    The CP-violating asymmetry in \eta\to\pi^+ \pi^- e^+e^-

    We study the CP-violating asymmetry {\cal A}_{\rm CP}, which arises, in \eta\to\pi^+\pi^- e^+e^-, from the angular correlation of the e^+ e^- and \pi^+\pi^- planes due to the interference between the magnetic and electric decay amplitudes. With the phenomenologically determined magnetic amplitude and branching ratio as input, the asymmetry, induced by the electric bremsstrahlung amplitude through the CP-violating decay \eta\to\pi^+\pi^-, and by an unconventional tensor type operator, has been estimated respectively. The upper bound of {\cal A}_{\rm CP} from the former is about 10^{-3}, and the asymmetry from the latter might be up to O(10^{-2}). One can therefore expect that this CP asymmetry would be an interesting CP-violating observable for the future precise measurements in the \eta factories.Comment: LaTeX, 6 pages.     Nano strain-amplifier: making ultra-sensitive piezoresistance in nanowires possible without the need of quantum and surface charge effects

    This paper presents an innovative nano strain-amplifier employed to significantly enhance the sensitivity of piezoresistive strain sensors. Inspired from the dogbone structure, the nano strain-amplifier consists of a nano thin frame released from the substrate, where nanowires were formed at the centre of the frame. Analytical and numerical results indicated that a nano strain-amplifier significantly increases the strain induced into a free standing nanowire, resulting in a large change in their electrical conductance. The proposed structure was demonstrated in p-type cubic silicon carbide nanowires fabricated using a top down process. The experimental data showed that the nano strain-amplifier can enhance the sensitivity of SiC strain sensors at least 5.4 times larger than that of the conventional structures. This result indicates the potential of the proposed strain-amplifier for ultra-sensitive mechanical sensing applications.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Temperature dependent photoluminescence in oxygen ion implanted and rapid thermally annealed ZnO/ZnMgO multiple quantum wells

    The authors investigate the effect of oxygen implantation and rapid thermal annealing in ZnO∕ZnMgOmultiple quantum wells using photoluminescence. A blueshift in the photoluminescence is observed in the implanted samples. For a low implantation dose, a significant increase of activation energy and a slight increase of the photoluminescence efficiency are observed. This is attributed to the suppression of the point defect complexes and transformation between defect structures by implantation and subsequent rapid thermal annealing.     Smartphone-Delivered Ecological Momentary Interventions Based on Ecological Momentary Assessments to Promote Health Behaviors: Systematic Review and Adapted Checklist for Reporting Ecological Momentary Assessment and Intervention Studies.

    BACKGROUND: Healthy behaviors are crucial for maintaining a person's health and well-being. The effects of health behavior interventions are mediated by individual and contextual factors that vary over time. Recently emerging smartphone-based ecological momentary interventions (EMIs) can use real-time user reports (ecological momentary assessments [EMAs]) to trigger appropriate support when needed in daily life. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to assess the characteristics of smartphone-delivered EMIs using self-reported EMAs in relation to their effects on health behaviors, user engagement, and user perspectives. METHODS: We searched MEDLINE, Embase, PsycINFO, and CINAHL in June 2019 and updated the search in March 2020. We included experimental studies that incorporated EMIs based on EMAs delivered through smartphone apps to promote health behaviors in any health domain. Studies were independently screened. The PRISMA (Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses) guidelines were followed. We performed a narrative synthesis of intervention effects, user perspectives and engagement, and intervention design and characteristics. Quality appraisal was conducted for all included studies. RESULTS: We included 19 papers describing 17 unique studies and comprising 652 participants. Most studies were quasi-experimental (13/17, 76%), had small sample sizes, and great heterogeneity in intervention designs and measurements. EMIs were most popular in the mental health domain (8/17, 47%), followed by substance abuse (3/17, 18%), diet, weight loss, physical activity (4/17, 24%), and smoking (2/17, 12%). Of the 17 studies, the 4 (24%) included randomized controlled trials reported nonstatistically significant effects on health behaviors, and 4 (24%) quasi-experimental studies reported statistically significant pre-post improvements in self-reported primary outcomes, namely depressive (P<.001) and psychotic symptoms (P=.03), drinking frequency (P<.001), and eating patterns (P=.01). EMA was commonly used to capture subjective experiences as well as behaviors, whereas sensors were rarely used. Generally, users perceived EMIs to be helpful. Common suggestions for improvement included enhancing personalization, multimedia and interactive capabilities (eg, voice recording), and lowering the EMA reporting burden. EMI and EMA components were rarely reported and were not described in a standardized manner across studies, hampering progress in this field. A reporting checklist was developed to facilitate the interpretation and comparison of findings and enhance the transparency and replicability of future studies using EMAs and EMIs. CONCLUSIONS: The use of smartphone-delivered EMIs using self-reported EMAs to promote behavior change is an emerging area of research, with few studies evaluating efficacy. Such interventions could present an opportunity to enhance health but need further assessment in larger participant cohorts and well-designed evaluations following reporting checklists. Future research should explore combining self-reported EMAs of subjective experiences with objective data passively collected via sensors to promote personalization while minimizing user burden, as well as explore different EMA data collection methods (eg, chatbots).     Suppression of interdiffusion in GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well structure capped with dielectric films by deposition of gallium oxide

