    Multimode circular integrated optical microresonators: Coupled mode theory modeling

    A frequency domain model of multimode circular microresonators for filter applications in integrated optics is investigated. Analytical basis modes of 2D bent waveguides or curved interfaces are combined with modes of straight channels in a spatial coupled mode theory framework. Free of fitting parameters, the model allows to predict quite efficiently the spectral response of the microresonators. It turns out to be sufficient to take only a few dominant cavity modes into account. Comparisons of these simulations with computationally more expensive rigorous numerical calculations show a satisfactory agreement

    Diarrhoeal disease outbreak in a rural area of Karnataka

    Background: Acute diarrhoea is the passage of 3 or more loose or watery stools in the past 24 hours with or without dehydration. Owing to WASH strategy (Water, Sanitation and Hygiene) the burden of diarrheal diseases has seen a tremendous decline over the past 2 decades. Cholera is an acute diarrhoeal infection caused by ingestion of food or water contaminated with the bacterium Vibrio Cholerae. Objectives: 1. To document the factors responsible for the outbreak. 2. To provide recommendations for prevention and control of such outbreaks in future. Methods: After receiving verbal information from district office regarding outbreak of diarrhoeal disease (cholera) in a town of Bijapur district, we independently conducted a cross sectional study in the affected area and collected information regarding no. of people affected since the outbreak, their age and sex distribution. A total of 3802 people were interviewed using a predesigned questionnaire on 28th and 29th July, 2012. We also conducted environmental investigation regarding the source of contamination and collected 2 water samples from drinking water source. Results: All the cases were clustered in the five streets, which were consuming water from contaminated two water tanks. A total of 121 cases of diarrhoea were identified affecting 3.18% of the population. Attack rate of cholera was highest (4.5%) in 25-34 years age group followed by 4.22% in 15-24 years age group. Attack rates was higher among females (3.4%) compared to males (2.9%). Laboratory report stated that water samples were unfit for drinking purpose. V. Cholera (Ogawa serotype) was isolated from water sample. Conclusion: Consumption of contaminated water from a newly dug bore-well had led to the diarrhea outbreak. Lack of sanitation and hygiene had worsened the situation

    Evaluation of Serum HDL and LDL levels in Type II Diabetes Mellitus

      Introduction: Diabetes mellitus is a type of metabolic disorder characterized by hyperglycemia resulting from defect in insulin secretion, insulin action or both. This study intended to compare High Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (HDL) and Low Density Lipoprotein Cholesterol (LDL) profile between type II diabetic and non-diabetic subjects and also find the correlation between HDL and LDL cholesterol in type II diabetic.   Methods: The study was conducted on 100 total subjects out of which experimental group with 50 subjects of known Type II Diabetes mellitus and control group with 50 subjects.   Results: The result of the present study suggests that fasting blood sugar and LDL cholesterol levels were increased but HDL cholesterol level was reduced in type II diabetic subjects when compared to controls.   Conclusion: The estimation of HDL cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in type II diabetes mellitus is very useful as it may serve as a useful parameter to monitor the prognosis of the patient

    A CASE REPORT OF SHADBINDU TAILA NASYA AND TRIKATU DHOOMAPANA ON APEENASA-ATROPHIC RHINITIS

    Acharya Sushruta stated 28 Nasagata rogas. Out of these 28 Nasagata rogas some features of Pootinashya, Dushtha Pratishyaya and Apeenasa are similar to the clinical features of Atrophic Rhinitis (AR). Apeenasa is a Nasagata Roga characterized by nasal obstruction, running nose, Dryness of nose, anosmia, and loss of taste. This condition can be co-related with Atrophic Rhinitis. Though there are many modalities described in modern ENT, still it is not possible to cease the Permanent Impairment. In Ayurved many modalities are being described for Urdhwajatrugata Rogas and for Nasagata Vikara. Among them Nasya (administered of drugs in to nasal cavity) is best. As it is a Kapha Pradhana Vikara, Katu Dhoomapana can also be added to this procedure. The Nashya procedure is explained by Brihatrayees. The complete procedure of Nashya includes Poorva Karma (Snehana and Swedana), mobilizes the Doshas to the site of elimination and causes vasodilatation which helps in elimination of Doshas and provides better channel for absorption of the Oushadhi. Pradhana Karma (Nashya) eliminates the Doshas. Kavala as Paschat Karma eliminates the remaining Doshas and causes better absorption of the Oushadhi which ultimately eliminates the symptoms of the disease. A clinical observation has shown effective result in the treatment of AR with Shadbindu Taila Nasya and Trikatu Dhoomapana. And here we are revalidating the statement of our Acharyas. A case report of a female, aged 38 years with complain of nasal obstruction, foul smell from nose, anosmia, headache, nasal discharge, sneezing and general weakness has been presented here
