EFFECT OF MOMORDICA CHARANTIA AND SYZYGIUM CUMINI EXTRACT ON SERUM ELECTROLYTES IN ALLOXAN INDUCED DIABETIC RATS
Objective: Diabetes is a group of disorders characterized by high blood glucose levels. Disturbances in serum electrolytes like sodium (Na+) and potassium (K+) are found in diabetes. The purpose of the study was to investigate the disturbances in concentrations of serum electrolytes in hyperglycemic crisis and the effect of syzygium cumini and momordica charantia standardized aqueous extracts on serum electrolytes (Na+and K+) in normal and diabetic rats. Methods: Diabetes is induced by intraperitoneal injection of alloxan at a dose of 120 mg/kg b. w in rats. Rats were divided into 5 groups (normal control, disease control, metformin, test 1 and test 2). In test groups 1 and 2, SASESC (standardized aqueous seed extract of syzygium cumini) and SAFEMC (standardized aqueous fruit extract of momordica charantia) were respectively administered orally to alloxan induced diabetic rats, and their serum electrolyte levels were observed at 1st, 4th, 7th and 14th days. Results: By the 14thday, the Na+ and K+ levels in groups 4 and 5 were almost normal. However, in group 3 (standard), Na+levels were relatively lower and K+ levels were relatively higher than groups 4 and 5 (test). In group 2 (disease control) as compared to group 1 (normal control), a decrease in Na+ and increase in K+ levels was observed even on day 14.Conclusion: Treatment with anti diabetic drugs like metformin, syzygium cumini (test-1), momordica charantia (test-2) restored the electrolyte levels almost back to normal over a period of study (14 d). There was significant (**P<0.01, *P<0.05) normalization of electrolyte levels in diabetic rats. It was concluded that syzygium cumini and momordica charantia showed better efficiency in restoring the electrolyte imbalance as compared to metformin during our study
Evaluation of immunization coverage among children aged 12-23 months in Surendranagar city
Background: Infectious diseases are a major cause of morbidity & mortality in children. One of the most cost effective & easy methods for child survival is immunization. In May 1974, the World Health Organization (WHO) officially launched a global immunization programme known as Expanded Programme of immunization (EPI) to protect all the children of the world against 6 Vaccine Preventable Diseases by the year 2000. It was later redesignated as Universal Immunization Programme (UIP) since 1985. The objectives of this study were to assess the dropout rate and primary immunization coverage of children aged 12-23 months in Surendranagar city and to know the various reasons for partially or not immunizing the child. Methods: A community-based cross-sectional study. Thirty clusters were selected out of a total of 282 blocks of Surendranagar using the cluster sampling method. Cluster sampling method was used for sample selection and the proforma designed by UNICEF was used as a study tool. Sample size was 210 children (7 Children from each cluster) of aged 12-23 months. The obtained data were analyzed using appropriate statistical tests like Z test and X2 test. Results: Out Of the 210 surveyed children, 121(57.62%) were males and 89(42.38%) were females. Immunization card was available for 69.52% of children and fully immunized were 70.47%. Coverage was highest for BCG (95.71%) followed by OPV3 (82.85%), DPT3 (79.52%) and lowest for measles (75.23%). As far as the dropout rate is concerned, it was 21.39%, 10.21%, and 9.37% for BCG to measles, DPT1Â to DPT3, and OPV1Â to OPV3, respectively. Amongst the various reasons main reasons for dropout or unimmunization of children were ignorance in about 64% and lack of information regarding time, place and schedule (21%).Conclusions: Improvement should focus on reducing the dropout rate from DPT2/OPV2 to DPT3/OPV3 and improving coverage of measles and also Vitamin A
Prevalence of middle mesial canals and Isthmi in mandibular molars in a subpopulation of Andhra Pradesh: An in vivo investigation using CBCT.
