Nonequilibrium electron spin polarization in a double quantum dot. Lande mechanism
In moderately strong magnetic fields, the difference in Lande g-factors in
each of the dots of a coupled double quantum dot device may induce oscillations
between singlet and triplet states of the entangled electron pair and lead to a
nonequilibrium electron spin polarization. We will show that this polarization
may partially survive the rapid inhomogeneous decoherence due to random nuclear
magnetic fields.Comment: New version contains figures. New title better reflects the content

Fermion Quasi-Spherical Harmonics
Spherical Harmonics, , are derived and presented (in a
Table) for half-odd-integer values of and . These functions are
eigenfunctions of and written as differential operators in the
spherical-polar angles, and . The Fermion Spherical Harmonics
are a new, scalar and angular-coordinate-dependent representation of fermion
spin angular momentum. They have symmetry in the angle , and hence
are not single-valued functions on the Euclidean unit sphere; they are
double-valued functions on the sphere, or alternatively are interpreted as
having a double-sphere as their domain.Comment: 16 pages, 2 Tables. Submitted to J.Phys.
Localized Wavefunctions and Magnetic Band Structure for Lateral Semiconductor Superlattices
In this paper we present calculations on the electronic band structure of a
two-dimensional lateral superlattice subject to a perpendicular magnetic field
by employing a projection operator technique based on the ray-group of
magnetotranslation operators. We construct a new basis of appropriately
symmetrized Bloch-like wavefunctions as linear combination of well-localized
magnetic-Wannier functions. The magnetic field was consistently included in the
Wannier functions defined in terms of free-electron eigenfunctions in the
presence of external magnetic field in the symmetric gauge. Using the above
basis, we calculate the magnetic energy spectrum of electrons in a lateral
superlattice with bi-directional weak electrostatic modulation. Both a square
lattice and a triangular one are considered as special cases. Our approach
based on group theory handles the cases of integer and rational magnetic fluxes
in a uniform way and the provided basis could be convenient for further both
analytic and numerical calculations.Comment: 19 pages, 5 figures. accepted to Int. J. Mod. Phys. B (April 2006
Statistical Laws Governing Fluctuations in Word Use from Word Birth to Word Death
We analyze the dynamic properties of 10^7 words recorded in English, Spanish
and Hebrew over the period 1800--2008 in order to gain insight into the
coevolution of language and culture. We report language independent patterns
useful as benchmarks for theoretical models of language evolution. A
significantly decreasing (increasing) trend in the birth (death) rate of words
indicates a recent shift in the selection laws governing word use. For new
words, we observe a peak in the growth-rate fluctuations around 40 years after
introduction, consistent with the typical entry time into standard dictionaries
and the human generational timescale. Pronounced changes in the dynamics of
language during periods of war shows that word correlations, occurring across
time and between words, are largely influenced by coevolutionary social,
technological, and political factors. We quantify cultural memory by analyzing
the long-term correlations in the use of individual words using detrended
fluctuation analysis.Comment: Version 1: 31 pages, 17 figures, 3 tables. Version 2 is streamlined,

Antisymmetric Higgs representation in SO(10) for neutrinos
A Model based on SO(10) grand unified theory (GUT) and supersymmetry is
presented to describe observed phenomena for neutrinos. The large mixing angles
among different generations, together with the small masses, are attributed to
the Higgs boson structure at the GUT energy scale. Quantitative discussions for
these observables are given, taking into account their energy evolution.Comment: 10 page
Orbital character of O 2p unoccupied states near the Fermi level in CrO2
The orbital character, orientation, and magnetic polarization of the O 2
unoccupied states near the Fermi level () in CrO was determined using
polarization-dependent X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and X-ray magnetic
circular dichroism (XMCD) from high-quality, single-crystal films. A sharp peak
observed just above is excited only by the electric field vector () normal to the tetragonal -axis, characteristic of a narrow band
( 0.7 eV bandwidth) constituted from O 2 orbitals perpendicular to
(O 2) hybridized with Cr 3 states. By comparison
with band-structure and configuration-interaction (CI) cluster calculations our
results support a model of CrO as a half-metallic ferromagnet with large
exchange-splitting energy ( 3.0 eV) and
substantial correlation effects.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Rev. B Rapid

