Narrow Technihadron Production at the First Muon Collider
In modern technicolor models, there exist very narrow spin-zero and spin-one
neutral technihadrons---, and ---with masses of a
few 100 GeV. The large coupling of to , the direct
coupling of and to the photon and , and the superb
energy resolution of the First Muon Collider may make it possible to resolve

Balance Functions, Correlations, Charge Fluctuations and Interferometry
Connections between charge balance functions, charge fluctuations and
correlations are presented. It is shown that charge fluctuations can be
directly expressed in terms of a balance functions under certain assumptions.
The distortion of charge balance functions due to experimental acceptance is
discussed and the effects of identical boson interference is illustrated with a

A practice-related risk score (PRS): a DOPPS-derived aggregate quality index for haemodialysis facilities
Background. The Dialysis Outcomes and Practice Patterns Study (DOPPS) database was used to develop and validate a practice-related risk score (PRS) based on modifiable practices to help facilities assess potential areas for improving patient care.
Methods. Relative risks (RRs) from a multivariable Cox mortality model, based on observational haemodialysis (HD) patient data from DOPPS I (1996-2001, seven countries), were used. The four practices were the percent of patients with Kt/V >= 1.2, haemoglobin >= 11 g/dl (110 g/l), albumin >= 4.0 g/dl (40g/l) and catheter use, and were significantly related to mortality when modelled together. DOPPS II data (2002-2004, 12 countries) were used to evaluate the relationship between PRS and mortality risk using Cox regression.
Results. For facilities in DOPPS I and II, changes in PRS over time were significantly correlated with changes in the standardized mortality ratio (SMR). The PRS ranged from 1.0 to 2.1. Overall, the adjusted RR of death was 1.05 per 0.1 points higher PRS (P < 0.0001). For facilities in both DOPPS I and II (N = 119), a 0.2 decrease in PRS was associated with a 0.19 decrease in SMR (P = 0.005). On average, facilities that improved PRS practices showed significantly reduced mortality over the same time frame.
Conclusions. The PRS assesses modifiable HD practices that are linked to improved patient survival. Further refinements might lead to improvements in the PRS and will address regional variations in the PRS/mortality relationship
Vacuum Alignment in Technicolor Theories-I. The Technifermion Sector
We have carried out numerical studies of vacuum alignment in technicolor
models of electroweak and flavor symmetry breaking. The goal is to understand
alignment's implications for strong and weak CP nonconservation in quark
interactions. In this first part, we restrict our attention to the
technifermion sector of simple models. We find several interesting phenomena,
including (1) the possibility that all observable phases in the technifermions'
unitary vacuum-alignment matrix are integer multiples of \pi/N' where N' \le N,
the number of technifermion doublets, and (2) the possibility of exceptionally

Lubiprostone Stimulates Duodenal Bicarbonate Secretion in Rats
Lubiprostone, a bicyclic fatty acid, is used for the treatment of chronic constipation. No published study has addressed the effect of lubiprostone on intestinal ion secretion in vivo.
The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that lubiprostone augments duodenal HCO3
− secretion (DBS).
Rat proximal duodenal loops were perfused with pH 7.0 Krebs, control vehicle (medium-chain triglycerides), or lubiprostone (0.1–10 μM). We measured DBS with flow-through pH and CO2 electrodes, perfusate [Cl−] with a Cl− electrode, and water flux using a non-absorbable ferrocyanide marker. Some rats were pretreated with a potent, selective CFTR antagonist, CFTRinh-172 (1 mg/kg, ip), 1 h before experiments.
Perfusion of lubiprostone concentration dependently increased DBS, whereas net Cl− output and net water output were only increased at 0.1 μM, compared with vehicle. CFTRinh-172 reduced lubiprostone (10 μM)-induced DBS increase, whereas net Cl− output was also unchanged. Nevertheless, CFTRinh-172 reduced basal net water output, which was reversed by lubiprostone. Furthermore, lubiprostone-induced DBS was inhibited by EP4 receptor antagonist, not by an EP1/2 receptor antagonist or by indomethacin pretreatment.
In this first study of the effect of lubiprostone on intestinal ion secretion in vivo, lubiprostone stimulated CFTR-dependent DBS without changing net Cl− secretion. This effect supports the hypothesis that Cl− secreted by CFTR is recycled across the apical membrane by anion exchangers. Recovery of water output during CFTR inhibition suggests that lubiprostone may improve the intestinal phenotype in CF patients. Furthermore, increased DBS suggests that lubiprostone may protect the duodenum from acid-induced injury via EP4 receptor activation
On Axially Symmetric Solutions in the Electroweak Theory
We present the general ansatz, the energy density and the Chern-Simons charge
for static axially symmetric configurations in the bosonic sector of the
electroweak theory. Containing the sphaleron, the multisphalerons and the
sphaleron-antisphaleron pair at finite mixing angle, the ansatz further allows
the construction of the sphaleron and multisphaleron barriers and of the
bisphalerons at finite mixing angle. We conjecture that further solutions

Status and overview of development of the Silicon Pixel Detector for the PHENIX experiment at the BNL RHIC
We have developed a silicon pixel detector to enhance the physics
capabilities of the PHENIX experiment. This detector, consisting of two layers
of sensors, will be installed around the beam pipe at the collision point and
covers a pseudo-rapidity of | \eta | < 1.2 and an azimuth angle of | \phi | ~
2{\pi}. The detector uses 200 um thick silicon sensors and readout chips
developed for the ALICE experiment. In order to meet the PHENIX DAQ readout
requirements, it is necessary to read out 4 readout chips in parallel. The
physics goals of PHENIX require that radiation thickness of the detector be
minimized. To meet these criteria, the detector has been designed and
developed. In this paper, we report the current status of the development,
especially the development of the low-mass readout bus and the front-end

Characterisation of Medipix3 Silicon Detectors in a Charged-Particle Beam
While designed primarily for X-ray imaging applications, the Medipix3 ASIC
can also be used for charged-particle tracking. In this work, results from a
beam test at the CERN SPS with irradiated and non-irradiated sensors are
presented and shown to be in agreement with simulation, demonstrating the
suitability of the Medipix3 ASIC as a tool for characterising pixel sensors.Comment: 16 pages, 13 figure
Exact Baryon, Strangeness and Charge Conservation in Hadronic Gas Models
Relativistic heavy ion collisions are studied assuming that particles can be
described by a hadron gas in thermal and chemical equilibrium. The exact
conservation of baryon number, strangeness and charge are explicitly taken into
account. For heavy ions the effect arising from the neutron surplus becomes
important and leads to a substantial increase in e.g. the ratio.

Resonant and Non-Resonant Effects in Photon-Technipion Production at Lepton Colliders
Lepton collider experiments can search for light technipions in final states
made striking by the presence of an energetic photon: e+e- \to
\photon\technipion. To date, searches have focused on either production
through anomalous coupling of the technipions to electroweak gauge bosons or on
production through a technivector meson (\technirho, \techniomega) resonance.
This paper creates a combined framework in which both contributions are
included. This will allow stronger and more accurate limits on technipion
production to be set using existing data from LEP or future data from a
higher-energy linear collider. We provide explicit formulas and sample
calculations (analytic and Pythia) in the framework of the Technicolor Straw
