Anomalous enrichment of molybdenum and associated metals in Lower Jurassic (Lias Group) black shales of central England, as revealed by systematic geochemical surveys
Systematic multi-media geochemical surveying by the British Geological Survey's Geochemical Baseline Survey of the Environment (G-BASE) project has revealed significant anomalous patterns of enrichment for a suite of elements â copper (Cu) and uranium (U) â with exceptionally high levels of molybdenum (Mo), in soils and stream sediments in central England. Enrichment of these elements is most often associated with organic-rich, sulphidic âblack shaleâ lithofacies, typical of oxygen-deficient, euxinic depositional environments. The main anomaly lies between Evesham and Rugby where the bedrock comprises the Blue Lias and Charmouth Mudstone formations. Concentrations of Mo are particularly high, reaching soil values of 50 mg/kg, where the regional background is <2 mg/kg. Analysis of black shale partings sampled from rhythmic limestoneâshale couplets reveal Mo levels up to 320 mg/kg. Complementary X-ray diffraction analyses suggest that the anomalous Mo levels are hosted by sulphidic (pyrite) rather than organic phases. High Mo levels may have significant impacts on local agriculture, as well as revealing hitherto unsuspected periods of hypoxic and anoxic bottom water sedimentation within localised basins in central England during the Early Jurassic. Rhythmic alternations of thin beds of Mo-rich, sulphidic black shale (euxinic) with bioclastic and micritic limestone (oxic) represent primary depositional cycles rather than a diagenetic origin. The bed-scale cyclicity is attributed to previously described orbitally-induced precession cycles that influenced climate. These resulted in periods of basin anoxia and black shale sedimentation during periods of enhanced terrestrial fresh-water run-off (possibly below a low-salinity pycnocline), alternating with periods of oxygenation of the sea-water and bottom sediments during overturn of the water column

Graduate Quantum Mechanics Reform
We address four main areas in which graduate quantum mechanics education can
be improved: course content, textbook, teaching methods, and assessment tools.
We report on a three year longitudinal study at the Colorado School of Mines
using innovations in all these areas. In particular, we have modified the
content of the course to reflect progress in the field in the last 50 years,
used textbooks that include such content, incorporated a variety of teaching
techniques based on physics education research, and used a variety of
assessment tools to study the effectiveness of these reforms. We present a new
assessment tool, the Graduate Quantum Mechanics Conceptual Survey, and further
testing of a previously developed assessment tool, the Quantum Mechanics
Conceptual Survey. We find that graduate students respond well to
research-based techniques that have been tested mainly in introductory courses,
and that they learn much of the new content introduced in each version of the
course. We also find that students' ability to answer conceptual questions
about graduate quantum mechanics is highly correlated with their ability to
solve calculational problems on the same topics. In contrast, we find that
students' understanding of basic undergraduate quantum mechanics concepts at
the modern physics level is not improved by instruction at the graduate level.Comment: accepted to American Journal of Physic

Ecosystem service values support conservation and sustainable land development: Perspectives from four University of California campuses
Urban landscapes homogenize our world at global scales, contributing to âextinction of experienceâ, a progressive decline in human interactions with native greenspace that can disconnect people from the services it provides. College age adults report feeling disconnected from nature more than other demographics, making universities a logical place to explore interventions intended to restore a connection with nature. This study surveyed 1088 students and staff across four university campus communities in Southern California, USA and used multicriteria decision analysis to explore their landscape preferences and the implications of those preferences for combatting extinction of experience. Our results suggest that perspectives of, and preferences for, different greenspace forms vary significantly (i.e., they are not perceived as substitutable). Support for native ecosystems, particularly coastal sage scrub (top ranked landscape) was generally high, suggesting that disaffection with wild nature is not particularly widespread. Programs for replacing turf grass lawns (lowest ranked landscape) with native plants were also well supported, but support for stormwater bioswales was more moderate (and variable). This may reflect their relative newness, both on university campuses and in urban spaces more generally. Not all members of campus communities preferred the same landscapes; preferences differed with degree of pro-environmentalism and university status (undergraduate student, graduate student, staff). Even so, all respondents exhibited landscape preferences consistent with at least one approach for combatting extinction of experience, suggesting that ecologists, engineers and urban planners have a viable set of generalizable tools for reconnecting people with nature
First Observation of the Rare Decay Mode K-long -> e+ e-
In an experiment designed to search for and study very rare two-body decay
modes of the K-long, we have observed four examples of the decay K-long -> e+
e-, where the expected background is 0.17+-0.10 events. This observation
translates into a branching fraction of 8.7^{+5.7}_{-4.1} X 10^{-12},
consistent with recent theoretical predictions. This result represents by far
the smallest branching fraction yet measured in particle physics.Comment: 9 pages, 3 figure
Thrombin generation in human coronary arteries after percutaneous transluminal balloon angioplasty
AbstractObjectives. The aim of this study was to investigate the relation between coronary atherosclerotic plaque injury and activation of the coagulation cascade.Background. Thrombus formation after atherosclerotic plaque disruption has been implicated in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, unstable angina and myocardial infarction.Methods. Biochemical markers of thrombin generation (prothrombin fragment F1+2) and thrombin activity (fibrinopeptide A) were measured in coronary blood before, during and immediately after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. After demonstrating that blood withdrawal through an angioplasty catheter does not artifactually elevate the plasma levels of these markers in patients after heparinization, coronary artery samples ware collected proximal and distal to the lesion before and distal to the lesion after baltoon inflation in 26 patients.Results. Plasma levels of F1+2measured proximal to the lesion before angioplasty (median 0.47 nmol/liter, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.40 to 0.50) were significantly elevated after angioplasty (median 0.55 nmol/liter, 95% CI 0.46 to 0.72, p = 0.001). In contrast, plasma fibrinopeptide A levels measured proximal to the lesion before angioplasty (median 2.0 ng/ml, 95% CI 1.3 to 22) were similar to those measured after angioplasty (median 1.8 ng/ml, 95% CI 1.3 to 3.0, p = NS). After we defined a normal range of interassay variability on the basis of values obtained from samples drawn proximal and distal to the lesion before angioplasty, seven patients (27%) had a significant increase in F1+2plasma levels. A significant increase in plasma fibrinopeptide A occurred in five of these seven patients. Lesions with dissection, filling defects or haziness on postangioplasty angiography were associated with more thrombin generation than lesions without these features.Conclusions. Markers of thrombio generation and activity can be collected safely and assayed accurately in heparinized blood withdrawn through aa angioplasty catheter. Balloon dilation of coronary stenoses increases thrombin generation and activity within the coronary artery in a substantial subgroup of patients undergoing angioplasty
