    A tandem S_NAr/5-exo-trig cyclization reaction is reported that converts N-alkyl- and -arylimines derived from o-fluorobenzaldehydes into 3-amino-2,3-dihydro-2,2-diarylbenzofurans in moderate to good yields. Diarylmethoxide coupling partners serve the dual role of nucleophile in the S_NAr step and catalytic base in the cyclization step. With a subset of the substrates, a further base-induced elimination of the 3-amino-2,3-dihydro-2,2-diarylbenzofuran to a phenolic enamine was observed

    We propose a new coherent state quantum key distribution protocol that eliminates the need to randomly switch between measurement bases. This protocol provides significantly higher secret key rates with increased bandwidths than previous schemes that only make single quadrature measurements.     Quantum optical states which have no coherent amplitude, such as squeezed vacuum states, can not rely on standard readout techniques to generate error signals for control of the quadrature phase. Here we investigate the use of asymmetry in the quadrature variances to obtain a phase-sensitive readout and to lock the phase of a squeezed vacuum state, a technique which we call noise locking (NL). We carry out a theoretical derivation of the NL error signal and the associated stability of the squeezed and anti-squeezed lock points. Experimental data for the NL technique both in the presence and absence of coherent fields are shown, including a comparison with coherent locking techniques.     Pallidal Deep Brain Stimulation Reduces Sensorimotor Cortex Activation in Focal/Segmental Dystonia

    Background Although deep brain stimulation of the globus pallidus internus (GPi-DBS) is an established treatment for many forms of dystonia, including generalized as well as focal forms, its effects on brain (dys-)function remain to be elucidated, particularly for focal and segmental dystonia. Clinical response to GPi-DBS typically comes with some delay and lasts up to several days, sometimes even weeks, once stimulation is discontinued. Objective This study investigated how neural activity during rest and motor activation is affected by GPi-DBS while excluding the potential confound of altered feedback as a result of therapy-induced differences in dystonic muscle contractions. Methods Two groups of patients with focal or segmental dystonia were included in the study: 6 patients with GPi-DBS and 8 without DBS (control group). All 14 patients had cervical dystonia. Using (H2O)-O-15 PET, regional cerebral blood flow was measured at rest and during a motor task performed with a nondystonic hand. Results In patients with GPi-DBS (stimulation ON and OFF), activity at rest was reduced in a prefrontal network, and during the motor task, sensorimotor cortex activity was lower than in patients without DBS. Within-group contrasts (tapping > rest) showed less extensive task-induced motor network activation in GPi-DBS patients than in non-DBS controls. Reduced sensorimotor activation amounted to a significant group-by-task interaction only in the stimulation ON state. Conclusions These findings support previous observations in generalized dystonia that suggested that GPi-DBS normalizes dystonia-associated sensorimotor and prefrontal hyperactivity, indicating similar mechanisms in generalized and focal or segmental dystonia. Evidence is provided that these effects extend into the OFF state, which was not previously demonstrated by neuroimaging. (c) 2020 The Authors.     Experimental demonstration of a squeezing enhanced power recycled Michelson interferometer for gravitational wave detection

    Interferometric gravitational wave detectors are expected to be limited by shot noise at some frequencies. We experimentally demonstrate that a power recycled Michelson with squeezed light injected into the dark port can overcome this limit. An improvement in the signal-to-noise ratio of 2.3dB is measured and locked stably for long periods of time. The configuration, control and signal readout of our experiment are compatible with current gravitational wave detector designs. We consider the application of our system to long baseline interferometer designs such as LIGO.Comment: 4 pages 4 figure

    Evaluation of the composition, properties and fertility of Haplic Ferralsol on the fields abandoned for five years in the Republic of Chad

    The article deals with the fertility of red ferralitic soils in the Republic of Chad. The studies were carried out in the period between 2016 and 2018 in the southern part of the province of Moundou on the red ferralitic soils (Haplic Ferralsol)of the Cotton-Chad farm, which cultivates cotton first of its formation. Haplic Ferralsols are characterized by significant reservoir thickness and are not rich in nutrients. The aim of our research was to study the composition and properties of the Haplic Ferralsols of the fields abandoned for five years for their use under cotton export culture. We have evaluated the morphological structure of the soil on neglected fields and its description by genetic horizons, studied the particle size distribution of the soil profile, its gross composition, cation exchange capacity, the content of exchangeable cations, and also considered the agrochemical and agrophysical properties of soil horizons. It has been established that Haplic Ferralsols have their own characteristics: red color, thick soil profile and a gradual transition between genetic horizons, and lightweight granulometric composition in the upper part of the profile. The basis of the gross chemical composition of Haplic Ferralsols is SiO2, Fe2O3 and Al2O3, the content of which varies depending on the depth of the soil profile within the ranges of 61.83–82.73 %, 3.50–6.40 % and 11.46–29.25 % correspondingly. Haplic Ferralsols are characterized by a high cation exchange capacity (6.6–11.1 сmol (eq)/kg). Among the exchangeable cations, calcium (Ca2+) is the most essential. Haplic Ferralsols are moderately provided with humus. In the upper soil layers (up to 42 cm), its content varied within 1.53–1.66 %. Soils are characterized by acidic reactions – from moderately acidic in the upper horizons to very strongly acidic in the lower horizon. The content of mobile compounds of phosphorus and potassium in the profile is low and very low, respectively, 0.76–1.09 mg/100 g and 0.05–1.48 mg/100 g. According to its agrophysical properties, the soil may be used for cotton growing. In the upper soil layer (0–42 cm) the bulk density is 1.36–1.45 g/cm3, the total porosity is 45.9–48.9 % and the field water-holding capacity is 22.4–25.7 %

    A Fibreoptic Endoscopic Study of Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding at Bugando Medical Centre in Northwestern Tanzania: a Retrospective Review of 240 Cases.

