Is green space in the living environment associated with people's feelings of social safety?
Abstract.
The authors investigate whether the percentage of green space in people's living environ-
ment affects their feelings of social safety positively or negatively. More specifically they investigate
the extent to which this relationship varies between urban and rural areas, between groups in the
community that can be identified as more or less vulnerable, and the extent to which different types of
green space exert different influences. The study includes 83736 Dutch citizens who were interviewed
about their feelings of social safety. The percentage of green space in the living environment of each
respondent was calculated, and data analysed by use of a three-level latent variable model, controlled
for individual and environmental background characteristics. The analyses suggest that more green
space in people's living environment is associated with enhanced feelings of social safetyöexcept in
very strongly urban areas, where enclosed green spaces are associated with reduced feelings of social
safety. Contrary to the common image of green space as a dangerous hiding place for criminal activity
which causes feelings of insecurity, the results suggest that green space generally enhances feelings of
social safety. The results also suggest, however, that green space in the most urban areas is a matter
of concern with respect to social safety.
Can burglary prevention be low-carbon and effective? Investigating the environmental performance of burglary prevention measures
There has been limited study to date on the environmental impacts of crime prevention measures. We address this shortfall by estimating the carbon footprint associated with the most widely used burglary prevention measures: door locks, window locks, burglar alarms, lighting and CCTV cameras. We compare these footprints with a measure of their effectiveness, the security protection factor,
allowing us to identify those measures that are both low-carbon and effective in preventing burglary. Window locks are found to be the most effective and low-carbon
measure available individually. Combinations of window locks, door locks, external and indoor lightings are also shown to be effective and low-carbon. Burglar alarms and CCTV do not perform as strongly, with low security against burglary and higher carbon footprints. This information can be used to help inform more sustainable choices of burglary prevention within households as well as for crime prevention product design
Beyond crime statistics: the construction and application of a criminogenity monitor in Amsterdam
Criminologists have devoted a great deal of attention to risk factors - also called criminogenic factors - leading to criminal offending. This paper presents a criminogenity monitor which includes 19 risk factors that underlie crime. These factors do not themselves cause criminal behaviour; rather, they must be seen as signals that crimes may be committed. After discussing how the criminogenity monitor was constructed, we apply the risk factors we examined to the situation in Amsterdam, capital city of the Netherlands. The monitor is intended to function particularly as an instrument to rationalise policy-makers' work in targeting and preventing symptoms of crime at three geographical levels: the entire city, its boroughs and its neighbourhoods. © 2012 The Author(s)
