NuSTAR Observations of G11.2â0.3
We present in this paper the hard X-ray view of the pulsar wind nebula in G11.2â0.3 and its central pulsar powered pulsar J1811â1925 as seen by NuSTAR. We complement the data with Chandra for a more complete picture and confirm the existence of a hard, power-law component in the shell with photon index Î = 2.1 ± 0.1, which we attribute to synchrotron emission. Our imaging observations of the shell show a slightly smaller radius at higher energies, consistent with Chandra results, and we find shrinkage as a function of increased energy along the jet direction, indicating that the electron outflow in the PWN may be simpler than that seen in other young PWNe. Combining NuSTAR with INTEGRAL, we find that the pulsar spectrum can be fit by a power law with Î = 1.32 ± 0.07 up to 300 keV without evidence of curvature
On the lack of X-ray iron line reverberation in MCG-6-30-15: Implications for the black hole mass and accretion disk structure
We use the method of Press, Rybicki & Hewitt (1992) to search for time lags
and time leads between different energy bands of the RXTE data for MCG-6-30-15.
We tailor our search in order to probe any reverberation signatures of the
fluorescent iron Kalpha line that is thought to arise from the inner regions of
the black hole accretion disk. In essence, an optimal reconstruction algorithm
is applied to the continuum band (2-4keV) light curve which smoothes out noise
and interpolates across the data gaps. The reconstructed continuum band light
curve can then be folded through trial transfer functions in an attempt to find
lags or leads between the continuum band and the iron line band (5-7keV). We
find reduced fractional variability in the line band. The spectral analysis of
Lee et al. (1999) reveals this to be due to a combination of an apparently
constant iron line flux (at least on timescales of few x 10^4s), and flux
correlated changes in the photon index. We also find no evidence for iron line
reverberation and exclude reverberation delays in the range 0.5-50ksec. This
extends the conclusions of Lee et al. and suggests that the iron line flux
remains constant on timescales as short as 0.5ksec. The large black hole mass
(>10^8Msun) naively suggested by the constancy of the iron line flux is
rejected on other grounds. We suggest that the black hole in MCG-6-30-15 has a
mass of M_BH~10^6-10^7Msun and that changes in the ionization state of the disk
may produce the puzzling spectral variability. Finally, it is found that the
8-15keV band lags the 2-4keV band by 50-100s. This result is used to place
constraints on the size and geometry of the Comptonizing medium responsible for

The effect of within-crop habitat manipulations on the conservation biological control of aphids in field-grown lettuce
Within-crop habitat manipulations have the potential to increase the biological
control of pests in horticultural field crops. Wildflower strips have been shown to
increase the abundance of natural enemies, but there is little evidence to date of an
impact on pest populations. The aim of this study was to determine whether withincrop
wildflower strips can increase the natural regulation of pests in horticultural
field crops. Aphid numbers in plots of lettuce grown adjacent to wildflower strips
were compared with those in plots grown in the absence of wildflowers. The presence
of wildflower strips led to a decrease in aphid numbers on adjacent lettuce plants
during June and July, but had less impact in August and September. The decrease in
aphid numbers was greatest close to the wildflower strips and, the decrease in aphid
numbers declined with increasing distance from the wildflower strips, with little
effect at a distance of ten metres. The main natural enemies found in the crop were
those that dispersed aerially, which is consistent with data from previous studies on
cereal crops. Analysis and interpretation of natural enemy numbers was difficult due
to low recovery of natural enemies, and the numbers appeared to follow changes in
aphid abundance rather than being directly linked to the presence of wildflower
strips. Cutting the wildflower strips, to remove floral resources, had no impact on the
reduction in aphid numbers achieved during June and July, but decreased the effect
of the wildflower strips during August and September. The results suggest that
wildflower strips can lead to increased natural regulation of pest aphids in outdoor
lettuce crops, but more research is required to determine how this is mediated by
natural enemies and how the impact of wildflower strips on natural pest regulation
changes during the growing season
The effect of disgust and fear modeling on childrenâs disgust and fear for animals