    Upper gastrointestinal (GI) bleeding is recognized as a common and potentially life-threatening abdominal emergency that needs a prompt assessment and aggressive emergency treatment. A retrospective study was undertaken at Bugando Medical Centre in northwestern Tanzania between March 2010 and September 2011 to describe our own experiences with fibreoptic upper GI endoscopy in the management of patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding in our setting and compare our results with those from other centers in the world. A total of 240 patients representing 18.7% of all patients (i.e. 1292) who had fibreoptic upper GI endoscopy during the study period were studied. Males outnumbered female by a ratio of 2.1:1. Their median age was 37 years and most of patients (60.0%) were aged 40 years and below. The vast majority of the patients (80.4%) presented with haematemesis alone followed by malaena alone in 9.2% of cases. The use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, alcohol and smoking prior to the onset of bleeding was recorded in 7.9%, 51.7% and 38.3% of cases respectively. Previous history of peptic ulcer disease was reported in 22(9.2%) patients. Nine (3.8%) patients were HIV positive. The source of bleeding was accurately identified in 97.7% of patients. Diagnostic accuracy was greater within the first 24 h of the bleeding onset, and in the presence of haematemesis. Oesophageal varices were the most frequent cause of upper GI bleeding (51.3%) followed by peptic ulcers in 25.0% of cases. The majority of patients (60.8%) were treated conservatively. Endoscopic and surgical treatments were performed in 30.8% and 5.8% of cases respectively. 140 (58.3%) patients received blood transfusion. The median length of hospitalization was 8 days and it was significantly longer in patients who underwent surgical treatment and those with higher Rockall scores (P < 0.001). Rebleeding was reported in 3.3% of the patients. The overall mortality rate of 11.7% was significantly higher in patients with variceal bleeding, shock, hepatic decompensation, HIV infection, comorbidities, malignancy, age > 60 years and in patients with higher Rockall scores and those who underwent surgery (P < 0.001). Oesophageal varices are the commonest cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding in our environment and it is associated with high morbidity and mortality. The diagnostic accuracy of fibreoptic endoscopy was related to the time interval between the onset of bleeding and endoscopy. Therefore, it is recommended that early endoscopy should be performed within 24 h of the onset of bleeding

    Super-transport of Excitons in Atomically Thin Organic Semiconductors at the 2D Quantum Limit

    Long-range and fast transport of coherent excitons is important for development of high-speed excitonic circuits and quantum computing applications. However, most of these coherent excitons have only been observed in some low-dimensional semiconductors when coupled with cavities, as there are large inhomogeneous broadening and dephasing effects on the exciton transport in their native states of the materials. Here, by confining coherent excitons at the 2D quantum limit, we firstly observed molecular aggregation enabled super-transport of excitons in atomically thin two-dimensional (2D) organic semiconductors between coherent states, with a measured a high effective exciton diffusion coefficient of 346.9 cm2/sec at room temperature. This value is one to several orders of magnitude higher than the reported values from other organic molecular aggregates and low-dimensional inorganic materials. Without coupling to any optical cavities, the monolayer pentacene sample, a very clean 2D quantum system (1.2 nm thick) with high crystallinity (J type aggregation) and minimal interfacial states, showed superradiant emissions from the Frenkel excitons, which was experimentally confirmed by the temperature-dependent photoluminescence (PL) emission, highly enhanced radiative decay rate, significantly narrowed PL peak width and strongly directional in-plane emission. The coherence in monolayer pentacene samples was observed to be delocalized over 135 molecules, which is significantly larger than the values (a few molecules) observed from other organic thin films. In addition, the super-transport of excitons in monolayer pentacene samples showed highly anisotropic behaviour. Our results pave the way for the development of future high-speed excitonic circuits, fast OLEDs, and other opto-electronic devices

    Differential Cathelicidin Expression in Duodenal and Gastric Biopsies from Tanzanian and German Patients

    Epithelial surfaces such as the gastrointestinal mucosa depend on expression of antimicrobial peptides like cathelicidin for immune defence against pathogens. The mechanisms behind mucosal cathelicidin regulation are incompletely understood. Cathelicidin expression was analysed in duodenal, antral and corpus/fundic mucosal biopsies from African and German patients. Additionally, cathelicidin expression was correlated with Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and the inflammatory status of the mucosa. High cathelicidin transcript abundance was detected in duodenal biopsies from African subjects. On the contrary, cathelicidin mRNA expression was either undetectable or very low in tissue specimens from German patients. Also, in the antrum and corpus/fundus regions of the stomach significantly higher cathelicidin transcript levels were measured in Tanzanian compared to German patients. In gastric biopsies from African patients cathelicidin expression was increased in HP positive compared to HP negative subjects. Additionally, the inflammatory status measured by IL-8 expression correlated well with the HP infection status. A higher duodenal and gastric cathelicidin expression in African (compared with European) individuals may be due to upregulation by antigenic stimulation and may confer a higher resistance against enteric infections
