    Survey of the Attelabidae of Wisconsin (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea)

    A statewide survey of Wisconsin’s Attelabidae (Coleoptera: Curculionoidea) was conducted over one full (2012) and two partial (2011, 2013) field seasons. Specimens were collected using a variety of techniques. Fourteen species of Attelabidae in nine genera placed in two subfamilies are now recorded from Wisconsin, with five new state species records and 117 new Wisconsin county records. Generic and species-level keys for Wisconsin attelabid species are provided along with generic and species diagnoses. Species treatments also include a synonymy, a description, and information on natural history, phenology, distribution and collecting methods. Dorsal and lateral habitus images are also provided for each species

    HPDL Remelting of Anodised Al-Si-Cu Cast Alloys Surfaces

    The results of the investigations of the laser remelting of the AlSi9Cu4 cast aluminium alloy with the anodised and non-anodised surfacelayer and hardness changes have been presented in this paper. The surface layer of the tested aluminium samples was remelted with thelaser of a continuous work. The power density was from 8,17•103 W/cm2 to 1,63•104 W/cm2. The metallographic tests were conducted inform of light microscope investigations of the received surface layer. The main goal of the investigation was to find the relation betweenthe laser beam power and its power density falling on a material, evaluating the shape and geometry of the remelted layers and theirhardness. As the substrate material two types of surfaces of the casted AlSi9Cu4 alloy were applied – the non–treated as cast surface aswell the anodized surface. As a device for this type of surface laser treatment the High Power Diode Laser was applied with a maximumpower of 2.2 kW and the dimensions of the laser beam focus of 1.8 x 6.8 mm. By mind of such treatment it is also possible to increasehardness as well eliminate porosity and develop metallurgical bonding at the coating-substrate interface. Suitable operating conditions forHPDL laser treatment were finally determined, ranging from 1.0 to 2.0 kW. Under such conditions, taking into account the absorptionvalue, the effects of laser remelting on the surface shape and roughness were studied. The results show that surface roughness is reducedwith increasing laser power by the remelting process only for the non-anodised samples, and high porosity can be found in the with highpower remelted areas. The laser influence increases with the heat input of the laser processing as well with the anodisation of the surface,because of the absorption enhancement ensured through the obtained alumina layer

    Stationary states for underdamped anharmonic oscillators driven by Cauchy noise

    Using methods of stochastic dynamics, we have studied stationary states in the underdamped anharmonic stochastic oscillators driven by Cauchy noise. Shape of stationary states depend both on the potential type and the damping. If the damping is strong enough, for potential wells which in the overdamped regime produce multimodal stationary states, stationary states in the underdamped regime can be multimodal with the same number of modes like in the overdamped regime. For the parabolic potential, the stationary density is always unimodal and it is given by the two dimensional α\alpha-stable density. For the mixture of quartic and parabolic single-well potentials the stationary density can be bimodal. Nevertheless, the parabolic addition, which is strong enough, can destroy bimodlity of the stationary state.Comment: 9 page

    Urea and Fermentrol® additives for forage sorghum silage

    Adding urea to forage sorghum greatly increased the ensiling temperature, produced a more rapid and extensive fermentation, and resulted in more shrink loss in the silo. Fermentrol®, an enzyme-inoculant additive, had very little affect on the silage temperature or chemical composition, but it did reduce the shrink loss. Calves red urea-treated silage had the poorest performance. Control and Fermentrol® silages each produced about 90 lb of calf gain per ton of crop ensiled, however urea silage produced only 60 lb. All three silages had short bunk lives throughout the trial

    Chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting and postoperative nausea and vomiting are one of the most frequent but also very concerning consequences for patients undergoing chemotherapy or surgical procedures under general anesthesia. There are a variety of mechanisms involved in the activation of nausea and vomiting. Serotonin, a ubiquitous central and peripheral neurotransmitter, is thought to be the predominant mediator of the perception of nausea and triggering of the vomiting response in both the brain and the periphery via the 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor pathways. 5-HT3 receptor antagonists disrupt this pathway, largely at the level of the vagal afferent pathways, to decrease nausea and vomiting. This review will focus on dolasetron, an older but sill commonly used 5-HT3 receptor antagonist and its multimodal mechanism of action, safety and tolerability, patient considerations, and a review of the current literature on its use to combat both chemotherapy-induced and postoperative nausea and vomiting in these two important patient populations

    Hemodynamic, ventilatory and metabolic effects of light isometric exercise in patients with chronic heart failure

    AbstractLight isometric exercise, such as lifting or carrying loads that require 25% of a maximal voluntary contraction, is frequently reported to cause dyspnea in patients with heart failure. The pathophysiologic mechanisms responsible for the appearance of this symptom, however, are unknown. Accordingly, hemodynamic, metabolic and ventilatory responses to 6 min of light isometric forearm exercise were examined and compared in 20 patients with chronic heart failure and abnormal ejection fraction (24 ± 9%) and 17 normal individuals. In contrast to findings in normal volunteers, exercise cardiac index did not increase whereas exercising forearm and mixed venous lactate concentrations increased (p < 0.05) above levels at rest in patients with heart failure; at 90 s of recovery, blood lactate concentration remained elevated (p < 0.05). The venous lactate concentration of the nonexercising arm, unlike that of the exercising forearm, was not altered. Oxygen uptake, carbon droxide production and minute ventilation increased similarly in patients and nomal subjects durings exercise, but only in patients did each increase further (p < 0.05) during recovery.Thus, in patients with heart failure, light iaometric forearm exercise represents an anaerobic contraction with lactate production. The subsequent increase in carbon dioxide production leads to a disproportionate increase in minute ventilation and oxygen uptake during recovery that may be perceived as breathlessness

    High moisture corn ensiled with urea

    High moisture corn harvested at 18 and 26% moisture, rolled, treated with 0, .75, 1.5, or 2.25% urea (DM basis), and ensiled was evaluated for fermentation rate, chemical composition, and aerobic stability. Adding urea to 26% moisture corn increased the rate and extent of fermentation as measured by lactic, acetic, and total acid concentrations. Only a very limited fermentation occurred in the 18% moisture corn. No statistically significant differences were noted in DM loss or aerobic stability among the eight corn treatments
