop fragmentation. The
smallest radius sphere into which each cosmic string loop may fit is obtained
by monitoring the loop through one period of oscillation. For a loop with
invariant length which contracts to within a sphere of radius , the
minimum mass-per-unit length necessary for the cosmic string
loop to form a black hole according to the hoop conjecture is . Analyzing loops, we obtain the empirical estimate for the fraction of cosmic string
loops which collapse to form black holes as a function of the mass-per-unit
length in the range . We
use this power law to extrapolate to , obtaining the
fraction of physically interesting cosmic string loops which
collapse to form black holes within one oscillation period of formation.
Comparing this fraction with the observational bounds on a population of
evaporating black holes, we obtain the limit on the cosmic string mass-per-unit-length. This limit is consistent

Home accidents amongst elderly people: A locality study in Scotland
Aim
The aim of this locality study was to collect information on reported and unreported accidents amongst elderly people living in one locality in Scotland.
Method
Postal Survey- A postal questionnaire was sent to 3,757 men and women aged 65+ years living in one locality. The questionnaire asked respondents to indicate how many accidents they had experienced in the past twelve months, plus to indicate type and location. Information was gathered on living arrangements, ethnicity, gender, age and deprivation. Respondents were asked if they would be willing to take part in an interview study.
Interview Study - One hundred elders who had had at least one accident in the previous twelve months were interviewed.
Results
Postal Survey - Over a third of the respondents in the postal survey reported having had an accident in the previous twelve months. Bumps and drops and falls were the most common type of accident. Most accidents happened in the kitchen. Women reported more falls than men and those living alone reported more accidents than those living with others. Age was associated with the prevalence of accidents, but the association was somewhat curvilinear, with accidents decreasing with age and then increasing again.
Interview Study â Interviewees found it hard to differentiate one accident from another. Considerable reluctance to visit the GP after an accident was noted, with many not attending even for serious accidents. Almost forty percent were âveryâ distressed after their accident, and a quarter reported a loss of confidence. However, most did not worry about accidents. Few thought that their age, health or medications were a cause of their accidents
Cosmology with velocity dispersion counts: an alternative to measuring cluster halo masses
The evolution of galaxy cluster counts is a powerful probe of several
fundamental cosmological parameters. A number of recent studies using this
probe have claimed tension with the cosmology preferred by the analysis of the
Planck primary CMB data, in the sense that there are fewer clusters observed
than predicted based on the primary CMB cosmology. One possible resolution to
this problem is systematic errors in the absolute halo mass calibration in
cluster studies, which is required to convert the standard theoretical
prediction (the halo mass function) into counts as a function of the observable
(e.g., X-ray luminosity, Sunyaev-Zel'dovich flux, optical richness). Here we
propose an alternative strategy, which is to directly compare predicted and
observed cluster counts as a function of the one-dimensional velocity
dispersion of the cluster galaxies. We argue that the velocity dispersion of
groups/clusters can be theoretically predicted as robustly as mass but, unlike
mass, it can also be directly observed, thus circumventing the main systematic
bias in traditional cluster counts studies. With the aid of the BAHAMAS suite
of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations, we demonstrate the potential of the
velocity dispersion counts for discriminating even similar CDM models.
These predictions can be compared with the results from existing redshift
surveys such as the highly-complete Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) survey, and
upcoming wide-field spectroscopic surveys such as the Wide Area Vista

Electron Neutrino Mass Measurement by Supernova Neutrino Bursts and Implications on Hot Dark Matter
We present a new strategy for measuring the electron neutrino mass (\mnue)
by future detection of a Galactic supernova in large underground detectors such
as the Super-Kamiokande (SK). This method is nearly model-independent and one
can get a mass constraint in a straightforward way from experimental data
without specifying any model parameters for profiles of supernova neutrinos. We
have tested this method using virtual data generated from a numerical model of
supernova neutrino emission by realistic Monte-Carlo simulations of the SK
detection. It is shown that this method is sensitive to \mnue of 3 eV
for a Galactic supernova, and this range is as low as the prediction of the
cold+hot dark matter scenario with a nearly degenerate mass hierarchy of
neutrinos, which is consistent with the current observations of solar and

Parametrization of dark energy equation of state Revisited
A comparative study of various parametrizations of the dark energy equation
of state is made. Astrophysical constraints from LSS, CMB and BBN are laid down
to test the physical viability and cosmological compatibility of these
parametrizations. A critical evaluation of the 4-index parametrizations reveals
that Hannestad-M\"{o}rtsell as well as Lee parametrizations are simple and
transparent in probing the evolution of the dark energy during the expansion
history of the universe and they satisfy the LSS, CMB and BBN constraints on
the dark energy density parameter for the best fit values.Comment: 11 page
Older adultsâ experiences of the rehabilitation process in acute health care.
Rehabilitation is a key component of nursing and allied healthcare professionalsâ roles in most health and social care settings. This paper reports on stage 2 of an action research project to ascertain older adultâs experience of rehabilitation. Twenty postdischarge interviews were conducted and the interview transcripts were analysed using thematic content analysis. All older adults discharged from an acute older acute rehabilitation ward to their own homes in the community were eligible to participate. The only exclusion criterion was older adults who were thought to be unable to give consent to participate by the nurse in charge and the researcher. Whilst 92 older adults were eligible to participate in this research study, only 20 were interviewed. The findings from this study suggest that older adults valued communication with health professionals but were aware of their time constraints that hindered communication. This study suggests that both nurses and allied health professionals are not actively providing rehabilitative services to promote health and well-being which contradicts the focus of active ageing. Furthermore, there was evidence of unmet needs on discharge, and older adults unable to recall the professions that were involved in their interventions and the rationale for therapy input. It is suggested that further research is needed to explore the effectiveness of allied health rehabilitation in the acute setting. This study highlights the need for further research into older adultsâ perceptions of the rehabilitation process in the acute setting
Neutrino Oscillations and Lepton Flavor Mixing
In view of the recent announcement on non-zero neutrino mass from
Super-Kamiokande experiment, it would be very timely to investigate all the
possible scenarios on masses and mixings of light neutrinos. Recently suggested
mass matrix texture for the quark CKM mixing, which can be originated from the
family permutation symmetry and its suitable breakings, is assumed for the
neutrino mass matrix and determined by the four combinations of solar,
atmospheric and LSND neutrino data and cosmological hot dark matter bound as
input constraints. The charged-lepton mass matrix is assumed to be diagonal so
that the neutrino mixing matrix can be identified directly as the lepton flavor
mixing matrix and no CP invariance violation originates from the leptonic
sector. The results favor hierarchical patterns for the neutrino masses, which
follow from the case when either solar-atmospheric data or solar-HDM

Equation of state description of the dark energy transition between quintessence and phantom regimes
The dark energy crossing of the cosmological constant boundary (the
transition between the quintessence and phantom regimes) is described in terms
of the implicitly defined dark energy equation of state. The generalizations of
the models explicitly constructed to exhibit the crossing provide the insight
