Reduction of the Superfluid Density in the Vortex-Liquid Phase of Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy

In-plane complex surface impedance of a Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy single crystal was measured in the mixed state at 40.8 GHz.The surface reactance, which is proportional to the real part of the effective penetration depth, increased rapidly just above the first-order vortex-lattice melting transition field and the second magnetization peak field. This increase is ascribed to the decrease in the superfluid density rather than the loss of pinning. This result indicates that the vortex melting transition changes the electronic structure as well as the vortex structure.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Inflammation of peripheral tissues and injury to peripheral nerves induce diferring effects in the expression of the calcium-sensitive anandamide synthesising enzyme and related molecules in rat primary sensory neuron

Elevation of intracellular Ca 2+ concentration induces the synthesis of N0 arachydonoylethanolamine (anandamide) in a sub0popu lation of primary sensory neurons. N0acylphosphatidylethanolamine phospholipa se D (NAPE0PLD) is the only known enzyme, which synthesises anandamide in a Ca 2+ 0dependent manner. NAPE0 PLD mRNA, as well as anandamide's main targets, the excitatory transient receptor potential vanilloid type 1 ion channel (TRPV1) and the inhibitory cannabinoid type 1 (CB1) receptor and the main anandamide0hydrolysing enzyme fatty acid amide hydrolase (FAAH) are all expressed by sub0populatio ns of nociceptive primary sensory neurons. Thus, NAPE0PLD, TRPV1, the CB1 rec eptor and FAAH could form an autocrine signalling system, which could shape t he activity of a major sub0 population of nociceptive primary sensory neurons, hence contribute to the development of pain. While the expression patterns of TRPV1, the CB1 receptor and FAAH have been comprehensively elucidated, little i s known about NAPE0PLD expression in primary sensory neurons under physiol ogical and pathological conditions. We report that NAPE0PLD is expressed by about a third of primary sensory neurons, the overwhelming majority of which also express nociceptive markers as well as the CB1 receptor, TRPV1 and FAAH . Inflammation of peripheral tissues and injury to peripheral nerves induce diff ering but concerted changes in the expression pattern of NAPE0PLD, the CB1 receptor, T RPV1 and FAAH. Together these data indicate the existence of the anatomical basis for an autocrine signalling system, in a major proportion of nociceptive primar y sensory neurons, and that alterations in that autocrine signalling by periphe ral pathologies could contribute to the development of both inflammatory and neuropathi c pain

Thermal and magnetic properties of integrable spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains with applications to real compounds

The ground state and thermodynamic properties of spin-1 and spin-3/2 chains are investigated via exactly solved su(3) and su(4) models with physically motivated chemical potential terms. The analysis involves the Thermodynamic Bethe Ansatz and the High Temperature Expansion (HTE) methods. For the spin-1 chain with large single-ion anisotropy, a gapped phase occurs which is significantly different from the valence-bond-solid Haldane phase. The theoretical curves for the magnetization, susceptibility and specific heat are favourably compared with experimental data for a number of spin-1 chain compounds. For the spin-3/2 chain a degenerate gapped phase exists starting at zero external magnetic field. A middle magnetization plateau can be triggered by the single-ion anisotropy term. Overall, our results lend further weight to the applicability of integrable models to the physics of low-dimensional quantum spin systems. They also highlight the utility of the exact HTE method.Comment: 38 pages, 15 figure

Iron Fluorescent Line Emission from Young Stellar Objects in the Orion Nebula

We present the result of a systematic search for the iron Kalpha fluorescent line at 6.4 keV among 1616 X-ray sources detected by ultra-deep Chandra observations of the Orion Nebula Cluster and the obscured Orion Molecular Cloud 1 population as part of the Chandra Orion Ultra-deep Project (COUP). Seven sources are identified to have an excess emission at 6.4 keV among 127 control sample sources with significant counts in the 6.0-9.0 keV band. These seven sources are young stellar objects (YSOs) characterized by intense flare-like flux variations, thermal spectra, and near-infrared (NIR) counterparts. The observed equivalent widths of the line cannot be attributed to the fluorescence by interstellar or circumstellar matter along the line of sight. The X-ray spectral fits and NIR colors of the 6.4 keV sources show that these sources have X-ray absorption of > 1x10^22 cm^(-2) and NIR excess emission, which is not expected when the fluorescence occurs at the stellar photosphere. We therefore conclude that the iron fluorescent line of YSOs arises from reflection off of circumstellar disks, which are irradiated by the hard X-ray continuum emission of magnetic reconnection flares.Comment: 11 pages, 6 postscript figures, accepted for publication in ApJS. Rayleigh-Taylor stability of a strong vertical magnetic field at the Galactic center confined by a disk threaded with horizontal magnetic field

