Mammography screening in Greece: an exploratory survey of women’s views, experiences and behaviours.
Background: Internationally, breast cancer comprises 29% of all cancer incidences. In Greece, 1,500-1,800women die annually from breast cancer out of the 4,000 who are affected. Only 5% are detected at an early diseasestage through mammography screening.Aim: This paper presents findings from a study exploring the factors that influence Greek women’smammography screening behaviour.Methodology: Data were collected in Athens-Greece, during the period March-July 2008, from individuals whowere members of six women’s associations. One hundred and eighty six questionnaires were completed and 33interviews were conducted from a sub-sample. This paper reports the findings from the questionnaire survey.Results: Participants had a variety of demographic characteristics with 85% of them having attendedmammography screening. Only 61% of them intended to continue in the future. Τhe majority of women agreedwith a number of factors which supported their decision to participate in regular mammography screening, such asdoctors’ encouragement and mammogram efficacy to detect breast cancer at an early stage, while anxiety wasidentified as a possible inhibitor to their participation.Conclusion: Women’s mammography screening behaviour and perceptions of mammography screening appearedto be positive in relation to their participation. However, the reasons as to why a large number of women indicatedthey were unlikely to go for mammography screening again is not known, and needs further investigation

Parrondo-like behavior in continuous-time random walks with memory
The Continuous-Time Random Walk (CTRW) formalism can be adapted to encompass
stochastic processes with memory. In this article we will show how the random
combination of two different unbiased CTRWs can give raise to a process with
clear drift, if one of them is a CTRW with memory. If one identifies the other
one as noise, the effect can be thought as a kind of stochastic resonance. The
ultimate origin of this phenomenon is the same of the Parrondo's paradox in

Cohomology of Line Bundles: A Computational Algorithm
We present an algorithm for computing line bundle valued cohomology classes
over toric varieties. This is the basic starting point for computing massless
modes in both heterotic and Type IIB/F-theory compactifications, where the
manifolds of interest are complete intersections of hypersurfaces in toric

A Study of Feature Extraction Using Divergence Analysis of Texture Features
An empirical study of texture analysis for feature extraction and classification of high spatial resolution remotely sensed imagery (10 meters) is presented in terms of specific land cover types. The principal method examined is the use of spatial gray tone dependence (SGTD). The SGTD method reduces the gray levels within a moving window into a two-dimensional spatial gray tone dependence matrix which can be interpreted as a probability matrix of gray tone pairs. Haralick et al (1973) used a number of information theory measures to extract texture features from these matrices, including angular second moment (inertia), correlation, entropy, homogeneity, and energy. The derivation of the SGTD matrix is a function of: (1) the number of gray tones in an image; (2) the angle along which the frequency of SGTD is calculated; (3) the size of the moving window; and (4) the distance between gray tone pairs. The first three parameters were varied and tested on a 10 meter resolution panchromatic image of Maryville, Tennessee using the five SGTD measures. Small Energy Scale for Mixed-Valent Uranium Materials
We investigate a two-channel Anderson impurity model with a magnetic
and a quadrupolar ground doublet, and a excited triplet. Using
the numerical renormalization group method, we find a crossover to a non-Fermi
liquid state below a temperature varying as the triplet-doublet
splitting to the 7/2 power. To within numerical accuracy, the non-linear
magnetic susceptibility and the contribution to the linear
susceptibility are given by universal one-parameter scaling functions. These
results may explain UBe as mixed valent with a small crossover scale

Optical conductivity of a metal-insulator transition for the Anderson-Hubbard model in 3 dimensions away from 1/2 filling
We have completed a numerical investigation of the Anderson-Hubbard model for
three-dimensional simple cubic lattices using a real-space self-consistent
Hartree-Fock decoupling approximation for the Hubbard interaction. In this
formulation we treat the spatial disorder exactly, and therefore we account for
effects arising from localization physics. We have examined the model for
electronic densities well away 1/2 filling, thereby avoiding the physics of a
Mott insulator. Several recent studies have made clear that the combined
effects of electronic interactions and spatial disorder can give rise to a
suppression of the electronic density of states, and a subsequent
metal-insulator transition can occur. We augment such studies by calculating
the ac conductivity for such systems. Our numerical results show that weak
interactions enhance the density of states at the Fermi level and the
low-frequency conductivity, there are no local magnetic moments, and the ac
conductivity is Drude-like. However, with a large enough disorder strength and
larger interactions the density of states at the Fermi level and the
low-frequency conductivity are both suppressed, the conductivity becomes
non-Drude-like, and these phenomena are accompanied by the presence of local
magnetic moments. The low-frequency conductivity changes from a sigma-sigma_dc
omega^{1/2} behaviour in the metallic phase, to a sigma omega^2 behaviour in
the nonmetallic regime. Our numerical results show that the formation of
magnetic moments is essential to the suppression of the density of states at
the Fermi level, and therefore essential to the metal-insulator transition
