Effects of Fe2O3 addition on the nitridation of silicon powder
The reaction of silicon powder and nitrogen was studied in the range of 1300-1400 C. When an addition of Fe2O3 was more than 0.8wt%, the reaction was linear and compared to samples with no Fe2O3, the reaction velocity increased 5 to 10 times. The reactions were mediated by the process of peeling and cracking in a thin layer of Si2N4 formed on the silicon particles or on the surface of the Fe-Si melts. As the addition of Fe2O3 increased, the reaction activation energy for highly pure samples decreased. Fe2O3 which exceeded the Si3N4 solubility limits was finally converted to d-Fe
Conical Singular Solutions in (2+1)-Dimensional Gravity Employing the ADM Canonical Formalism
Topological solutions in the (2+1)-dimensional Einstein theory of gravity are
studied within the ADM canonical formalism. It is found that a conical
singularity appears in the closed de Sitter universe solution as a topological
defect in the case of the Einstein theory with a cosmological constant. Quantum
effects on the conical singularity are studied using the de Broglie-Bohm
interpretation. Finite quantum tunneling effects are obtained for the closed de
Sitter universe, while no quantum effects are obtained for an open universe.Comment: 15 pages, 3 figure
Healthcare Utilization Among Hispanic Immigrants with Diabetes: Investigating the Effect of US Documentation Status
Previous studies have not examined whether documentation status has an effect on healthcare utilization among US Hispanic immigrants with diabetes. A secondary analysis was conducted using data from the Pew Hispanic Center and Robert Johnson Wood Foundationâs 2007 Hispanic Healthcare Survey. Hispanic immigrants diagnosed with diabetes were included in analyses. The association between documentation status and healthcare utilization was assessed using logistic regressions. Of N = 577 Hispanic immigrants with diabetes, 80 % were documented immigrants and 81 % reported having visited a healthcare provider in the last 6 months. Adjusting for confounders, those who were undocumented faced higher odds of having seen a healthcare provider more than 6 months ago or never when compared to those who were documented (OR = 1.79; 95 % CI 1.01, 3.14). Unique opportunities in addressing healthcare disparities can be found in focusing on the Hispanic immigrant population living with diabetes
Global well-posedness of the Kirchhoff equation and Kirchhoff systems
This article is devoted to review the known results on global well-posedness
for the Cauchy problem to the Kirchhoff equation and Kirchhoff systems with
small data. Similar results will be obtained for the initial-boundary value
problems in exterior domains with compact boundary. Also, the known results on

A feasibility study for advanced technology integration for general aviation
An investigation was conducted to identify candidate technologies and specific developments which offer greatest promise for improving safety, fuel efficiency, performance, and utility of general aviation airplanes. Interviews were conducted with general aviation airframe and systems manufacturers and NASA research centers. The following technologies were evaluated for use in airplane design tradeoff studies conducted during the study: avionics, aerodynamics, configurations, structures, flight controls, and propulsion. Based on industry interviews and design tradeoff studies, several recommendations were made for further high payoff research. The most attractive technologies for use by the general aviation industry appear to be advanced engines, composite materials, natural laminar flow airfoils, and advanced integrated avionics systems. The integration of these technologies in airplane design can yield significant increases in speeds, ranges, and payloads over present aircraft with 40 percent to 50 percent reductions in fuel used
Magnetic Domain Observation using Spin-Polarized Scanning Electron Microscopy
A new apparatus, spin-polarized scanning electron microscope (SEM), has been developed. This is a unique apparatus, which forms images by electron spin polarization. By using this device, magnetic domain images can be obtained because secondary electrons from ferromagnetic samples are polarized representing the magnetization of the sample originating point. This method provides new capabilities, such as magnetic contrast independent of surface morphology, detection of magnetization direction, and high spatial resolution
Quasi-Local Formulation of Non-Abelian Finite-Element Gauge Theory
Recently it was shown how to formulate the finite-element equations of motion
of a non-Abelian gauge theory, by gauging the free lattice difference
equations, and simultaneously determining the form of the gauge
transformations. In particular, the gauge-covariant field strength was
explicitly constructed, locally, in terms of a path ordered product of
exponentials (link operators). On the other hand, the Dirac and Yang-Mills
equations were nonlocal, involving sums over the entire prior lattice. Earlier,
Matsuyama had proposed a local Dirac equation constructed from just the
above-mentioned link operators. Here, we show how his scheme, which is closely
related to our earlier one, can be implemented for a non-Abelian gauge theory.
Although both Dirac and Yang-Mills equations are now local, the field strength
is not. The technique is illustrated with a direct calculation of the current
anomalies in two and four space-time dimensions. Unfortunately, unlike the
