Prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding and its determinants in first 6 months of life: A prospective study
Background: Exclusive breastfeeding for first 6 months of life is recommended under Infant and Young Child Feeding practices in India. The objective of present study was to estimate the prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding during first 6 months of life of babies and to identify factors that interfere with the practice in the study area. Methods: A prospective cohort of 462 women who delivered at maternity unit of Government Medical College & Hospital, Rajkot, which is a tertiary care centre for the district, was studied. Data collection was done at hospital as well as during home visits of babies at 1, 3 and 6 months. Factors related to cessation of breastfeeding were analyzed using univariate, bivariate and multivariate analysis. Results: All 462 mothers reported breastfeeding their newborns. Prevalence of exclusive breastfeeding reported at 3 months was 97% which declined to 62% by 6 months of age of infants. Bivariate analysis revealed no significant association between interruption of exclusive breastfeeding before 6 months of age and various demographic, socioeconomic, maternal and infant characteristics. Multivariate analysis by logistic regression demonstrated no association between discontinuation of exclusive breastfeeding and socioeconomic status, maternal education and maternal age, number of antenatal visits, maternal employment and initiation of breastfeeding after delivery. Conclusion: Exclusive breastfeeding prevalence rate found higher than at national level indicating better feeding practices in these part of India. Also, factors classically considered as supportive for breastfeeding had shown no association with breastfeeding pattern in present study

Supercoil-induced unusual DNA structures as transcriptional block
The transcriptional activity of pBR322 form V DNA template, a topologically unlinked, highly supercoiled molecule having unusual structures around or within coding regions was studied. Significant transcription was observed in vitro from this template despite high levels of supercoiling. An attenuated transcript, initiated accurately from the P4 promoter of rep gene, was observed which indicated pausing of E. coli RNA polymerase within the gene. This pausing could be removed by relieving the torsional stress implying that a supercoil induced structural alteration within the gene was acting as a transcriptional block. A stabilized unusual structure, most likely a cruciform, was found to be responsible for the elongation block. Absence of initiation from the tetR gene was correlated with the unusual structure present within its promoter region in form V DNA. These in vitro studies show that structural alterations within natural DNA could act as transcriptional blocks both at the level of initiation and elongation

Major highlights of researches carried out on kimberlites, lamproites, lamprophyres, carbonatites, other alkaline rocks and mafic dykes from the Indian shield during 2012-2016 are presented. New findings involving field mapping, petrology, geochemistry (including high quality mineral based in situ isotopic studies) and geophysics have provided remarkable insights on the mode of their occurrence, timing of emplacement, mineralogy and bulk-rock composition, redox conditions, relative contribution of the lithosphere and asthenosphere, as well as their economic potential. Several large-scale geodynamic aspects such as plume-lithosphere interactions, ancient subduction events, layered structure of the sub-continental lithospheric mantle, spatial extent of the Precambrian large igneous provinces and supercontinent configurations could be unraveled from these studies on deep-mantle derived small-volume magmatic rocks
Development of Fertilizer Prescription Targeted Yield-Equation for Carrot Crop Based on Soil Test Values
A field experiment was conducted on red soils (Kandic paleustalfs) of Zonal Agricultural Research Station, GKVK, Bangalore during kharif 2008-09 to develop a targeted yield equation for carrot crop. After developing three levels of fertility gradient with respect to available NPK in soil, the main experiment was conducted by taking carrot as a test crop. Initial soil data, carrot root yield and NPK uptake by carrot crop were used for obtaining four important basic parameters, viz., nutrients required to produce a quintal of carrot roots (NR%), contribution of nutrients from fertilizers (CF%), contribution of nutrients from soil (CS%) and contribution of nutrients from organic matter (%C-OM). These parameters were used for developing fertilizer-adjustment targeted yield equation. Comparison of the present soil testing laboratory method with Soil Test Crop Response approach of fertilizer recommendation clearly indicated superiority of STCR targeted yield approach for efficient and economic use of fertilizers to attain the required yield target
Structure of poly(propyl ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer from fully atomistic molecular Dynamics Simulation and by Small Angle X-ray scattering
We study the structure of carboxylic acid terminated neutral poly (propyl
ether imine) (PETIM) dendrimer from generation 1 through 6 (G1-G6) in a good
solvent (water) by fully atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. We
determine as a function of generation such structural properties as: radius of
gyration, shape tensor, asphericity, fractal dimension, monomer density
distribution, and end-group distribution functions. The sizes obtained from the
MD simulations have been validated by Small Angle X-Ray Scattering (SAXS)
experiment on dendrimer of generation 2 to 4 (G2-G4). A good agreement between
the experimental and theoretical value of radius of gyration has been observed.
We find a linear increase in radius of gyration with the generation. In
contrast, Rg scales as ~ N^x with the number of monomers. We find two distinct
exponents depending on the generations: x = 0.47 for G1-G3 and x = 0.28 for
G3-G6 which reveals their non-space filling nature. In comparison with the
amine terminated PAMAM dendrimer, we find Rg of G-th generation PETIM dendrimer
is nearly equal to that of (G+1)-th generation of PAMAM dendrimer as observed
by Maiti et. al. [Macromolecules,38, 979 2005]. We find substantial back
folding of the outer sub generations into the interior of the dendrimer. Due to
their highly flexible nature of the repeating branch units, the shape of the
PETIM dendrimer deviates significantly from the spherical shape and the
molecules become more and more spherical as the generation increases. The
interior of the dendrimer is quite open with internal cavities available for
accommodating guest molecules suggesting using PETIM dendrimer for guest-host
applications. We also give a quantitative measure of the number of water
molecules present inside the dendrimer.Comment: 33 page
Benefit sharing in the value chain of Indian mackerel Rastrelliger kanagurta in Karnataka: A policy perspective
Harvest and post-harvest activities in a multispecies multifleet unregulated marine fishery is highly complex involving a large number of intermediaries. The real economic benefits from fishing are often skewed in the hands of a few intermediaries in the value chain. Equitable distribution of benefits is an essential component for ensuring sustainable exploitation and management in the context of ecosystem based management of marine fisheries. The present study analysed the market linkages and benefit sharing by different stakeholders in the value chain of Indian mackerel in Karnataka, south-west coast of India. Results of the study indicated that in terms of individual benefits, export processing and canning sectors in Karnataka grabbed a significant share in the Indian mackerel value chain and suggests a revisit into the policy on export incentives for Indian mackerel, in order to ensure equitable distribution of benefits among the stakeholders as well as to protect the interests of domestic consumers
