Antioxidant activity in commonly grown and consumed vegetables: a screening survey
A diet rich in fruits and vegetables is associated with a reduced risk of developing cardiovascular diseases and certain types of cancer. This positive effect is related to bioactive phytochemicals found in plants.The vegetables were grown in the field or in greenhouses at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (59º40’N) during the years 2000-2002. The vegetables were harvested at commercial maturity and analysed for dry matter and antioxidant activity assessed by the FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) assay. There was a large variation in antioxidant activity both between and within different species. The highest antioxidant activity was observed in kale, red cultivars of cabbage and table beet. The lowest antioxidant activity was observed in lettuce, cucumber, carrots and tomato. The vegetables possessing a red colour showed higher antioxidant activity with the exception of carrots and tomatoes
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contaminants in black-lip (pearl) oyster Pinctada margaritifera from Kish Island (Persian Gulf)
Twenty-four Black-lip Oysters (Pinctada margaritifera ) were collected in summer (July) 2004 from six coastal locations in Kish Island (Persian Gulf) and were analyzed at the analytical laboratory of Great Lakes Institute for Environmental Research at the University of Windsor according to the chemical analysis procedures which has been accredited by the Canadian Association for Environmental Analysis Laboratories (CAEAL). In order to obtain information on bioavailability of sixteen EPA priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), concentration of 2 to 6-ring PAHs was determined for all samples with application of a gas chromatograph with a mass selective detector. Oysters from Big Coral site exhibited a wide range of total PAH concentration (1.07 to 77.66 ng/g wet weight). The lowest value (oysters from Foreigner’s Pelage) and highest values were 0.7 and 36.33 ng/g wet weight respectively. Comparison of the PAH concentrations in oysters with sediments collected from the same locations showed that the overall bioaccumulation has been performed through the movement of water-soluble lower molecular weight (LMW) PAHs to the oysters in the studied area
Early Results from the Wisconsin H-Alpha Mapper Southern Sky Survey
After a successful eleven-year campaign at Kitt Peak, we moved the Wisconsin
H-Alpha Mapper (WHAM) to Cerro Tololo in early 2009. Here we present some of
the early data after a few months under southern skies. These maps begin to
complete the first all-sky, kinematic survey of the diffuse H-alpha emission
from the Milky Way. Much of this emission arises from the Warm Ionized Medium
(WIM), a significant component of the ISM that extends a few kiloparsecs above
the Galactic disk. While this first look at the data focuses on the H-alpha
survey, WHAM is also capable of observing many other optical emission lines,
revealing fascinating trends in the temperature and ionization state of the
WIM. Our ongoing studies of the physical conditions of diffuse ionized gas will
continue from the southern hemisphere following the H-alpha survey. In
addition, future observations will cover the full velocity range of the
Magellanic Stream, Bridge, and Clouds to trace the ionized gas associated with

An approach towards rapid optical measurements of antioxidant activity in blueberry cultivars
Blueberries are well known for their high antioxidant levels. Compared to bilberries (V. myrtillus) with higher antioxidant activity and more intensive blue colour throughout the whole berry, highbush blueberries have the blue pigments concentrated in the skin. Highbush blueberry skin is found to contain a very high content of phenolic compounds. To measure the total antioxidant activity in blueberries, several methods, mostly destructive, including the FRAP assay, have been used. This work is an initial approach towards a simple and rapid method, combining optical and antioxidant activity measurements. Highbush blueberry (V. corymbosum) cultivars ‘Bluecrop’, ‘Hardyblue’, ‘Patriot’, and lowbush cultivars ‘Putte’ (a hybrid originated from V. angustifolium) and ‘Aron’ (V. corymbosum x V. uliginosum) were grown at the Norwegian University of Life Sciences (59º 40’N). Berries were harvested at commercial blue-ripe stage of maturity. Fresh berries were cut horizontally and placed on a scanner in order to examine berry size and skin thickness. Berries were weighed, and analysed for antioxidant activity using the FRAP (Ferric Reducing Ability of Plasma) assay. The FRAP assay is a non-specific method based on absorption changes following a reduction of a ferric- to a ferrous-complex in the presence of antioxidants.Own previous results have shown that antioxidant activity and berry weight varied between cultivars (REMBERG et al., 2003). Small berries had higher antioxidant activity compared to larger berries. In this follow-up project, skin thickness and berry diameter were measured by using an image- processing program. Analysis of Spatial Structure of the SPica H II Region
Far ultraviolet (FUV) spectral images of the Spica H II region are first
presented here for the Si II* 1533.4A and Al II 1670.8A lines and then compared
with the optical Halpha image. The H alpha and Si II* images show enhanced
emissions in the southern part of the H II region where H I density increases
outwards. This high density region, which we identify as part of the
"interaction ring" of the Loop I superbubble and the Local Bubble, seems to
bound the southern H II region. On the other hand, the observed profile of Al
II shows a broad central peak, without much difference between the northern and
southern parts, which we suspect results from multiple resonant scattering. The
extended tails seen in the radial profiles of the FUV intensities suggest that
the nebula may be embedded in a warm ionized gas. Simulation with a spectral
synthesis code yields the values of the Lyman continuum luminosity and the
effective temperature of the central star similar to previous estimates with
10^46.2 photons s^-1 and 26,000 K, respectively, but the density of the
northern H II region, 0.22 cm^-3, is much smaller than previous estimates for
