    Water resources management in a homogenizing world: Averting the Growth and Underinvestment trajectory

    Biotic homogenization, a de facto symptom of a global biodiversity crisis, underscores the urgency of reforming water resources management to focus on the health and viability of ecosystems. Global population and economic growth, coupled with inadequate investment in maintenance of ecological systems, threaten to degrade environmental integrity and ecosystem services that support the global socioeconomic system, indicative of a system governed by the Growth and Underinvestment (G&U) archetype. Water resources management is linked to biotic homogenization and degradation of system integrity through alteration of water systems, ecosystem dynamics, and composition of the biota. Consistent with the G&U archetype, water resources planning primarily treats ecological considerations as exogenous constraints rather than integral, dynamic, and responsive parts of the system. It is essential that the ecological considerations be made objectives of water resources development plans to facilitate the analysis of feedbacks and potential trade-offs between socioeconomic gains and ecological losses. We call for expediting a shift to ecosystem-based management of water resources, which requires a better understanding of the dynamics and links between water resources management actions, ecological side-effects, and associated long-term ramifications for sustainability. To address existing knowledge gaps, models that include dynamics and estimated thresholds for regime shifts or ecosystem degradation need to be developed. Policy levers for implementation of ecosystem-based water resources management include shifting away from growth-oriented supply management, better demand management, increased public awareness, and institutional reform that promotes adaptive and transdisciplinary management approaches

    Flows on scales of 150 Mpc?

    We investigate the reality of large-scale streaming on scales of up to 150 Mpc using the peculiar motions of galaxies in three directions. New R-band CCD photometry and spectroscopy for elliptical galaxies is used. The Fundamental Plane distance indicator is calibrated using the Coma cluster and an inhomogeneous Malmquist bias correction is applied. A linear bulk-flow model is fitted to the peculiar velocities in the sample regions and the results do not reflect the bulk flow observed by Lauer and Postman (LP). Accounting for the difference in geometry between the galaxy distribution in the three regions and the LP clustersconfirms the disagreement; assuming a low-density CDM power spectrum, we find that the observed bulk flow of the galaxies in our sample excludes the LP bulk flow at the 99.8% confidence level.Comment: 16 pages, 1 figur

    MF radar observations of mean winds and tides over Poker Flat, Alaska (65.1° N, 147.5° W)

    International audienceMF radar wind measurements in the mesosphere and lower thermosphere over Poker Flat, Alaska (65.1° N, 147.5° W) are used to study the features of mean winds and solar tides. Continuous observation with the newly installed radar is in progress and in the present study we have analyzed a database of the first 27 months (October 1998?December 2000) of observation. The observed mean wind climatology has been compared with previous measurements and the latest empirical model values (HWM93 model). Similarly, the tidal characteristics are described and compared with the Global Scale Wave Model (GSWM00). The mean wind characteristics observed are fairly consistent with previous wind measurements by the Poker Flat MST radar. The main feature of the zonal circulation is the annual variation with summer westward flow and winter eastward flow. The annual mean zonal wind has a west-ward motion at altitudes below 90 km. The annual mean meridional circulation has mainly southward motion at 70?100 km. There is very good agreement between the radar zonal winds and the HWM93 model winds. Comparison of the meridional winds shows some discrepancy. Analysis of two years of data indicated that the year-to-year consistency is preserved in the mean circulation in the mesosphere. Tidal characteristics observed are also consistent with previous measurements. Semidiurnal tides have the largest amplitudes in summer while the weakest amplitude is observed during the winter months. The vertical wavelength is longer during the summer season compared to the winter season. Comparison with the GSWM00 produces mixed results. There is reasonable agreement between the observed and modeled phases. Diurnal tide amplitudes are comparable in magnitude with that of the semidiurnal tide. Seasonal variation is less evident in the amplitudes. Comparison of the observed tidal parameters with the GSWM00 reveals some agreement and discrepancies