Observations of narrow radio-emitting filaments near the Galactic center have been interpreted in previous studies as evidence of a pervasive vertical (i.e. perpendicular to the Galactic plane) milliGauss magnetic field in the central 150 pc of the Galaxy. A simple cylindrically symmetric model for the equilibrium in this central region is proposed in which horizontal (i.e. parallel to the Galactic plane) magnetic fields embedded in an annular band of partially ionized molecular material of radius 150 pc are wrapped around vertical magnetic fields threading low-density hot plasma. The central vertical magnetic field, which has a pressure that significantly exceeds the thermal pressure of the medium, is confined by the weight of the molecular material. The stability of this equilibrium is studied indirectly by analyzing a uniformly rotating cylinder of infinite extent along the z axis in cylindrical coordinates (r,theta,z), with low-density plasma and an axial magnetic field at r 150 pc, and a gravitational acceleration g* proportional to r directed in the negative-r-hat direction. The density profile and gravity tend to destabilize the plasma, but the plasma tends to be stabilized by rotation and magnetic tension--since the interface between the high and low-density plasmas can not be perturbed without bending either the horizontal or vertical field. It is shown analytically that when beta= 8(pi)p/B^2 is small and the dense plasma is supported against gravity primarily by rotation, the necessary and sufficient condition for stability to k_z=0 modes is |g| < (2|Omega| a), where g = g* - Omega^2 r is the effective gravity, Omega is the uniform angular velocity, and "a" is the sound speed in the dense plasma.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures. Completely changed from first version: incorporates uniform rotation as well as orthogonal magnetic fields in the equilibrium dense and low-density plasm

Diffusion tensor imaging of Parkinson's disease, multiple system atrophy and progressive supranuclear palsy: a tract-based spatial statistics study

Although often clinically indistinguishable in the early stages, Parkinson's disease (PD), Multiple System Atrophy (MSA) and Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP) have distinct neuropathological changes. The aim of the current study was to identify white matter tract neurodegeneration characteristic of each of the three syndromes. Tract-based spatial statistics (TBSS) was used to perform a whole-brain automated analysis of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data to compare differences in fractional anisotropy (FA) and mean diffusivity (MD) between the three clinical groups and healthy control subjects. Further analyses were conducted to assess the relationship between these putative indices of white matter microstructure and clinical measures of disease severity and symptoms. In PSP, relative to controls, changes in DTI indices consistent with white matter tract degeneration were identified in the corpus callosum, corona radiata, corticospinal tract, superior longitudinal fasciculus, anterior thalamic radiation, superior cerebellar peduncle, medial lemniscus, retrolenticular and anterior limb of the internal capsule, cerebral peduncle and external capsule bilaterally, as well as the left posterior limb of the internal capsule and the right posterior thalamic radiation. MSA patients also displayed differences in the body of the corpus callosum corticospinal tract, cerebellar peduncle, medial lemniscus, anterior and superior corona radiata, posterior limb of the internal capsule external capsule and cerebral peduncle bilaterally, as well as the left anterior limb of the internal capsule and the left anterior thalamic radiation. No significant white matter abnormalities were observed in the PD group. Across groups, MD correlated positively with disease severity in all major white matter tracts. These results show widespread changes in white matter tracts in both PSP and MSA patients, even at a mid-point in the disease process, which are not found in patients with PD

Excimer formation by steric twisting in carbazole and triphenylamine-based host materials

This paper presents a detailed spectroscopic investigation of luminescence properties of 4,4′-Bis(N-carbazolyl)-1,1′-biphenyl (CBP) and N,N,N’,N’-tetraphenylbenzidine (TAD) in solutions and neat films. These compounds are compared to their derivatives CDBP and TDAD that contain methyl groups in the 2 and 2’ position of the biphenyl core. We find that whereas steric twisting in CDBP and TDAD leads to a high triplet energy of about 3.0 and 3.1 eV, respectively, these compounds also tend to form triplet excimers in a neat film, in contrast to CBP and TAD. By comparison with N-phenylcarbazole (NPC) and triphenylamine (TPA), on which these compounds are based, as well as with the rigid spiro analogs to CBP and TAD we show that the reduced excimer formation in CBP and TAD can be attributed to a localization of the excitation onto the central biphenyl part of the molecule. We acknowledge support from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) through the project ‘Trip-Q’, the German Science Foundation (DFG) through the Research and Training Group GRK 1640 and the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (grant number EP/G060738/1).This is the final published version. Thermodynamical limit of general gl(N) spin chains: vacuum state and densities

We study the vacuum state of spin chains where each site carry an arbitrary representation. We prove that the string hypothesis, usually used to solve the Bethe ansatz equations, is valid for representations characterized by rectangular Young tableaux. In these cases, we obtain the density of the center of the strings for the vacuum. We work out different examples and, in particular, the spin chains with periodic array of impurities.Comment: Latex file, 27 pages, 5 figures (.eps) A more detailed study of the representations allowing string hypothesis has added. A simpler formula for the densities is given. References added and misprint correcte
