Digital data averager improves conventional measurement system performance
Multipurpose digital averager provides measurement improvement in noisy signal environments. It provides increased measurement accuracy and resolution to basic instrumentation devices by an arithmetical process in real time. It is used with standard conventional measurement equipment and digital data printers
Stark ladders as tunable far-infrared emitters
A superlattice of GaAs/Ga(1 – x)Al(x)As quantum wells forms a Stark ladder under the influence of a perpendicular electric field. A two level incoherent emitter system, formed by radiative intersubband transitions between adjacent wells, is investigated as a tunable far-infrared radiation source. Intersubband transition rates are calculated at 4, 77, and 300 K for applied fields from 0 to 40 kV cm(–1). It is shown that the quantum efficiency of the radiative emission reaches a maximum at low temperatures for a field of 32 kV cm(–1). Under these conditions the emission wavelength is 38 µm with an estimated power output of 1.1 mW. © 1998 American Institute of Physics
Analytical stability and simulation response study for a coupled two-body system
An analytical stability study and a digital simulation response study of two connected rigid bodies are documented. Relative rotation of the bodies at the connection is allowed, thereby providing a model suitable for studying system stability and response during a soft-dock regime. Provisions are made of a docking port axes alignment torque and a despin torque capability for encountering spinning payloads. Although the stability analysis is based on linearized equations, the digital simulation is based on nonlinear models
Coupled thermomechanical dynamics of phase transitions in shape memory alloys and related hysteresis phenomena
In this paper the nonlinear dynamics of shape memory alloy phase transformations is studied with thermomechanical models based on coupled systems of partial differential equations by using computer algebra tools. The reduction procedures of the original model to a system of differential-algebraic equations and its solution are based on the general methodology developed by the authors for the analysis of phase transformations in shape memory materials with low dimensional approximations derived from center manifold theory. Results of computational experiments revealing the martensitic-austenitic phase transition mechanism in a shape-memory-alloy rod are presented. Several groups of computational experiments are reported. They include results on stress- and temperature-induced phase transformations as well as the analysis of the hysteresis phenomenon. All computational experiments are presented for Cu-based structures
Nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy: Abnormal splitting of ethyl groups due to molecular asymmetry
Nuclear magnetic resonance (n.m.r.) spectroscopy provides an excellent means for qualitative identification of ethyl groups by use of the familiar three-four pattern of spin-spin splitting (1). It has been observed previously (2) that the methylene protons of systems of the type R-CH2-CR1R2R3 (where R1 can be the same as R or different) may be magnetically nonequivalent and display AB rather than A2-type spectra (3). We now wish to report several examples of this type of behavior with ethyl groups, particularly ethoxy groups, knowledge of which could be important to anyone using n.m.r. for organic qualitative analysis
Mixed mode oscillations in a conceptual climate model
Much work has been done on relaxation oscillations and other simple
oscillators in conceptual climate models. However, the oscillatory patterns in
climate data are often more complicated than what can be described by such
mechanisms. This paper examines complex oscillatory behavior in climate data
through the lens of mixed-mode oscillations. As a case study, a conceptual
climate model with governing equations for global mean temperature, atmospheric
carbon, and oceanic carbon is analyzed. The nondimensionalized model is a
fast/slow system with one fast variable (corresponding to ice volume) and two
slow variables (corresponding to the two carbon stores). Geometric singular
perturbation theory is used to demonstrate the existence of a folded node
singularity. A parameter regime is found in which (singular) trajectories that
pass through the folded node are returned to the singular funnel in the
limiting case where . In this parameter regime, the model has a
stable periodic orbit of type for some . To our knowledge, it is the
first conceptual climate model demonstrated to have the capability to produce
an MMO pattern.Comment: 28 pages, 11 figure
