A note on the (1, 1,..., 1) monopole metric
Recently K. Lee, E.J. Weinberg and P. Yi in CU-TP-739, hep-th/9602167,
calculated the asymptotic metric on the moduli space of (1, 1, ..., 1) BPS
monopoles and conjectured that it was globally exact. I lend support to this
conjecture by showing that the metric on the corresponding space of Nahm data
is the same as the metric they calculate.Comment: 12 pages, latex, no figures, uses amsmath, amsthm, amsfont

Introduction to The Special Issue: Advances in Methods and Measurement in Family Psychology
This special issue presents a collection of reports that highlight recent advances in methods and measurement and also shed light on the complexity of family psychology. The importance of theory in guiding solid family science is evident throughout these reports. The reports include guides for researchers who incorporate direct observation into their research protocols and the ever-expanding field of tele-health interventions. Advanced analytic approaches are offered in the areas of grid sequence analysis, latent fixed-effects models, and the Factors of Curves Model (FOCUS). These sophisticated analytic approaches may be applied to advance systemic thinking in family psychology. The last set of articles illustrate how complex and innovative methodologies are applied to address important societal issues. Work experiences and marital relationships in African American couples address the importance of spillover effects in contemporary families. The creation of biobehavioral plasticity index has the potential to inform gene x environment contributions to family functioning. Finally, the unique methodological issues that are particularly germane to the diverse nature of stepfamilies and nonresident fathers are addressed. We hope that readers of this special issue will return to these reports as resources and examples of theory-driven methods and measurements

Future climate stimulates population out-breaks by relaxing constraints on reproduction
When conditions are stressful, reproduction and population growth are reduced, but when favourable, reproduction and population size can boom. Theory suggests climate change is an increasingly stressful environment, predicting extinctions or decreased abundances. However, if favourable conditions align, such as an increase in resources or release from competition and predation, future climate can fuel population growth. Tests of such population growth models and the mechanisms by which they are enabled are rare. We tested whether intergenerational increases in population size might be facilitated by adjustments in reproductive success to favourable environmental conditions in a large-scale mesocosm experiment. Herbivorous amphipod populations responded to future climate by increasing 20 fold, suggesting that future climate might relax environmental constraints on fecundity. We then assessed whether future climate reduces variation in mating success, boosting population fecundity and size. The proportion of gravid females doubled, and variance in phenotypic variation of male secondary sexual characters (i.e. gnathopods) was significantly reduced. While future climate can enhance individual growth and survival, it may also reduce constraints on mechanisms of reproduction such that enhanced intra-generational productivity and reproductive success transfers to subsequent generations. Where both intra and intergenerational production is enhanced, population sizes might boom.Katherine A. Heldt, Sean D. Connell, Kathryn Anderson, Bayden D. Russell, Pablo Mungui
Von Neumann Regular Cellular Automata
For any group and any set , a cellular automaton (CA) is a
transformation of the configuration space defined via a finite memory set
and a local function. Let be the monoid of all CA over .
In this paper, we investigate a generalisation of the inverse of a CA from the
semigroup-theoretic perspective. An element is von
Neumann regular (or simply regular) if there exists
such that and , where is the composition of functions. Such an
element is called a generalised inverse of . The monoid
itself is regular if all its elements are regular. We
establish that is regular if and only if
or , and we characterise all regular elements in
when and are both finite. Furthermore, we study
regular linear CA when is a vector space over a field ; in
particular, we show that every regular linear CA is invertible when is
torsion-free elementary amenable (e.g. when ) and , and that every linear CA is regular when
is finite-dimensional and is locally finite with for all .Comment: 10 pages. Theorem 5 corrected from previous versions, in A.