Brain age estimation at tract group level and its association with daily life measures, cardiac risk factors and genetic variants
Abstract Brain age can be estimated using different Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) modalities including diffusion MRI. Recent studies demonstrated that white matter (WM) tracts that share the same function might experience similar alterations. Therefore, in this work, we sought to investigate such issue focusing on five WM bundles holding that feature that is Association, Brainstem, Commissural, Limbic and Projection fibers, respectively. For each tract group, we estimated brain age for 15,335 healthy participants from United Kingdom Biobank relying on diffusion MRI data derived endophenotypes, Bayesian ridge regression modeling and 10 fold-cross validation. Furthermore, we estimated brain age for an Ensemble model that gathers all the considered WM bundles. Association analysis was subsequently performed between the estimated brain age delta as resulting from the six models, that is for each tract group as well as for the Ensemble model, and 38 daily life style measures, 14 cardiac risk factors and cardiovascular magnetic resonance imaging features and genetic variants. The Ensemble model that used all tracts from all fiber groups (FG) performed better than other models to estimate brain age. Limbic tracts based model reached the highest accuracy with a Mean Absolute Error (MAE) of 5.08, followed by the Commissural ( MAE = 5.23 ), Association ( MAE = 5.24 ), and Projection ( MAE = 5.28 ) ones. The Brainstem tracts based model was the less accurate achieving a MAE of 5.86. Accordingly, our study suggests that the Limbic tracts experience less brain aging or allows for more accurate estimates compared to other tract groups. Moreover, the results suggest that Limbic tract leads to the largest number of significant associations with daily lifestyle factors than the other tract groups. Lastly, two SNPs were significantly (p value < 5 E - 8 ) associated with brain age delta in the Projection fibers. Those SNPs are mapped to HIST1H1A and SLC17A3 genes

A New 76Ge Double Beta Decay Experiment at LNGS
This Letter of Intent has been submitted to the Scientific Committee of the
INFN Laboratori Nazionali del Gran Sasso (LNGS) in March 2004. It describes a
novel facility at the LNGS to study the double beta decay of 76Ge using an
(optionally active) cryogenic fluid shield. The setup will allow to scrutinize
with high significance on a short time scale the current evidence for
neutrinoless double beta decay of 76Ge using the existing 76Ge diodes from the
previous Heidelberg-Moscow and IGEX experiments. An increase in the lifetime
limit can be achieved by adding more enriched detectors, remaining thereby
background-free up to a few 100 kg-years of exposure.Comment: 67 pages, 19 eps figures, 17 tables, gzipped tar fil
Search for astrophysical tau neutrinos in three years of IceCube data
The IceCube Neutrino Observatory has observed a diffuse flux of TeV-PeV astrophysical neutrinos at 5.7Ï significance from an all-flavor search. The direct detection of tau neutrinos in this flux has yet to occur. Tau neutrinos become distinguishable from other flavors in IceCube at energies above a few hundred TeV, when the cascade from the tau neutrino charged current interaction becomes resolvable from the cascade from the tau lepton decay. This paper presents results from the first dedicated search for tau neutrinos with energies between 214 TeV and 72 PeV in the full IceCube detector. The analysis searches for IceCube optical sensors that observe two separate pulses in a single eventâone from the tau neutrino interaction and a second from the tau decay. No candidate events were observed in three years of IceCube data. For the first time, a differential upper limit on astrophysical tau neutrinos is derived around the PeV energy region, which is nearly 3 orders of magnitude lower in energy than previous limits from dedicated tau neutrino searches
