    Une nouvelle méthode de codage des signaux audio génériques est présentée, à un débit de 64 kbit/s dans la bande de fréquence 20-15000 Hz, avec un faible délai. Cette méthode se base sur un codage en sous-bandes associé au LD-CELP ainsi qu'à des bancs de filtres cascadés. Des travaux initiaux [1] montrent que, lorsqu'un débit de 16 kbit/s est alloué à chaque sous-bande, la qualité audio n'est pas satisfaisante. Nous proposons un nouvel algorithme basé sur la quantification en réseau de points afin de pallier la complexité de la quantification vectorielle statistique. La souplesse du système permet d'effectuer une allocation binaire dynamique dans chaque sous-bande. Des résultats expérimentaux sont présentés et évaluent la validité de la méthode proposée

    Dispelling the myths of online education: learning via the information superhighway

    There continues to be a perception that online education is inferior to traditional education. In the U.S. online learning is more developed than in the U.K. This paper provides insights into a U.S. provision and takes a close look at what are perceived as weaknesses of on line learning and argues that these are not necessarily inherent weaknesses of this form of educational delivery. Then, results of two major studies, undertaken in the U.S. are provided comparing the effectiveness of online education to traditional education as perceived by current MBA students and past graduates. Results of these studies suggest that students of MBA modules and MBA graduates perceive the quality and effectiveness of online education to be similar to, if not higher than, the quality and effectiveness of traditional modules and programmes

    Further development of the 12-item EDEQS: identifying a cut-off for screening purposes

    Background: The Eating Disorder Examination – Questionnaire Short (EDE-QS) was developed as a 12-item versionof the Eating Disorder Examination Questionnaire (EDE-Q) with a 4-point response scale that assesses eatingdisorder (ED) symptoms over the preceding 7 days. It has demonstrated good psychometric properties at initialtesting. The purpose of this brief report is to determine a threshold score that could be used in screening forprobable ED cases in community settings.Methods: Data collected from Gideon et al. (2016) were re-analyzed. In their study, 559 participants (80.86% female;9.66% self-reported ED diagnosis) completed the EDE-Q, EDE-QS, SCOFF, and Clinical Impairment Assessment (CIA).Discriminatory power was compared between ED instruments using receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curveanalyses.Results: A score of 15 emerged as the threshold that ensured the best trade-off between sensitivity (.83) andspecificity (.85), and good positive predictive value (.37) for the EDE-QS, with discriminatory power comparable toother ED instruments.Conclusion: The EDE-QS appears to be an instrument with good discriminatory power that could be used for EDscreening purposes

    Effects of temperature and salinity on the growth of Alexandrium (Dinophyceae) isolates from the Salish Sea

The definitive version was published in Journal of Phycology 52 (2016): 230–238, doi:10.1111/jpy.12386.Toxin-producing blooms of dinoflagellates in the genus Alexandrium have plagued the inhabitants of the Salish Sea for centuries. Yet the environmental conditions that promote accelerated growth of this organism, a producer of paralytic shellfish toxins, is lacking. This study quantitatively determined the growth response of two Alexandrium isolates to a range of temperatures and salinities, factors that will strongly respond to future climate change scenarios. An empirical equation, derived from observed growth rates describing the temperature and salinity dependence of growth, was used to hindcast bloom risk. Hindcasting was achieved by comparing predicted growth rates, calculated from in situ temperature and salinity data from Quartermaster Harbor, with corresponding Alexandrium cell counts and shellfish toxin data. The greatest bloom risk, defined at μ >0.25 d−1, generally occurred from April through November annually; however, growth rates rarely fell below 0.10 d−1. Except for a few occasions, Alexandrium cells were only observed during the periods of highest bloom risk and paralytic shellfish toxins above the regulatory limit always fell within the periods of predicted bloom occurrence. While acknowledging that Alexandrium growth rates are affected by other abiotic and biotic factors, such as grazing pressure and nutrient availability, the use of this empirical growth function to predict higher risk time frames for blooms and toxic shellfish within the Salish Sea provides the groundwork for a more comprehensive biological model of Alexandrium bloom dynamics in the region and will enhance our ability to forecast blooms in the Salish Sea under future climate change scenarios.NOAA Ecology and Oceanography of Harmful Algal Bloom (ECOHAB) Program; Woods Hole Center for Oceans and Human Health; National Science Foundation Grant Number: OCE-1314642; National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences Grant Number: 1-P01-ES021923-0
