C32, A Young Star Cluster in IC 1613
The Local Group irregular galaxy IC 1613 has remained an enigma for many
years because of its apparent lack of star clusters. We report the successful
search for clusters among several of the candidate objects identified many
years ago on photographic plates. We have used a single HST WFPC2 pointing and
a series of images obtained with the WIYN telescope under exceptional seeing
conditions, examining a total of 23 of the previously published candidates. All
but six of these objects were found to be either asterisms or background
galaxies. Five of the six remaining candidates possibly are small, sparse
clusters and the sixth, C32, is an obvious cluster. It is a compact, young
object, with an age of less than 10 million years and a total absolute
magnitude of M_V = -5.78+/-0.16 within a radius of 13 pc.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, to be published in the May 2000 issue of the PAS
Stable and Unstable Circular Strings in Inflationary Universes
It was shown by Garriga and Vilenkin that the circular shape of nucleated
cosmic strings, of zero loop-energy in de Sitter space, is stable in the sense
that the ratio of the mean fluctuation amplitude to the loop radius is
constant. This result can be generalized to all expanding strings (of non-zero
loop-energy) in de Sitter space. In other curved spacetimes the situation,
however, may be different.
In this paper we develop a general formalism treating fluctuations around
circular strings embedded in arbitrary spatially flat FRW spacetimes. As
examples we consider Minkowski space, de Sitter space and power law expanding
universes. In the special case of power law inflation we find that in certain
cases the fluctuations grow much slower that the radius of the underlying
unperturbed circular string. The inflation of the universe thus tends to wash
out the fluctuations and to stabilize these strings.Comment: 15 pages Latex, NORDITA 94/14-
A Semiconductor Nanowire-Based Superconducting Qubit
We introduce a hybrid qubit based on a semiconductor nanowire with an
epitaxially grown superconductor layer. Josephson energy of the transmon-like
device ("gatemon") is controlled by an electrostatic gate that depletes
carriers in a semiconducting weak link region. Strong coupling to an on-chip
microwave cavity and coherent qubit control via gate voltage pulses is
demonstrated, yielding reasonably long relaxation times (0.8 {\mu}s) and
dephasing times (1 {\mu}s), exceeding gate operation times by two orders of
magnitude, in these first-generation devices. Because qubit control relies on
voltages rather than fluxes, dissipation in resistive control lines is reduced,
screening reduces crosstalk, and the absence of flux control allows operation
in a magnetic field, relevant for topological quantum information
Monitoring of the prompt radio emission from the unusual supernova 2004dj in NGC2403
Supernova 2004dj in the nearby spiral galaxy NGC2403 was detected optically
in July 2004. Peaking at a magnitude of 11.2, this is the brightest supernova
detected for several years. Here we present Multi-Element Radio Linked
Interferometer Network (MERLIN) observations of this source, made over a four
month period, which give a position of R.A. = 07h37m17.044s, Dec
=+65deg35'57.84" (J2000.0). We also present a well-sampled 5 GHz light curve
covering the period from 5 August to 2 December 2004. With the exception of the
unusual and very close SN 1987A, these observations represent the first
detailed radio light curve for the prompt emission from a Type II-P supernova.Comment: (1) Jodrell Bank Observatory (2) University of Valencia (3)

Anharmonicity of a Gatemon Qubit with a Few-Mode Josephson Junction
Coherent operation of gate-voltage-controlled hybrid transmon qubits
(gatemons) based on semiconductor nanowires was recently demonstrated. Here we
experimentally investigate the anharmonicity in epitaxial InAs-Al Josephson
junctions, a key parameter for their use as a qubit. Anharmonicity is found to
be reduced by roughly a factor of two compared to conventional metallic
junctions, and dependent on gate voltage. Experimental results are consistent
with a theoretical model, indicating that Josephson coupling is mediated by a
small number of highly transmitting modes in the semiconductor junction
Birth of Closed Strings and Death of Open Strings during Tachyon Condensation
The tremendous progress achieved through the study of black holes and branes
suggests that their time dependent generalizations called Spacelike branes
(S-branes) may prove similarly useful. An example of an established approach to
S-branes is to include a string boundary interaction and we first summarize
evidence for the death of open string degrees of freedom for the homogeneous
rolling tachyon on a decaying brane. Then, we review how to extract the flat
S-brane worldvolumes describing the homogeneous rolling tachyon and how large
deformations correspond to creation of lower dimensional strings and branes.
