How well can we measure supermassive black hole spin?
Being one of only two fundamental properties black holes possess, the spin of
supermassive black holes (SMBHs) is of great interest for understanding
accretion processes and galaxy evolution. However, in these early days of spin
measurements, consistency and reproducibility of spin constraints have been a
challenge. Here we focus on X-ray spectral modelling of active galactic nuclei
(AGN), examining how well we can truly return known reflection parameters such
as spin under standard conditions. We have created and fit over 4000 simulated
Seyfert 1 spectra each with 3751k counts. We assess the fits with
reflection fraction of = 1 as well as reflection-dominated AGN with =
5. We also examine the consequence of permitting fits to search for retrograde
spin. In general, we discover that most parameters are over-estimated when
spectroscopy is restricted to the 2.5 - 10.0 keV regime and that models are
insensitive to inner emissivity index and ionization. When the bandpass is
extended out to 70keV, parameters are more accurately estimated. Repeating the
process for = 5 reduces our ability to measure photon index (3 to 8
per cent error and overestimated), but increases precision in all other
parameters -- most notably ionization, which becomes better constrained
(45 erg cm ) for low ionization parameters (200 erg
cm ). In all cases, we find the spin parameter is only well
measured for the most rapidly rotating supermassive black holes (i.e.
0.8 to about 0.10) and that inner emissivity index is never well
constrained. Allowing our model to search for retrograde spin did not improve

Is HE 0436-4717 Anemic? A deep look at a bare Seyfert 1 galaxy
A multi-epoch, multi-instrument analysis of the Seyfert 1 galaxy HE 0436-4717
is conducted using optical to X-ray data from XMM-Newton and Swift (including
the BAT). Fitting of the UV-to-X-ray spectral energy distribution shows little
evidence of extinction and the X-ray spectral analysis does not confirm
previous reports of deep absorption edges from OVIII. HE 0436-4717 is a "bare"
Seyfert with negligible line-of-sight absorption making it ideal to study the
central X-ray emitting region. Three scenarios were considered to describe the
X-ray data: partial covering absorption, blurred reflection, and soft
Comptonization. All three interpretations describe the 0.5-10.0 keV spectra
well. Extrapolating the models to 100 keV results in poorer fits for the the
partial covering model. When also considering the rapid variability during one
of the XMM-Newton observations, the blurred reflection model appears to
describe all the observations in the most self-consistent manner. If adopted,
the blurred reflection model requires a very low iron abundance in HE
0436-4717. We consider the possibilities that this is an artifact of the

Double dynamical regime of confined water
The Van Hove self correlation function of water confined in a silica pore is
calculated from Molecular Dynamics trajectories upon supercooling. At long time
in the relaxation region we found that the behaviour of the real space
time dependent correlators can be decomposed in a very slow, almost frozen,
dynamics due to the bound water close to the substrate and a faster dynamics of
the free water which resides far from the confining surface. For free water we
confirm the evidences of an approach to a crossover mode coupling transition,
previously found in Q space. In the short time region we found that the two
dynamical regimes are overimposed and cannot be distinguished. This shows that
the interplay between the slower and the faster dynamics emerges in going from
early times to the relaxation region, where a layer analysis of the

Discovery of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mkn 335 in an historical low X-ray flux state
We report the discovery of the Narrow-Line Seyfert 1 galaxy Mkn 335 in an
extremely low X-ray state. A comparison of Swift observations obtained in May
and June/July 2007 with all previous X-ray observations between 1971 to 2006
show the AGN to have diminished in flux by a factor of more than 30, the lowest
X-ray flux Mkn 335 has ever been observed in. The Swift observations show an
extremely hard X-ray spectrum at energies above 2 keV. Possible interpretations
include partial covering absorption or X-ray reflection from the disk. In this
letter we consider the partial covering interpretation. The Swift observations
can be well fit by a strong partial covering absorber with varying absorption
column density N_H= 1-4 x 10^{23} cm-2 and a covering fraction f_c=0.9 - 1.
When corrected for intrinsic absorption, the X-ray flux of Mkn 335 varies by
only factors of 4-6. In the UV Mkn 335 shows variability in the order of 0.2
mag. We discuss the similarity of Mkn 335 with the highly variable NLS1
WPVS007, and speculate about a possible link between NLS1 galaxies and

