Clinical implications of the anisotropic analytical algorithm for IMRT treatment planning and verification

PURPOSE: To determine the implications of the use of the Anisotropic Analytical Algorithm(AAA) for the production and dosimetric verification of IMRT plans for treatments of the prostate, parotid, nasopharynx and lung. METHODS: 72 IMRT treatment plans produced using the Pencil Beam Convolution (PBC)algorithm were recalculated using the AAA and the dose distributions compared. 24 of the plans were delivered to inhomogeneous phantoms and verification measurements made using a pinpoint ionisation chamber. The agreement between the AAA and measurement was determined. RESULTS: Small differences were seen in the prostate plans, with the AAA predicting slightly lower minimum PTV doses. In the parotid plans, there were small increases in the lens and contralateral parotid doses while the nasopharyngeal plans revealed a reduction in the volume of the PTV covered by the 95% isodose (the V95%) when the AAA was used. Large changes were seen in the lung plans, the AAA predicting reductions in the minimum PTV dose and large reductions in the V95%. The AAA also predicted small increases in the mean dose to the normal lung and the V20. In the verification measurements, all AAA calculations were within 3% or 3.5mm distance to agreement of the measured doses. Conclusions: The AAA should be used in preference to the PBC algorithm for treatments involving low density tissue but this may necessitate re-evaluation of plan acceptability criteria. Improvements to the Multi-Resolution Dose Calculation algorithm used in the inverse planning are required to reduce the convergence error in the presence of lung tissue. There was excellent agreement between the AAA and verification measurements for all sites

B Physics on the Lattice: Present and Future

Recent experimental measurements and lattice QCD calculations are now reaching the precision (and accuracy) needed to over-constrain the CKM parameters ρˉ\bar\rho and ηˉ\bar\eta. In this brief review, I discuss the current status of lattice QCD calculations needed to connect the experimental measurements of BB meson properties to quark flavor-changing parameters. Special attention is given to BπνB\to\pi\ell\nu, which is becoming a competitive way to determine Vub|V_{ub}|, and to B0B0ˉB^0-\bar{B^0} mixings, which now include reliable extrapolation to the physical light quark mass. The combination of the recent measurement of the BsB_s mass difference and current lattice calculations dramatically reduces the uncertainty in Vtd|V_{td}|. I present an outlook for reducing dominant lattice QCD uncertainties entering CKM fits, and I remark on lattice calculations for other decay channels.Comment: Invited brief review for Mod. Phys. We determine the mass and decay constant of the a1a_1 meson using Monte Carlo simulation of lattice QCD. We find Ma1=1250±80M_{a_1} = 1250 \pm 80 MeV and fa1=0.30±0.03 (GeV)2f_{a_1} = 0.30 \pm 0.03 ~({\rm GeV})^2, in good agreement with experiment.Comment: 9 page uu-encoded compressed postscript file. version appearing in Phys. Active Semantic Electronic Medical Record

    Get PDF
The healthcare industry is rapidly advancing towards the widespread use of electronic medical records systems to manage the increasingly large amount of patient data and reduce medical errors. In addition to patient data there is a large amount of data describing procedures, treatments, diagnoses, drugs, insurance plans, coverage, formularies and the relationships between these data sets. While practices have benefited from the use of EMRs, infusing these essential programs with rich domain knowledge and rules can greatly enhance their performance and ability to support clinical decisions. Active Semantic Electronic Medical Record (ASEMR) application discussed here uses Semantic Web technologies to reduce medical errors, improve physician efficiency with accurate completion of patient charts, improve patient safety and satisfaction in medical practice, and improve billing due to more accurate coding. This results in practice efficiency and growth by enabling physicians to see more patients with improved care. ASEMR has been deployed and in daily use for managing all patient records at the Athens Heart Center since December 2005. This showcases an application of Semantic Web in health care, especially small clinics

The Nt=6N_t=6 equation of state for two flavor QCD

We improve the calculation of the equation of state for two flavor QCD by simulating on Nt=6N_t=6 lattices at appropriate values of the couplings for the deconfinement/chiral symmetry restoration crossover. For amq=0.0125am_q=0.0125 the energy density rises rapidly to approximately 1 GeV/fm3{\rm GeV/fm^3} just after the crossover(mπ/mρ0.4m_\pi/m_\rho\approx 0.4 at this point). Comparing with our previous result for Nt=4N_t=4~\cite{eos}, we find large finite NtN_t corrections as expected from free field theory on finite lattices. We also provide formulae for extracting the speed of sound from the measured quantities.Comment: Contribution to Lattice 95 proceedings (combines talks presented by T. Blum and L. Karkkainen). Critical Behavior at the Chiral Phase Transition

    Get PDF
Quantum chromodynamics with two zero mass flavors is expected to exhibit a phase transition with O(4) critical behavior. Fixing the universality class is important for phenomenology and for facilitating the extrapolation of simulation data to physical quark mass values. At Lattice '96 the Tsukuba and Bielefeld groups reported results from new simulations with dynamical staggered quarks at Nt=4N_t = 4, which suggested a departure from the expected critical behavior. We report observations of similar deviations and discuss efforts in progress to understand this phenomenon.Comment: 3 pp, LaTeX with 6 encapsulated Postscript figures. Lattice '97 proceeding