Background: Pulp and root canal space is enigmatic and highly complex. Encountering rare has become a norm with the advancements in the technology of materials and types of equipment. The success of the root canal treatment depends on the effective removal of bacteria from the whole pulp space. A high percentage of the missed canal is reported for the failure of Endodontic therapy. Mandibular molars have complex root canal anatomy. Two roots with two canals in mesial root and one to two canals in distal root is a common occurrence.   Nevertheless, the incidence of variation is relatively high, including separate distolingual, mesiobuccal, C-Shaped canals, isthmus, and additional canal in the mesial root. A wide range of the middle mesial canal occurrence, i.e., 3.1 to 46.1%, is reported in the world and 28.3% in North India.
Aim: To identify the prevalence of the true middle mesial canal (MM) and configuration of Isthmi in the mesial root of the mandibular molar in the AP  subpopulation of South India. Â
Materials and methods: CBCT of 89 patients were randomly selected from the institutional database. Data entry was performed in Excel, and data analysis was done with the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).
Results: Four images (4.5%) revealed Middle Mesial canals with no statically significant occurrence. The frequency of isthmi in the mesial roots was 52.7%. This showed a considerable presence.
Conclusion: MM canals are 4.5% in a subpopulation of Andhra Pradesh. Isthmuses are very common in the mesial roots of permanent mandibular molars. Isthmus about 58% was seen with Type II configuration that is the presence of two canals without a definite communication
Fabrication of Nd3+ and Yb3+ doped NIR emitting nano fluorescent probe: A candidate for bioimaging applications
The intentional design of rare earth doped luminescent architecture exhibits unique optical properties and it can be considered as a promising and potential probe for optical imaging applications. Calcium fluoride (CaF2) nanoparticles doped with optimum concentration of Nd3+ and Yb3+ as sensitizer and activator, respectively, were synthesized by wet precipitation method and characterized by x-ray diffraction (XRD) and photoluminescence. In spite of the fact that the energy transfer takes place from Nd3+ to Yb3+, the luminescence intensity was found to be weak due to the lattice defects generated from the doping of trivalent cations (Nd3+ and Yb3+) for divalent host cations (Ca2+). These defect centres were tailored via charge compensation approach by co-doping Na+ ion and by optimizing its concentration and heat treatment duration. CaF2 doped with 5 mol% Nd3+, 3 mol% Yb3+ and 4 mol% Na+ after heat treatment for 2 h exhibited significantly enhanced emission intensity and life time. The ex vivo fluorescence imaging experiment was done at various thickness of chicken breast tissue. The maximum theoretical depth penetration of the NIR light was calculated and the value is 14 mm. The fabricated phosphor can serve as contrast agent for deep tissue near infrared (NIR) light imaging

Assessing village-level carbon balance due to greenhouse gas mitigation interventions using EX-ACT model
Under National Initiative on Climate Resilient Agriculture (NICRA) project, a range of climate smart agricultural practices were evaluated with on-farm demonstrations during 2011–2013 in eight climatically vulnerable villages of Andhra Pradesh, India. Proven climate smart practices viz residue recycling, soil, water and nutrient management, afforestation and feeding + breeding practices in livestock were implemented in annual and perennial crops, irrigated rice, horticulture, fodder, forestry and livestock. An EX-ante carbon-balance tool (EX-ACT) developed by the FAO was used with a combination of various climate smart interventions to know the mitigation potentials in eight climatically vulnerable villages of Andhra Pradesh, India. Based on our observations, EX-ACT model had shown that these practices were effective to mitigate CO2 emissions apart from enhancing soil productivity. In Nacharam, Yagantipalli, Sirusuwada and Matsyapuri villages, climate smart practices implemented in annual crops along with crop residue recycling, crop and water management practices resulted in negative carbon (C) balance by −16,410, −8851, −7271 and −6125 t CO2 e, respectively. The EX-ACT model predicted positive carbon balance with irrigated module in the rice-growing villages of Sirusuwada and Matsyapuri villages. The negative values suggest a sink, and positive values a source for CO2 emissions. In Chamaluru village, although there were CO2 emissions (source) due to livestock and non-forest and land use changes, there was a carbon sink due to other activities as predicted by the model. The results suggested that various climatic smart practices at the village level were successful in creating net sink of CO2 emissions (t CO2 e)
