    Cyclic voltammetry peaks due to deep level traps in Si nanowire array electroes

    When metal-assisted chemical etching (MACE) is used to increase the effective surface area of Si electrodes for electrochemical capacitors, it is often found that the cyclic voltammetry characteristics contain anodic and cathodic peaks. We link these peaks to the charging-discharging dynamics of deep level traps within the nanowire system. The trap levels are associated with the use of Ag in the MACE process that can leave minute amounts of Ag residue within the nanowire system to interact with the H2O layer surrounding the nanowires in a room temperature ionic liquid. The influence of the traps can be removed by shifting the Fermi level away from the trap levels via spin-on doping. These results in lower capacitance values but improved charge-discharge cycling behavior. Low-frequency noise measurements proof the presence or absence of these deep level traps

    {EpiExplorer}: {Live} Exploration and Global Analysis of Large Epigenomic Datasets

    ABSTRACT: Epigenome mapping consortia are generating resources of tremendous value for studying epigenetic regulation. To maximize their utility and impact, new tools are needed that facilitate interactive analysis of epigenome datasets. Here we describe EpiExplorer, a web tool for exploring genome and epigenome data on a genomic scale. We demonstrate EpiExplorer's utility by describing a hypothesis-generating analysis of DNA hydroxymethylation in relation to public reference maps of the human epigenome. All EpiExplorer analyses are performed dynamically within seconds, using an efficient and versatile text indexing scheme that we introduce to bioinformatics.     Highlights from Five Years at the B Factories

    The highlights and conflicts at the B Factories are briefly reviewed. CPCP violation was established in 2001 in B0J/ψKSB^0 \to J/\psi K_S and related modes, which has now become a precision measurement of CP violation in B0B^0-Bˉ0\bar B^0 mixing. However, the situation for the B0π+πB^0 \to \pi^+\pi^- and charmless bsb\to s modes, which probe also CP violation in the {\it decay} amplitude, are not quite settled yet. They could be hinting at presence of both strong (CP conserving) and new physics (CP violating) phases. We critically assess the developments and discuss some related discrepancies and highlights, such as observation of direct CP violation, and make a projection towards the next few years.Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, to appear as Brief Review in Mod.     Parity lifetime of bound states in a proximitized semiconductor nanowire

    Quasiparticle excitations can compromise the performance of superconducting devices, causing high frequency dissipation, decoherence in Josephson qubits, and braiding errors in proposed Majorana-based topological quantum computers. Quasiparticle dynamics have been studied in detail in metallic superconductors but remain relatively unexplored in semiconductor-superconductor structures, which are now being intensely pursued in the context of topological superconductivity. To this end, we introduce a new physical system comprised of a gate-confined semiconductor nanowire with an epitaxially grown superconductor layer, yielding an isolated, proximitized nanowire segment. We identify Andreev-like bound states in the semiconductor via bias spectroscopy, determine the characteristic temperatures and magnetic fields for quasiparticle excitations, and extract a parity lifetime (poisoning time) of the bound state in the semiconductor exceeding 10 ms.Comment: text and supplementary information combine

    Transport signatures of quasiparticle poisoning in a Majorana island

    We investigate effects of quasiparticle poisoning in a Majorana island with strong tunnel coupling to normal-metal leads. In addition to the main Coulomb blockade diamonds, "shadow" diamonds appear, shifted by 1e in gate voltage, consistent with transport through an excited (poisoned) state of the island. Comparison to a simple model yields an estimate of parity lifetime for the strongly coupled island (~ 1 {\mu}s) and sets a bound for a weakly coupled island (> 10 {\mu}s). Fluctuations in the gate-voltage spacing of Coulomb peaks at high field, reflecting Majorana hybridization, are enhanced by the reduced lever arm at strong coupling.     Dissecting the origin of the submillimeter emission in nearby galaxies with Herschel and LABOCA

    We model the infrared to submillimeter spectral energy distribution of 11 nearby galaxies of the KINGFISH sample using Spitzer and Herschel data and compare model extrapolations at 870um (using different fitting techniques) with LABOCA 870um observations. We investigate how the differences between predictions and observations vary with model assumptions or environment. At global scales, we find that modified blackbody models using realistic cold emissivity indices (beta_c=2 or 1.5) are able to reproduce the 870um observed emission within the uncertainties for most of the sample. Low values (beta_c<1.3) would be required in NGC0337, NGC1512 and NGC7793. At local scales, we observe a systematic 870um excess when using beta_=2.0. The beta_c=1.5 or the Draine and Li (2007) models can reconcile predictions with observations in part of the disks. Some of the remaining excesses occur towards the centres and can be partly or fully accounted for by non-dust contributions such as CO(3-2) or, to a lesser extent, free-free or synchrotron emission. In three non-barred galaxies, the remaining excesses rather occur in the disk outskirts. This could be a sign of a flattening of the submm slope (and decrease of the effective emissivity index) with radius in these objects.Comment: 31 pages (including appendix), 7 figures, accepted for publication in MNRA

    A review on experimental results for direct photon production in heavy ion reactions is given. A brief survey of early direct photon limits from SPS experiments is presented. The first measurement of direct photons in heavy ion reactions from the WA98 collaboration is discussed and compared to theoretical calculations.     Threshold effects in excited charmed baryon decays

    Motivated by recent results on charmed baryons from CLEO and FOCUS, we reexamine the couplings of the orbitally excited charmed baryons. Due to its proximity to the [Sigma_c pi] threshold, the strong decays of the Lambda_c(2593) are sensitive to finite width effects. This distorts the shape of the invariant mass spectrum in Lambda_{c1}-> Lambda_c pi^+pi^- from a simple Breit-Wigner resonance, which has implications for the experimental extraction of the Lambda_c(2593) mass and couplings. We perform a fit to unpublished CLEO data which gives M(Lambda_c(2593)) - M(Lambda_c) = 305.6 +- 0.3 MeV and h2^2 = 0.24^{+0.23}_{-0.11}, with h2 the Lambda_{c1}-> Sigma_c pi strong coupling in the chiral Lagrangian.
