Linking Ultracold Polar Molecules
We predict that pairs of polar molecules can be weakly bound together in an
ultracold environment, provided that a dc electric field is present. The field
that links the molecules together also strongly influences the basic properties
of the resulting dimer, such as its binding energy and predissociation
lifetime. Because of their long-range character these dimers will be useful in
disentangling cold collision dynamics of polar molecules. As an example, we
estimate the microwave photoassociation yield for OH-OH cold collisions.Comment: 4 pages 2 figure
A feasibility study for the retrieval of the total column precipitable water vapour from satellite observations in the blue spectral range
We present a new algorithm for satellite retrievals of the atmospheric water vapour column in the blue spectral range. The water vapour absorption cross section in the blue spectral range is much weaker than in the red spectral range. Thus the detection limit and the uncertainty of individual observations are systematically larger than for retrievals at longer wavelengths. Nevertheless, water vapour retrievals in the blue spectral range have also several advantages: since the surface albedo in the blue spectral range is similar over land and ocean, water vapour retrievals are more consistent than for longer wavelengths. Compared to retrievals at longer wavelengths, the sensitivity for atmospheric layers close to the surface is higher due to the (typically 2 to 3 times) higher ocean albedo in the blue. Water vapour retrievals in the blue spectral range are also possible for satellite sensors, which do not measure at longer wavelengths of the visible spectral range like the Ozone Monitoring Instrument (OMI). We investigated details of the water vapour retrieval in the blue spectral range based on radiative transfer simulations and observations from the Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment 2 (GOME-2) and OMI. It is demonstrated that it is possible to retrieve the atmospheric water vapour column density in the blue spectral range over most parts of the globe. The findings of our study are of importance also for future satellite missions (e.g. Sentinel 4 and 5)

Generalized Pseudopotentials for Higher Partial Wave Scattering
We derive a generalized zero-range pseudopotential applicable to all partial
wave solutions to the Schroedinger equation based on a delta-shell potential in
the limit that the shell radius approaches zero. This properly models all
higher order multipole moments not accounted for with a monopolar delta
function at the origin, as used in the familiar Fermi pseudopotential for
s-wave scattering. By making the strength of the potential energy dependent, we
derive self-consistent solutions for the entire energy spectrum of the
realistic potential. We apply this to study two particles in an isotropic
harmonic trap, interacting through a central potential, and derive analytic
expressions for the energy eigenstates and eigenvalues.Comment: RevTeX 4 pages, 1 figure, final published versio
Feshbach spectroscopy and analysis of the interaction potentials of ultracold sodium
We have studied magnetic Feshbach resonances in an ultracold sample of Na
prepared in the absolute hyperfine ground state. We report on the observation
of three s-, eight d-, and three g-wave Feshbach resonances, including a more
precise determination of two known s-wave resonances, and one s-wave resonance
at a magnetic field exceeding 200mT. Using a coupled-channels calculation we
have improved the sodium ground-state potentials by taking into account these
new experimental data, and derived values for the scattering lengths. In
addition, a description of the molecular states leading to the Feshbach
resonances in terms of the asymptotic-bound-state model is presented.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
Service Platform for Converged Interactive Broadband Broadcast and Cellular Wireless
A converged broadcast and telecommunication
service platform is presented that is able to create, deliver, and
manage interactive, multimedia content and services for consumption
on three different terminal types. The motivations of
service providers for designing converged interactive multimedia
services, which are crafted for their individual requirements, are
investigated. The overall design of the system is presented with
particular emphasis placed on the operational features of each
of the sub-systems, the flows of media and metadata through the
sub-systems and the formats and protocols required for inter-communication
between them. The key features of tools required for
creating converged interactive multimedia content for a range of
different end-user terminal types are examined. Finally possible
enhancements to this system are discussed. This study is of particular
interest to those organizations currently conducting trials
and commercial launches of DVB-H services because it provides
them with an insight of the various additional functions required
in the service provisioning platforms to provide fully interactive
services to a range of different mobile terminal types
Tree-body loss of of trapped ultracold Rb atoms due to a Feshbach resonance
The loss of ultracold trapped atoms in the vicinity of a Feshbach resonance
is treated as a two-stage reaction, using the Breit-Wigner theory. The first
stage is the formation of a resonant diatomic molecule, and the second one is
its deactivation by inelastic collisions with other atoms. This model is
applied to the analysis of recent experiments on Rb, leading to an
estimated value of cms for the deactivation rate
coefficient.Comment: LaTeX, 4 pages with 1 figures, uses REVTeX4, uses improved

Resonance structures in the multichannel quantum defect theory for the photofragmentation processes involving one closed and many open channels
The transformation introduced by Giusti-Suzor and Fano and extended by
Lecomte and Ueda for the study of resonance structures in the multichannel
quantum defect theory (MQDT) is used to reformulate MQDT into the forms having
one-to-one correspondence with those in Fano's configuration mixing (CM) theory
of resonance for the photofragmentation processes involving one closed and many
open channels. The reformulation thus allows MQDT to have the full power of the
CM theory, still keeping its own strengths such as the fundamental description
of resonance phenomena without an assumption of the presence of a discrete
state as in CM.Comment: 7 page

Strongly phosphorescent transition metal Ï complexes of boron-boron triple bonds
Herein are reported the first Ï complexes of compounds with boron-boron triple bonds to transition metals, in this case CuI. Three different compounds were isolated that differ in the number of copper atoms bound to the BB unit. Metallation of the B-B triple bonds causes significant lengthening of the B-B and B-CNHC bonds, as well as large upfield shifts of the 11B NMR signals, suggesting greater orbital interactions between the boron and transition metal atoms than those observed with recently published diboryne / alkali metal cation complexes. In contrast to previously-reported fluorescent copper(I) Ï complexes of boron-boron double bonds, the Cun-Ï-diboryne compounds (n = 2, 3) show intense phosphorescence in the red to near-IR region from their triplet excited states, according to their microsecond lifetimes, with quantum yields of up to 58%. The bonding situation, as well as the unusual photophysical properties, has been further corroborated by DFT studies
Pseudopotential model of ultracold atomic collisions in quasi-one- and two-dimensional traps
We describe a model for s-wave collisions between ground state atoms in
optical lattices, considering especially the limits of quasi-one and two
dimensional axisymmetric harmonic confinement. When the atomic interactions are
modelled by an s-wave Fermi-pseudopotential, the relative motion energy
eigenvalues can easily be obtained. The results show that except for a bound
state, the trap eigenvalues are consistent with one- and two- dimensional
scattering with renormalized scattering amplitudes. For absolute scattering
lengths large compared with the tightest trap width, our model predicts a novel
bound state of low energy and nearly-isotropic wavefunction extending on the
order of the tightest trap width.Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures; submitted to Phys. Rev.