    Viability of laser cleaning of papyrus: Conservation and scientific assessment

    There has been a growing interest in laser cleaning applications for a variety of organic materials such as paper, parchment, textiles, and leather during the last decade. However, archaeological organic materials, notably papyrus, have rarely been investigated. This contribution examines whether removal of burial encrustation can be justified in view of its short-term and long-term effects on the substrate. To examine this, tests using mock objects have been performed. Using artificially soiled and archaeological papyrus samples, optimization of laser cleaning parameters using a picosecond laser (1064 nm, various operating conditions) was attempted. Optimization was based on colorimetry, optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and cellulose degree of polymerization data, both before and after accelerated degradation. In papyrus, there is no clear damage threshold, and substrate degradation can always be observed and is comparable in treated (cleaned) and untreated (soiled) objects. Therefore, the decision on whether to clean papyrus using lasers is predominantly based on aesthetic and treatability (e.g. need for consolidation) criteria

    Model for the structure function constant for index of refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Benard turbulence

    A model for the structure function constant associated with index of refraction fluctuations in Rayleigh-Benard turbulence is developed. The model is based upon the following assumptions: (1) the turbulence is homogeneous and isotropic at or near the mid-plane, (2) the rate of production is in balance with the rate of dissipation, (3) an inertial region exists, and (4) estimates for the rate of dissipation of temperature fluctuations and of turbulent kinetic energy can be made by assuming that the large-scale turbulence is dissipated in one eddy turnover time. From these assumptions, the dependence of the structure function on the geometry, heat flux, and the properties of the fluid is obtained. The model predicts that the normalized structure function constant is independent of the Rayleigh number. To verify the model, numerical simulations of Rayleigh-Benard turbulence were performed using two different approaches: an in-house code based on a pseudo-spectral method, and a finite volume code which employs a model for the smallest scales of the turbulence.     Space Launch System Booster Separation Supersonic Powered Testing with Surface and Off-Body Measurements

    A wind tunnel test was run in the NASA Langley Unitary Plan Wind Tunnel simulating the separation of the two solid rocket boosters (SRB) from the core stage of the NASA Space Launch System (SLS). The test was run on a 0.9% scale model of the SLS Block 1B Cargo (27005) configuration and the SLS Block 1B Crew (28005) configuration at a Mach of 4.0. High pressure air was used to simulate plumes from the booster separation motors located at the nose and aft skirt of the two boosters. Force and moment data were taken on both SRBs and on the core stage. Schlieren still photos and video were recorded throughout testing. A set of points were acquired using Cross-correlation Doppler Global Velocimetry (CCDGV) readings to get 3 component velocity measurements between the core and the left-hand SRB. The CCDGV laser was utilized to record flow visualization in the same location, between the core and the left-hand SRB. Pressure Sensitive Paint data were taken on a separate set of runs. Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) runs were computed on a subset of the wind tunnel data points for comparison. A combination of the force/moment, CCDGV and Pressure Sensitive Paint (PSP) data (as well as schlieren images) at the CFD-specified test conditions will be used te the CFD simulations that will be used to build an SLS booster separation database flight conditions

    Stellar Encounters with Massive Star-Disk Systems

    The dense, clustered environment in which massive stars form can lead to interactions with neighboring stars. It has been hypothesized that collisions and mergers may contribute to the growth of the most massive stars. In this paper we extend the study of star-disk interactions to explore encounters between a massive protostar and a less massive cluster sibling using the publicly available SPH code GADGET-2. Collisions do not occur in the parameter space studied, but the end state of many encounters is an eccentric binary with a semi-major axis ~ 100 AU. Disk material is sometimes captured by the impactor. Most encounters result in disruption and destruction of the initial disk, and periodic torquing of the remnant disk. We consider the effect of the changing orientation of the disk on an accretion driven jet, and the evolution of the systems in the presence of on-going accretion from the parent core.Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures, accepted to Ap