    In this work, different dielectric caps were deposited on the GaAs/AlGaAs quantum well(QW) structures followed by rapid thermal annealing to generate different degrees of interdiffusion. Deposition of a layer of GaxOy on top of these dielectric caps resulted in significant suppression of interdiffusion. In these samples, it was found that although the deposition of GaxOy and subsequent annealing caused additional injection of Ga into the SiO₂ layer, Ga atoms were still able to outdiffuse from the GaAsQW structure during annealing, to generate excess Ga vacancies. The suppression of interdiffusion with the presence of Ga vacancies was explained by the thermal stress effect which suppressed Ga vacancydiffusion during annealing. It suggests that GaxOy may therefore be used as a mask material in conjunction with other dielectric capping layers in order to control and selectively achieve impurity-free vacancy disordering.J.     Ce projet applique une approche interdisciplinaire afin de tester l'hypothèse générale et communément admise que la disponibilité et la pertinence de l'information sont cruciaux pour le succès des processus d'aménagement du territoire participatifs (ou collaboratifs) qui impliquent plusieurs groupes d'acteurs, y compris fonctionnaires, des professionnels, des représentants des propriétaires fonciers et du grand public. Cette hypothèse est fondée sur le point de vue "instrumental" que lorsque l'information appropriée est disponible au moment opportun dans le processus de planification, alors il favorisera la réussite de ce processus. Une deuxième hypothèse fondée sur les principes de la «gouvernance» attribue une importance primordiale aux motivations de tous les acteurs et institutions représentés dans le processus de planification. Une troisième hypothèse que la négociation d'un ensemble de règles concernant les rôles et les responsabilités des acteurs et des institutions ainsi que la disponibilité de données appropriées, de statistiques et d'informations sont nécessaires pour une planification collaborative réussie. Cette recherche comprend des études de cas dans la région de langue française de la Suisse (Genève et Lausanne) dans le but d'analyser et d'expliquer comment et pourquoi les statistiques et les informations disponibles peuvent ou non être utilisés efficacement dans les processus décisionnels.     Effectiveness and cost of an incentive-based intervention on food safety and income in "dibiteries" in Dakar, Senegal

    BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanisation in Sub-Saharan African cities such as Dakar, Senegal, leads to proliferation of informal braised meat restaurants known as "dibiteries". Dibiteries do not often comply with minimal hygiene and food safety standards. The primary objective of this study was to assess the effectiveness and cost of a good hygiene practice intervention, identify factors that incentivize hygiene improvement and how that impacts on dibiteries' income. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was carried out in Dakar dibiteries. The 120 random samples of braised meat were collected in three phases: (i) one-month pre-intervention, (ii) 2 months post-intervention, (iii) 10 months post-intervention. The trial comprised four groups of 10 dibiteries each: (a) (control) received no intervention, (b) a standardized training module, (c) a hygiene kit, (d) a training module and hygiene kit. Laboratory analysis of samples determined the total aerobic mesophilic flora (TAMF), thermotolerant coliforms (TC) and Staphylococcus aureus (SA). A questionnaire-based survey and focus group discussion were used to identify pre-intervention hygiene practices, and socioeconomic determinants of hygiene management in dibiteries post-intervention, respectively. RESULTS: Samples were found to be contaminated with TAMF, TC and SA. In phase 1, 27 and 13% of the samples contained TC and SA, respectively. In phase 2, no significant improvement of contamination rates was seen. In phase 3, microbiological quality of samples was significantly improved, with only 11.5% showing contamination with any of the bacterial species analysed (p < 0.1). Compared to the control group, only samples from dibiteries in group (b) had significantly reduced bacterial load in phase 3. The cost of intervention and hygiene improvement was estimated at 67 FCFA (0.12)and41FCFA( 0.12) and 41 FCFA ( 0.07) / day respectively and did not significantly impact on dibiterie profitability. Incentives to sustainably implement good hygiene practices were mainly linked to access to secure long-term workspaces. CONCLUSION: This intervention may have worked, but globally the results are mixed and not quite significant. However, continuous training in good hygiene practice and access to secure and sustainable infrastructure for dibiterie restaurants are the incentives necessary to achieve sustainable investments and behavioural change. We recommend further intervention refinement and testing other factors for promoting the adoption of good hygiene practices in the dibiteries in relation to consumers health risk

    Three-dimensional electronic spectroscopy of excitons in asymmetric double quantum wells

    We demonstrate three-dimensional (3D) electronic spectroscopy of excitons in a double quantum well system using a three-dimensional phase retrieval algorithm to obtain the phase information that is lost in the measurement of intensities. By extending the analysis of two-dimensional spectroscopy to three dimensions, contributions from different quantum mechanical pathways can be further separated allowing greater insight into the mechanisms responsible for the observed peaks. By examining different slices of the complete three-dimensional spectrum, not only can the relative amplitudes be determined, but the peak shapes can also be analysed to reveal further details of the interactions with the environment and inhomogeneous broadening. We apply this technique to study the coupling between two coupled quantum wells, 5.7 nm and 8 nm wide, separated by a 4 nm barrier. Coupling between the heavy-hole excitons of each well results in a circular cross-peak indicating no correlation of the inhomogeneous broadening. An additional cross-peak is isolated in the 3D spectrum which is elongated in the diagonal direction indicating correlated inhomogeneous broadening. This is attributed to coupling of the excitons involving the two delocalised light-hole states and the electron state localised on the wide well. The attribution of this peak and the analysis of the peak shapes is supported by numerical simulations of the electron and hole wavefunctions and the three-dimensional spectrum based on a density matrix approach. An additional benefit of extending the phase retrieval algorithm from two to three dimensions is that it becomes substantially more reliable and less susceptible to noise as a result of the more extensive use of a priori information.The authors gratefully acknowledge the Australian Research Council and Australian National Fabrication Facility for financial support