Spectral estimates of solar radiation intercepted by corn canopies
Reflectance factor data were acquired with a Landsat band radiometer throughout two growing seasons for corn (Zea mays L.) canopies differing in planting dates, populations, and soil types. Agronomic data collected included leaf area index (LAI), biomass, development stage, and final grain yields. The spectral variable, greenness, was associated with 78 percent of the variation in LAI over all treatments. Single observations of LAI or greenness have limited value in predicting corn yields. The proportions of solar radiation intercepted (SRI) by these canopies were estimated using either measured LAI or greenness. Both SRI estimates, when accumulated over the growing season, accounted for approximately 65 percent of the variation in yields. Models which simulated the daily effects of weather and intercepted solar radiation on growth had the highest correlations to grain yields. This concept of estimating intercepted solar radiation using spectral data represents a viable approach for merging spectral and meteorological data for crop yield models
The relaxation dynamics of a simple glass former confined in a pore
We use molecular dynamics computer simulations to investigate the relaxation
dynamics of a binary Lennard-Jones liquid confined in a narrow pore. We find
that the average dynamics is strongly influenced by the confinement in that
time correlation functions are much more stretched than in the bulk. By
investigating the dynamics of the particles as a function of their distance
from the wall, we can show that this stretching is due to a strong dependence
of the relaxation time on this distance, i.e. that the dynamics is spatially
very heterogeneous. In particular we find that the typical relaxation time of
the particles close to the wall is orders of magnitude larger than the one of

Elimination of the chirp of optical pulses through cascaded nonlinearities in periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides
We propose and demonstrate a novel method for the elimination of arbitrary frequency chirp from short optical pulses. The technique is based on the combination of two cascaded second-order nonlinearities in two individual periodically poled lithium niobate waveguides
X-ray Spectral and Variability Properties of Low-Mass AGN
We study the X-ray properties of a sample of 14 optically-selected low-mass
AGN whose masses lie within the range 1E5 -2E6 M(solar) with XMM-Newton. Only
six of these low-mass AGN have previously been studied with sufficient quality
X-ray data, thus, we more than double the number of low-mass AGN observed by
XMM-Newton with the addition of our sample. We analyze their X-ray spectral
properties and variability and compare the results to their more massive
counterparts. The presence of a soft X-ray excess is detectable in all five
objects which were not background dominated at 2-3 keV. Combined with previous
studies, this gives a total of 8 low-mass AGN with a soft excess. The low-mass
AGN exhibit rapid, short-term variability (hundreds to thousands of seconds) as
well as long-term variability (months to years). There is a well-known
anti-correlation between black hole mass and variability amplitude (normalized
excess variance). Comparing our sample of low-mass AGN with this relation we
find that all of our sample lie below an extrapolation of the linear relation.
Such a flattening of the relation at low masses (below about 1E6 M(solar)) is
expected if the variability in all AGN follows the same shape power spectrum
with a break frequency that is dependent on mass. Finally, we also found two
objects that show significant absorption in their X-ray spectrum, indicative of
type 2 objects, although they are classified as type 1 AGN based on optical

CLO (Collateralized Loan Obligation) Market and Corporate Lending
We investigate whether access to the collateralized loan obligation (CLO) market as collateral managers or underwriters affects lenders' ability to overcome an idiosyncratic adverse shock in the corporate lending market. In a triple difference-in-differences setting, we find that lenders decrease their origination of loans following a negative shock; however, those with CLO access become more likely to arrange deals with securitizable facilities (Term B). Moreover, they choose to arrange deals with smaller size on-balance-sheet lending (Term A). The results suggest that securitization is actively used by lenders to switch to off-balance-sheet lending and to reduce the risk retained on the balance sheet