GNE Myopathy: Genotype – Phenotype Correlation and Disease Progression in an Indian Cohort
\ua9 2024 – The authors. Published by IOS Press.Introduction: GNE myopathy is a rare slowly progressive adult-onset distal myopathy with autosomal recessive inheritance. It has distinctive features of quadriceps sparing with preferential anterior tibial involvement. Most patients eventually become wheelchair bound by 10–20 years after onset. This study analyzes the phenotype-genotype characteristics and disease progression in a large cohort of GNEM patients from India. Materials and methods: Retrospective observational study on GNEM from a quaternary neurology referral hospital in southern India. Data was collected from clinical phenotyping, serum creatine kinase levels, muscle biopsy histopathology, genetic analysis and functional assessment scales – IBMFRS and MDFRS. Results: 157 patients were included with mean age at onset and diagnosis: 26.5 \ub1 6.2 years and 32.8 \ub1 7.8 years, respectively. M:F ratio was 25: 13. Most common presenting symptom: foot drop (46.5%) and limb girdle weakness (19.1%). Wasting and weakness of small muscles of hand and finger flexors seen in 66.2% and as an initial symptoms in 5.2%. Though tibialis anterior involvement was most common (89.2%), early quadriceps weakness was noted in 3.2% and Beevor’s sign in 59.2%. Rimmed vacuoles were present in 75% of patients with muscle biopsy. Most common variant was the Indian Founder variant identified in 129 patients (c.2179 G>A, p.Val727Met - 82.2%) and most common zygosity being compound heterozygous state (n = 115, 87.5%). Biallelic kinase domain variations predisposed to a more severe phenotype. Wheelchair bound state noted in 8.9% with a mean age and duration of 32.0 \ub1 7.1 and 6.3 \ub1 4.9 years respectively, earlier than previous studies on other ethnic groups. Conclusion: This is the largest GNEM cohort reported from South Asia. The p.Val727Met variant in compound heterozygous state is noted in majority (82.2%) of the cases. Observed relationships between genotype and clinical parameters shows that severity of the disease might be attributable to specific GNE genotype and thus could aid in predicting the disease progression
Exploring farmers’ communication pattern and satisfaction regarding the adoption of Agromet advisory services in semi-arid regions of southern India
Agriculture is significantly impacted by the variability in weather patterns, imposing substantial constraints on farmers’ ability to make informed tactical and strategic decisions regarding their crops. Seasonal climate projections have shown potential for informing agricultural decisions, but the actual adoption of climate information by farmers has been relatively slow and limited. The present study was conducted with the objective of investigating the characteristics of adopters, the communication network, and the level of farmer’s satisfaction concerning the adoption and continued use of Agromet Advisories Services (AAS). Two semi-arid districts, namely Kurnool and Anantapur in Andhra Pradesh, were purposively selected, wherein 280 farmers constituted the sampling frame. In this study, social network analysis (SNA) was conducted to examine the peer-to-peer communication patterns, while importance-performance analysis (IPA) was employed to evaluate farmer’s satisfaction, contributing to the continued adoption of AAS. The findings revealed that with regard to personality and communication characteristics, farmers were in the low category for their ability to cope with uncertainties and risk and even for their information-seeking behavior. Furthermore, the results showed farmers to be highly satisfied with the overall adoption of AAS. However, the IPA matrix revealed that among the nine attributes, the credibility of the forecasts needed refinement to promote sustained adoption. Excessive emphasis was placed on attributes such as the frequency of forecasts, which could be channeled into other initiatives. Peer-to-peer communication emerged as a crucial strategy in the adoption of AAS. Governments, non-governmental organizations, and extension functionaries should make a concerted effort to enhance the continued adoption of AAS by involving local stakeholders in sharing and participating in climate information production, forming farmer’s groups, and focusing on farmers’ literacy toward AAS