Disgust is a protective emotion associated with certain types of animal fears. Given that a primary function of disgust is to protect against harm, increasing childrenâs disgust-related beliefs for animals may affect how threatening they think animals are and their avoidance of them. One way that childrenâs disgust beliefs for animals might change is via vicarious learning: by observing others responding to the animal with disgust. In Experiment 1, children (ages 7â10 years) were presented with images of novel animals together with adult faces expressing disgust. Childrenâs fear beliefs and avoidance preferences increased for these disgust-paired animals compared with unpaired control animals. Experiment 2 used the same procedure and compared disgust vicarious learning with vicarious learning with fear faces. Childrenâs fear beliefs and avoidance preferences for animals again increased as a result of disgust vicarious learning, and animals seen with disgust or fear faces were also rated more disgusting than control animals. The relationship between increased fear beliefs and avoidance preferences for animals was mediated by disgust for the animals. The experiments demonstrate that children can learn to believe that animals are disgusting and threatening after observing an adult responding with disgust toward them. The findings also suggest a bidirectional relationship between fear and disgust with fear-related vicarious learning leading to increased disgust for animals and disgust-related vicarious learning leading to increased fear and avoidance

Understanding Consumer Behaviour for Social Change: An Empirical Investigation of Neutralisation Techniques in the UK
yesThe paper explores the discrepancy between attitude and behavioural intention in ethical consumption, focusing on the role of techniques of neutralisation. Drawing on findings of 251 respondents in the UK, results suggest despite positive attitude towards ethical consumption, consumers are also susceptible to the techniques of neutralisation. Hierarchical and moderated regression analyses reveal that inclusion of the neutralisation construct moderates the influences of attitudes on behavioural intention, and advances the modelâs predictive capacity. In spite of suggested positive attitude towards ethical consumption, real existing behaviour is frequently filtered through the techniques of neutralisation. The sample is restricted to in size and location, however the study clearly establishes techniques of neutralisation as a construct in the decision-making process, further warranting examination of each of the techniques. Summary statement of contribution: The study confirms validity of the addition of the neutralisation construct into the modified TPB model noted by Chatzidakis et al. (2007). It suggests improvement in predicting behavioural intention and shows the moderating effects the techniques of neutralisation have on constructs in the modified TPB model. The neutralisation construct is itself found to have a significant impact on moderating purchasing intention in ethical consumption
Sinking properties of some phytoplankton shapes and the relation of form resistance to morphological diversity of plankton â an experimental study
Form resistance (Phi) is a dimensionless number expressing how much slower or faster a particle of any form sinks in a fluid medium than the sphere of equivalent volume. Form resistance factors of PVC models of phytoplankton sinking in glycerin were measured in a large aquarium (0.6 x 0.6 x 0.95 m). For cylindrical forms, a positive relationship was found between Phi and length/ width ratio. Coiling decreased Phi in filamentous forms. Form resistance of Asterionella colonies increased from single cells up to 6-celled colonies than remained nearly constant. For Fragilaria crotonensis chains, no such upper limit to Phi was observed in chains of up to 20 cells ( longer ones were not measured). The effect of symmetry on Phi was tested in 1 - 6-celled Asterionella colonies, having variable angles between the cells, and in Tetrastrum staurogeniaeforme coenobia, having different spine arrangements. In all cases, symmetric forms had considerably higher form resistance than asymmetric ones. However, for Pediastrum coenobia with symmetric/asymmetric fenestration, no difference was observed with respect to symmetry. Increasing number and length of spines on Tetrastrum coenobia substantially increased Phi. For a series of Staurastrum forms, a significant positive correlation was found between arm-length/cell-width ratio and Phi: protuberances increased form resistance. Flagellates (Rhodomonas, Gymnodinium) had a Phi 1. The highest value ( Phi = 8.1) was established for a 20-celled Fragilaria crotonensis chain. Possible origin of the so-called 'vital component' ( a factor that shows how much slower viable populations sink than morphologically similar senescent or dead ones) is discussed, as is the role of form resistance in evolution of high diversity of plankton morphologies
Solvation of Ions. II. Use of a Variable Solvation Number for K+
Gibbs free energies of transfer of K(I) ion from water to water-dimethyl sulfoxide mixtures corrected to zero ionic strength have been used to deduce information concerning states of solvation of K+ ion in the purely aqueous phase and in the mixed solvent phase. It was found that the largest number of water molecules which needed to be assigned to the solvent cage of K+ was 11 in either phase. The partition equilibrium constant, /?0, for the distribution of K(H20)H+ between the two phases was found as a function of the mole fraction of dimethyl sulfoxide in the mixed solvent phase. The largest number of dimethyl sulfoxide molecules which needed to be assigned to the solvent cage was 10. The number of solvent molecules in the solvent cage was allowed to be variable and the overall formation constants of all K(H20)j((CH3)2S0)k+ ions contributing to the free energy of transfer were determined. The results are compared with the results from molecular dynamics computer simulations for K+ where possible
