These technologies are used by environmental engineers and scientists to monitor a multiplicity of environments and services, and, specific to this paper, energy and water supplied to the built environment. Although the technology is developed by Computer Science specialists, the use and deployment is traditionally performed by environmental engineers. This paper examines deployment from the perspectives of environmental engineers and scientists and asks what computer scientists can do to improve the process. The paper uses a case study to demonstrate the agile operation of WSNs within the Cloud Computing infrastructure, and thus the demand-driven, collaboration-intense paradigm of Digital Ecosystems in Complex Environments

    Extending sensor networks into the cloud using Amazon web services

    Sensor networks provide a method of collecting environmental data for use in a variety of distributed applications. However, to date, limited support has been provided for the development of integrated environmental monitoring and modeling applications. Specifically, environmental dynamism makes it difficult to provide computational resources that are sufficient to deal with changing environmental conditions. This paper argues that the Cloud Computing model is a good fit with the dynamic computational requirements of environmental monitoring and modeling. We demonstrate that Amazon EC2 can meet the dynamic computational needs of environmental applications. We also demonstrate that EC2 can be integrated with existing sensor network technologies to offer an end-to-end environmental monitoring and modeling solution

    Reliable data delivery in low energy ad hoc sensor networks

    Reliable delivery of data is a classical design goal for reliability-oriented collection routing protocols for ad hoc wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Guaranteed packet delivery performance can be ensured by careful selection of error free links, quick recovery from packet losses, and avoidance of overloaded relay sensor nodes. Due to limited resources of individual senor nodes, there is usually a trade-off between energy spending for packets transmissions and the appropriate level of reliability. Since link failures and packet losses are unavoidable, sensor networks may tolerate a certain level of reliability without significantly affecting packets delivery performance and data aggregation accuracy in favor of efficient energy consumption. However a certain degree of reliability is needed, especially when hop count increases between source sensor nodes and the base station as a single lost packet may result in loss of a large amount of aggregated data along longer hops. An effective solution is to jointly make a trade-off between energy, reliability, cost, and agility while improving packet delivery, maintaining low packet error ratio, minimizing unnecessary packets transmissions, and adaptively reducing control traffic in favor of high success reception ratios of representative data packets. Based on this approach, the proposed routing protocol can achieve moderate energy consumption and high packet delivery ratio even with high link failure rates. The proposed routing protocol was experimentally investigated on a testbed of Crossbow's TelosB motes and proven to be more robust and energy efficient than the current implementation of TinyOS2.x MultihopLQI

    We consider a recent extension to the validity of the quasi-steady-state assumption (QSSA) which includes the case where the ratio of the initial enzyme to substrate concentration is not necessarily small. We extend the analysis to include diffusion of substrate, in which case the initial enzyme to substrate ratio is spatially dependent and no longer constant. We show that the region in which the QSSA holds depends on the nature of the enzyme-substrate reaction: if the enzyme is inactivated by the substrate then the QSSA holds in a growing disc; if the enzyme is unchanged after reaction then the QSSA holds in a ring travelling through space

    The suicide substrate reaction is a model for certain enzyme-inhibiting drugs. This reaction system is examined assuming that the substrate diffuses freely while the enzyme remains fixed. Two sets of initial and boundary conditions are examined: one modelling an instantaneous point source, akin to an injection of substrate, the other, a continuous point source, akin to a continuing influx, or intravenous drip, of substrate. The quasi-steady-state assumption is applied to obtain analytical solutions for a limited parameter space. Finally, further applications of numerical and analytical experimentation on pharmaceutical mechanisms are described

    Sequential pattern formation in a model for skin morphogenesis

    During morphogenesis regular patterns often develop behind a frontier of pattern formation which travels across the prospective tissue. Here the authors consider the propagating patterns exhibited in a two-dimensional domain by a tissue interaction mechanochemical model for skin pattern formation. It is shown that the model can exhibit travelling waves of complex spatial pattern formation. Two alternative mechanisms that can produce such sequential patterning are presented. In particular, it is demonstrated that the specification of a simple quasi-one-dimensional pattern is all that is required to determine a complex two-dimensional pattern. Finally, the model solutions are related to actual pattern propagation during chick feather primordia initiation