These S-brane worldvolumes are governed by S-brane actions which are on equal
footing to D-brane actions, since they are derived by imposing conformality on
the string worldsheet, as well as by analyzing fluctuations of time dependent
tachyon configurations. As further examples we generalize previous solutions of
the S-brane actions so as to describe multiple decaying and nucleating closed
fundamental strings. Conceptually S-brane actions are therefore different from
D-brane actions and can provide a description of time dependent strings/branes
and possibly their interactions.Comment: 15 pages, 7 eps figures; invited review for Modern Physics Letters A,

Voltage-Controlled Superconducting Quantum Bus
We demonstrate the ability of an epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor
nanowire to serve as a field-effect switch to tune a superconducting cavity.
Two superconducting gatemon qubits are coupled to the cavity, which acts as a
quantum bus. Using a gate voltage to control the superconducting switch yields
up to a factor of 8 change in qubit-qubit coupling between the on and off
states without detrimental effect on qubit coherence. High-bandwidth operation
of the coupling switch on nanosecond timescales degrades qubit coherence
Formation of the oxygen torus in the inner magnetosphere: Van Allen Probes observations
We study the formation process of an oxygen torus during the 12â15 November 2012 magnetic storm, using the magnetic field and plasma wave data obtained by Van Allen Probes. We estimate the local plasma mass density (ÏL) and the local electron number density (neL) from the resonant frequencies of standing AlfvĂ©n waves and the upper hybrid resonance band. The average ion mass (M) can be calculated by M ⌠ÏL/neL under the assumption of quasi-neutrality of plasma. During the storm recovery phase, both Probe A and Probe B observe the oxygen torus at L = 3.0â4.0 and L = 3.7â4.5, respectively, on the morning side. The oxygen torus has M = 4.5â8 amu and extends around the plasmapause that is identified at LâŒ3.2â3.9. We find that during the initial phase, M is 4â7 amu throughout the plasma trough and remains at âŒ1 amu in the plasmasphere, implying that ionospheric O+ ions are supplied into the inner magnetosphere already in the initial phase of the magnetic storm. Numerical calculation under a decrease of the convection electric field reveals that some of thermal O+ ions distributed throughout the plasma trough are trapped within the expanded plasmasphere, whereas some of them drift around the plasmapause on the dawnside. This creates the oxygen torus spreading near the plasmapause, which is consistent with the Van Allen Probes observations. We conclude that the oxygen torus identified in this study favors the formation scenario of supplying O+ in the inner magnetosphere during the initial phase and subsequent drift during the recovery phase
A New Measurement of Cosmic Ray Composition at the Knee
The Dual Imaging Cerenkov Experiment (DICE) was designed and operated for
making elemental composition measurements of cosmic rays near the knee of the
spectrum at several PeV. Here we present the first results using this
experiment from the measurement of the average location of the depth of shower
maximum, , in the atmosphere as a function of particle energy. The value
of near the instrument threshold of ~0.1 PeV is consistent with
expectations from previous direct measurements. At higher energies there is
little change in composition up to ~5 PeV. Above this energy is deeper
than expected for a constant elemental composition implying the overall
elemental composition is becoming lighter above the knee region. These results
disagree with the idea that cosmic rays should become on average heavier above
the knee. Instead they suggest a transition to a qualitatively different
population of particles above 5 PeV.Comment: 7 pages, LaTeX, two eps figures, aas2pp4.sty and epsf.sty included,
