The optical counterpart of SAX J1808.4-3658, the transient bursting millisecond X-ray pulsar
A set of CCD images have been obtained during the decline of the X-ray
transient SAX J1808.4-3658 during April-June 1998. The optical counterpart has
been confirmed by several pieces of evidence. The optical flux shows a
modulation on several nights which is consistent with the established X-ray
binary orbit period of 2 hours. This optical variability is roughly in
antiphase with the weak X-ray modulation. The source mean magnitude of V=16.7
on April 18 declined rapidly after April 22. From May 2 onwards the magnitude
was more constant at around V=18.45 but by June 27 was below our sensitivity
limit. The optical decline precedes the rapid second phase of the X-ray
decrease by 3 +/- 1 days. The source has been identified on a 1974 UK Schmidt
plate at an estimated magnitude of ~20. The nature of the optical companion is

Dielectric function and plasmons in graphene
The electromagnetic response of graphene, expressed by the dielectric
function, and the spectrum of collective excitations are studied as a function
of wave vector and frequency. Our calculation is based on the full band
structure, calculated within the tight-binding approximation. As a result, we
find plasmons whose dispersion is similar to that obtained in the single-valley
approximation by Dirac fermions. In contrast to the latter, however, we find a
stronger damping of the plasmon modes due to inter-band absorption. Our
calculation also reveals effects due to deviations from the linear Dirac
spectrum as we increase the Fermi energy, indicating an anisotropic behavior
with respect to the wave vector of the external electromagnetic field

Charge assignments in multiple-U(1) gauge theories
We discuss the choice of gauge field basis in multiple-U(1) gauge theories.
We find that there is a preferred basis, specified by the charge orthogonality
condition, in which the U(1) gauge fields do not mix under one-loop

An analytical analysis of the dispersion predictions for effluents from the Saturn 5 and Scout-Algol 3 rocket exhausts
Predictions of the spatial concentration mapping of the potentially toxic constituents of the exhaust effluents from a launch of a Saturn 5 and of a Scout-Algol 3 vehicle utilizing the NASA/MSFC Multilayer Diffusion Program are provided. In the case of the Saturn 5, special attention was given to the concentration fields of carbon monoxide with a correlation of carbon dioxide concentrations. The Scout-Algol 3 provided an example of the centerline concentrations of hydrogen chloride, carbon monoxide, and alumina under typical meteorological conditions. While these results define the specific environmental impact of these two launches under the meteorological conditions existing during launches, they also provide a basis for the empirical monitoring of the constituents of the exhaust effluents of these vehicles
Topological Interactions in Warped Extra Dimensions
Topological interactions will be generated in theories with compact extra
dimensions where fermionic chiral zero modes have different localizations. This
is the case in many warped extra dimension models where the right-handed top
quark is typically localized away from the left-handed one. Using
deconstruction techniques, we study the topological interactions in these
models. These interactions appear as trilinear and quadrilinear gauge boson
couplings in low energy effective theories with three or more sites, as well as
in the continuum limit. We derive the form of these interactions for various
cases, including examples of Abelian, non-Abelian and product gauge groups of
phenomenological interest. The topological interactions provide a window into
the more fundamental aspects of these theories and could result in unique
signatures at the Large Hadron Collider, some of which we explore.Comment: 40 pages, 10 figures, 2 tables; modifications in the KK parity
